Ditch Medicine: Advanced Field Procedures For Emergencies ReviewIf one normally carries adrenaline doses, I.V. needles, bags, tubes, and other medical paraphinalia including a wide rage of antibotics into the field with one's self, then this is the book for him or her.
Frankly I was disappointed with the content of this book. I was looking for a book that would educate me on the do's and don't's of treating a wounded person in the wild, away from any hospital or civilization, and with just the bear neccessitites. Instead, what I got was a book that assumes it's readers carry drugs and anti-biotics around with them. Stedman's Medical Dictionary ReviewGood dictionary. However, there are better ones (particularly Tabers). I have less physically attractive medical dictionaries with no color and a boring cover that seem to have the definitions I am looking for when Stedman's doesn't. Mosby's Dictionary of Medicine, Nursing & Health Professions (Mosby's Dictionary of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Professions) ReviewI got Mosby's first as it is larger font and easier reading--it is my first "go to" dictionary as it usually has the words, ESPECIALLY when it's 2 words vs. 1. HOWEVER, it doesn't have everything, then I need to turn to Dorlands (or if I need a more full explanation). What I don't like about Dorlands is you look up a word, and it refers you to another word, and/or it doesn't have 2 word phrases like Mosby's. Between the 2 of them however, I've been able to find everything I need, but don't think there is any one dictionary that would do it. I do like the Tabors, but didn't like the small form factor..too thick and hard to keep pages open. If you travel a lot and need to take something with you that would be great, but for home use, a larger book that stays open is better for me. The Science of Addiction: From Neurobiology to Treatment ReviewFirst, let me say that I am a doctor specializing in alcohol and drug studies and the author of over a hundred publications so I have a good perspective of science books, etc. In a sentence, Carl Erickson's book, The Science of Addiction is one of the best books ever published on the subject. Anyone in the field of addiction medicine (e.g., physicians, psychologists, drug/alcohol counselors) or with a personal or other professional interest in addiction will learn from this book. While a bit more advanced than Drugs The Brain and Behavior: The Pharmacology of Abuse and Dependence, by the same author, it is still very readable, fully referenced and current.
