How to Read Music: Fundamentals of Music Notation Made Easy ReviewIn the first part, the book covers the basic notation in detail, step by step. Author asks you to do a review and make sure you know all the previous material before attempting musical sight reading exercises. The second part of the book covers the more complex notation found in the classical pieces. It is more fast paced because the author assumes that a reader has accumulated the knowledge from the first part. At the end, there are: a directory of musical signs, a directory of all notes on the piano and guitar, and a short musical dictionary. Very handy reference.
Are there better books on the topic? I do not know. I'm not an expert. In my opinion the book does what it advertises. You'll certainly learn how to read the music. Price is really acceptable. Check out the reviews for other books of Roger Evans. Rather impressive. Then judge for yourself.
I'll give it five stars. How to Read Music: Fundamentals of Music Notation Made Easy Overview

The Foundations of Mysticism (Presence of God: a History of Western Christian Mysticism Vol. 1) (v1) ReviewThis book is the first of a multi-volume history of Western Christian mysticism that is sure to be the definitive study in its genre for a long time to come. The book is divided into two parts. The first, entitled "The Historical Roots of Western Mysticism," looks at the primary sources of mysticism in the Jewish, Greek, and Christian traditions. Sacred apocalyptic and ascensional texts, including the chariot vision of Ezekiel (the basis of Merkavah mysticism) are discussed. The significance of the Song of Songs is emphasized. Works from Plato, Philo, Plotinus (his Enneads are a masterpiece of mystical literature), and Proclus are seen as providing significant contributions along with Gnostic and Hermetic sources. When handling the New Testament writings, McGinn is sensitive to his conservative readers and points out that although the apostles Paul and John weren't mystics in the sense that we may speak of Origen and Augustine as mystics, there is certainly a mystical element within Christianity from its beginnings, and Christian scriptures are "certainly susceptible to mystical readings" as he shows. Although early spokesmen for orthodoxy such as Justin, Irenaeus and Clement were all anti-Gnostic, each is seen as contributing to the mystical theology of Church tradition. Origen, called "The Master of Early Christian Thought," is given extended treatment before delving into monastic origins that begin with the father of monks, St. Antony. McGinn explores the thought of Gregory of Nyssa, Macarius the Great, Evagrius Ponticus, and the seminal but controversial Pseudo-Dionysius, whose influence (and apophatic method) has been "more powerful than any other Eastern mystic."
Part II, "The Beginnings of Western Mysticism," concentrates primarily on Augustine although the Early Latin Fathers Ambrose of Milan, Jerome, and John Cassian are discussed. If all this wasn't enough, we are graced with a very valuable appendix that discusses all the major modern contributors to the study of mysticism. The appendix is divided into three sections according to approach: Theological, Philosophical, and Comparativist & Psychological. Names referenced include Schweitzer, Inge, Underhill, Kirk, Butler, Poulain, Merton, James, Von Hugel, Marechal, Maritain, Stace, Otto, Zaehner, Leuba, Jung, Scholem, and Huxley. This book (and series) is absolutely essential reading for those interested in mysticism. The Foundations of Mysticism (Presence of God: a History of Western Christian Mysticism Vol. 1) (v1) Overview

Creating the Multicultural Organization: A Strategy for Capturing the Power of Diversity ReviewThis is one of the volumes which comprise the University of Michigan Business School Management Series. According to Paul H. O'Neill in the Foreword, this book "captures the leading-edge theory and practice on how to leverage diversity for the benefit of individuals and the organizations in which they work." It does indeed. Cox organizes his excellent material within seven chapters:
1. The Challenge of Managing Diversity
2. for Meeting the Challenge
3. leadership: The First Requirement of Change
4. Leverage Research, Develop Measurement Plans
5. Create Effective Education
6. Align Organizational Systems and Practices
7. Follow Up for Sustainable Results A Strategy
As you can see, Cox presents the material within a logical sequence inorder to achieve several specific objectives: to offer a systematic, comprehensive model for change as well as to provide data on the results of using that method; to include detailed examples to illustrate all of his main ideas; to include, also, an integrated case study on managing diversity efforts in one of the world's largest companies Alcoa, Inc.); meanwhile, to integrate relevant research with chapter endnotes; and finally, to raise questions in each chapter for discussion and further learning. He fully achieves all of these objectives.
Cox defines diversity as "the variation of social and cultural identities among people existing together in a defined employment or market setting." Many of the largest organizations have operations located throughout the world. They are by nature "multicultural." Other, probably smaller organizations are now involved in globalization initiatives and have become (or will soon become) "multicultural." Still other organizations, perhaps even smaller, may not be (according to Cox's definition) "multicultural" but they do business with organizations which are; it is in their best interests to have a strategy (or combination of strategies) to capture, manage, and then sustain what Cox calls "the power of diversity." I strongly urge decision-makers in all of these organizations to read Cox's book because all of the subjects, covered so well in logical sequence, can also serve as agenda items during the strategic planning process.
One of the book's greatest value-added benefits consists of various "Tables" and clusters of bullet points which Cox includes within a fast-paced but comprehensive narrative. For example, Table 3.1 (in Chapter 1) which provides seven examples of strong leadership behavior or Table 6.1 (in Chapter 6) which lists "primary climate factors" to be aligned with diversity. Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out the other volumes in the series. With regard to other relevant resources which readers may need for additional study of this important subject, Cox includes a number of excellent recommendations within the "Notes" section.Creating the Multicultural Organization: A Strategy for Capturing the Power of Diversity Overview

