The Bhagats of the Guru Granth Sahib: Sikh Self-Definition and the Bhagat Bani ReviewFrom what I've heard through the grapevine about this yet unreleased book, this book is likely to establish Pashaura as one of the few scholars in the area of Sikh studies willing to go out on a limb and push the envelope in successive works. For that I commend him, especially given the recent hostility with which the Sikh community has greeted scholars - including him - for challenging tradition.
Pashaura's PhD thesis, supervised by W.H. McLeod at the University of Toronto, had been a source of tremendous controversy within the Sikh community. A revised version of the thesis was published in book form as "The Guru Granth Sahib: Canon, Meaning, and Authority."
However, the theory Pashaura puts forth in his latest book is somewhat less likely to anger the Sikhs because the tradition it questions is, in my opinion, not one that Sikhs hold terribly dear.
Pashaura apparently argues here that the Bhagat Bani (i.e. the hymns contributed by spiritualists other than the Sikh Gurus themselves) was included into the Adi Granth (also known as the Guru Granth Sahib) not because it agrees with the core Sikh teachings - as has been supposed by most Sikh scholars to date - but in order to provide a contrast with the core Sikh teachings.
In other words, Bhagat Bani was included into the Adi Granth merely so that it could be rebutted by the Gurus' own hymns.
This is a daring thesis and, not having read the book, I am unsure of the evidence the author relies upon in order to forward this searing argument. The validity of this work will rest largely on the soundness of the evidence.
I eagerly look forward to reading this book as soon as it's available so that I can determine for myself the extent of the author's genuine justification for turning a commonly held belief on its head. The Bhagats of the Guru Granth Sahib: Sikh Self-Definition and the Bhagat Bani Overview
