Definitions in Information Management ReviewThe author makes some excellent points about the current state of the data mess and what is needed in order to start providing reliable insight into enterprise data content (and metadata).
Some highlights:
1) Data is 'owned' by the enterprise...not a person or department
2) Managing data doesn't lend itself to traditional project management
3) Data (and definitions) change over time...
4) Therefore, data definition needs to be a living activity (growing and evolving with the business)
5) Valid data definitions require a teaming of Business and Technology to succeed
It is an exceedingly dry topic but his use of historical references, examples and analogies help move the topic along.
I would have liked to see an Appendix of applicable tools in the space (although one of his points is that technology alone cannot solve the problem).