Dog Anatomy: A Coloring Atlas ReviewI am a first year veterinary student, and I bought this book thinking it would be a good tool for reviewing my anatomy. Definitely not the case!!! The book is not detailed enough to satisfy the veterinary student (at least not at Tufts!). This is especially true for the nerves and bones. I would recommed getting the Evans and deLahunta "Guide to the Dissection of the Dog" instead, and coloring in their black and white illustrations.Dog Anatomy: A Coloring Atlas Overview

Mathematics: Queen and Servant of Science (Spectrum) ReviewI will keep this very brief. I am an electrical engineer and computer scientist, and, after a couple of decades in the "commercial world" , am always amazed at the "unreal effectiveness" of mathematics when applied to this and the real world. Bell's book captures this essence in a timeless tome that must be required reading and regular re-reading for all aspiring. and indeed, practising, mathematicians, engineers and scientists. It is a source of both inspiration and "bringing back to earth" to those that read it. No serious practitioners library should be without it.Mathematics: Queen and Servant of Science (Spectrum) Overview

Achieve PMP Exam Success PMBOK Guide -- 3rd Edition ReviewPlanning on taking the PMP® or CAPM® exam in the near future? The most important choice you'll need to make is what materials to study to be adequately prepared. The first book you must select for your studying is PMI's A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) - Third Edition. The second book I recommend is Achieve PMP® Exam Success by Margaret Chu, Diane Altwies, and Edward Walker.
For years, the PMI-Orange County (CA) chapter has successfully relied on the combination of the PMBOK® Guide and Achieve PMP® Exam Success as the only two texts used to help our membership prepare to take the PMP exam. We have proven this new edition in the classroom. It continues in the tradition of excellence by integrating the PMBOK Guide and other recognized project management expert sources into its text and, more importantly, into the practice questions provided.
Chu, Altwies, and Walker recognize that adult students learn by doing. Students must practice test taking. The book and accompanying CD-ROM contain over 800 practice exam questions. The materials provide students with an opportunity to take a pre-assessment, a sample exam after each chapter, a post-assessment, and simulated timed four-hour exams. The answers provided for each question reference the appropriate PMBOK Guide section for students to review concepts with which they may be struggling. Take the practice exam questions often throughout your study process.
Besides the many practice questions, the book provides students with an opportunity to complete many hands-on learning experiences through creating project documentation for the Lawrence RV Garage Project. I strongly encourage each student to complete every hands-on exercise. These exercises will prepare you for the story problems found on the exam.
Chu, Altwies, and Walker also realize that an essential part of exam preparation is rote memorization of key project management terms as defined in the PMBOK Guide. The downloadable flashcards are thorough. The downloading process is simple and very user friendly.
Finally, Achieve PMP® Exam Success contains many tips and tricks on how to prepare for the exam. The study tips are clearly based on the years of experience that the authors have in preparing students to take the PMP exam.
I strongly recommend Achieve PMP® Exam Success. It contains all the elements necessary for students to pass the PMP exam - integration with the PMBOK Guide, hands-on learning experiences, clear definition of key terms, and exam taking tips. Best wishes for your PMP exam success!

How to Succeed as a Freelance Translator ReviewIt has long been very difficult to get information about careers in foreign languages: translation, interpreting, etc. Even at the college level, most foreign language departments are focused on purely academic subjects such as literature, grammar, etc., and few instructors can provide guidance to their students about what they can actually DO with their education once they complete it. This book does an excellent job of filling that need. I have been a full-time free-lance professional technical translator for over ten years, and I had a rocky road getting where I am today. I wish I had had a book like this to guide me when I was younger. How to Succeed as a Freelance Translator Overview
