Construction Business Management: What Every Construction Contractor, Builder & Subcontractor Needs to Know ReviewUpon graduation from Georgia Tech's building construction program in 1982, I went to work for Nick Ganaway. One of the many reasons I selected his company was his obvious knowledge of business. Even more, I appreciated the motivation he placed in us (and himself) to always become better as contractors and as businessmen. We met frequently to "log in" new discoveries, efficiencies, risks, and methods of profitability that he had wisely accumulated for us. As I "ventured out" into the world and developed my own business with very little experience, I quickly noticed that although I was a "great" project manager that running a construction company was an entirely different issue. For example, do you understand the unique requirements of the construction firm owner? Terms in the project owner's construction agreement that can unfairly shift major risk onto your plate and what to do about them? How to ensure that you get paid for change orders? What to do when hard times suddenly strike (and they will)? After 25 years of experience in operating a commercial construction company, Mr. Ganaway explains chapter-by-chapter these and every other risk area you must manage if you are going to survive in construction. I know these explanations well as they ring in my mind from discussions with Mr. Ganaway concerning my very first projects and through calling for help with running my own construction business. You will feel like you're having these same discussions with him as you read this book. Every contractor, project manager, and construction student should read it. Today I use this very text to teach our students at Georgia Tech's building construction program how to run a business, as well as consulting in the same area. His principles work!
An added bonus to this text is the final chapter, where Mr. Ganaway makes the case for specializing in chain store construction. To "outsiders" who have not reviewed this market segment, I think you will be surprised at the benefits. If you are not already specializing in a niche market, this chapter is sure to start you thinking about it.

Green from the Ground Up: Sustainable, Healthy, and Energy-Efficient Home Construction (Builder's Guide) ReviewThis book does a good job at setting up a working definition of "green building" as a decision making process that occurs at each point in the design of a building, with an emphasis on residential construction. The book has a lot of pictures and pop-up bubble sidebars that make each page seem more like a design school presentation poster (that's a good thing). It presents a lot of basic information and principles about each part of a building, from foundations, insulation, windows, framing, flashing, natural building, etc. and how they come together as a "green building system."
If you are an architect or drafter who is looking for a book with technical details and explanations about specific construction methods or materials notes do not buy this book. If you would like to learn about green building science principles as to how they relate with each division in a building then buy this book.Green from the Ground Up: Sustainable, Healthy, and Energy-Efficient Home Construction (Builder's Guide) Overview

Plumbing: Tips, Data, and Rules of Thumb ReviewThe author, whom has written a number of other titles on this same subject, has a wealth of knowledge about all facets of Plumbing. What is also notable as well as commendable is when reading his books, you get the feeling that he really likes this field. If Plumbing is your business, then it would be to your advantage to have this as well as some of Woodson's other titles in your collection. This book doesn't pretend to be any more than a vast, comprehensive reference tool--and in my opinion, succeeds. This is the book that you have in your truck if you are a plumber or on the shelf beside your desk if you are a designer. My only criticism (a minor one) is the lack of explanation of pumps and their sizing. Some charts and diagrams are offered but no explanation is given as a follow through. Overall though, I recommend the text as great reference resource every plumber should have.Plumbing: Tips, Data, and Rules of Thumb Overview

Audio/Video Cable Installer's Pocket Guide (Pocket Reference) ReviewIt is easy to see why Steve Lampen is such an esteemed author and lecturer and one of the most respected cable engineers in the industry. Steve Lampen does an excellent job of describing cables and their applications. Starting with the basics of the construction of the wire, Steve describes everything from the conductor's base metal to the insulation and shielding to the applications most appropriate for each cable. He defines all of the important wire specifications and gives you a much better sense of which type of cables are most appropriate for you application. While the book is very technical in scope, Steve makes the complex topics interesting and readable. It is filled with helpful charts, graphs and tables - color codes, NEC fire codes, resistance tables, dielectric constants and more.
So much information is packed into this book that I consider it the best 400 pages of knowledge you can carry in your pocket! This is a must-have book for anyone interested in ANY aspect of cable installation or home-theater hookup.Audio/Video Cable Installer's Pocket Guide (Pocket Reference) Overview
