Ideology: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) ReviewThis is an extremely useful introduction to the topic of ideology in a congenial format. Don't be misled by the subtitle, "A Very Short Introduction." The Oxford Press very-short-introduction series summarizes scholarship in salient areas without dumbing the material down. I have used these little books in graduate seminars to supplement more specific readings. They make it possible for readers new to an area to get their bearings fairly quickly and make informed choices about future reading.
As to this particular title, Freeden performs a number of valuable services. One is to dispel the idea that the term "ideology" is a pejorative label for unsavory thinking. This approach, all too common among prominent American sociologists in the 1950s and 1960s, inhibits any mature understanding of the role of ideologies in social, economic, and political contexts. All understandings of reality are mediated understandings, influenced by our socioecnomic circumstances and histories. We do not have the choice of seeing our surroundings "as they really are," whatever that may mean. In a confusing world, Freeden points out, ideology allows human beings to assign meaning to otherwise disconnected experiences. It is ubiquitous and unavoidable.
Freeden also offers a very competent review of the important literature and main theoretical approaches to this subject. In addition to the standard references to Mannheim, Gramsci, and Geertz, he discusses the work of hermaneuticists such as Paul Ricoeur, conceptual historians like Reinhart Koselleck, discourse theorists such as Foucault, and post Marxists such as Laclau and Mouffe. If you are interested in the topic, but don't want to waste your time flailing around, trying to separate the intellectual wheat from the chaff, this book would be a good starting point.

The Quest for Cosmic Justice ReviewThis book is good, not great. And the people who would get the most out of this book are those who are most unlikely to read it. If you are already familiar with Sowell, or read Forbes or The Wall Street Journal on a regular basis, then you are already familiar with most of the ideas and concepts in this book. Nonetheless, the book makes for an interesting read. Sowell persuasively points out that many of those seeking "justice" (cosmic or otherwise) frequently don't give a darn about the costs and benefits of their current flavor of justice on society. Sowell provides many examples, and gloomy predictions, about what happens when the liberal elite impose their visions on the rest of us. As an attorney who just graduated from NYU Law School, I couldn't agree more with Sowell's comments regarding how the rule of law is systematically undermined by our nation's elite law schools. Once the rule of law is gone, you decide justice given the judge's present whims, which is awful close to monarchy---which the liberal elite unfortunately fail to recognize. I was taught nothing but contempt for precedent and the rule of law at NYU, I'd even go so far as to say that most of my professors seemed to feel you should just examine each case from the perspective of who you feel is "disadvantaged" and rule for them. After three years of that attempted brainwashing, Sowell's book is like climbing out of a dark cave and realizing light still exists. The Quest for Cosmic Justice Overview

The Theory of Idle Resources: A Study in Definition Review"W.H. Hutt's Theory of Idle Resources was first published in 1939, surely one of the earliest responses to Keynes's General Theory. Hutt goes for the heart of Keynes's prescription for recovery, which was to get idle resources moving, whether that is money, capital, or labor. If something isn't being employed right now, it is being wasted. Hutt responded at length that there is nothing uneconomic or necessarily inefficient about an idle resource. It is the decision of the owner to hold back when faced with a long-term plan, a judgment call concerning risk, a high reservation wage, or a demand for larger cash balances. In addition, there might be legal restrictions that are causing workers to withhold labor and capitalists to curb production. It makes for fascinating reading, and as I went through it, it struck me that both the Keynesian proposition and the response are still very much in play today."The Theory of Idle Resources: A Study in Definition Overview
