Understanding Philanthropy: Its Meaning and Mission (Philanthropic and Nonprofit Studies) ReviewThis book is the product of collaboration between two quite distinct academic minds. One an older man whose scholarship tends toward history; the other, younger, who has a background in the social sciences and administration. What I think is important about this collaboration is that their analysis and discussion straddles tradition and contemporary practice in philanthropy to provide a very thorough and thoughtful account of what philanthropy is. Their account places its roots and traditions in the Middle East as a response to the human needs for survival in that most barren of environments and follows its development and practice in a world where philanthropy responds to such natural and unnatural phenomena as Hurricane Katrina and 9/11
The definition of philanthropy they adopt is a very broad one. It encompasses a great deal more than giving. They describe five roles for philanthropy:
1. Service role: Providing services (especially when the other sectors fail to provide them) and meeting needs.
2. Advocacy role: Advocating for reform, for particular interests, for particular populations, or for particular views of the public good.
3. Cultural role: Providing a vehicle for expressing and preserving cherished values, traditions, identities, and other aspects of culture.
4. Civic role: Building community, generating "social capital," and promoting and increasing civic engagement.
5. Vanguard role: Serving as the site for social innovation, experimentation, and entrepreneurial invention.
Philanthropy is described as being the response to the `human problematic' and a product of the `moral imagination'. It is rooted in early history, predating organized religion. And it exists in all cultures and religions. Nonetheless, the authors have an unabashed bias toward the American tradition of philanthropy. Most of the discourse falls within this frame and through this frame reaches toward a conclusion that: "The future of free, open, and democratic societies is directly linked to the vitality of the philanthropic tradition in those societies. It is not possible for a democracy to thrive without a healthy philanthropic sector.
I would like to echo another of its concluding sentiments: "....if philanthropy is interesting and important, it must be studied more and taught more. Its meaning and mission must be better understood."
