Effective Opportunity Management for Projects (Center for Business Practices, 6) (PM Solutions Research) ReviewEven today as of November 2011 in my 3rd edition of this review, I believe this book to be the very best available in risk management with everything you need for you project risk knowledge.
If you have listened to Dr Hillson in one of his lectures or presentations in a PMI Congress, you will be able to appreciate what to wait from the book. In my opinion, It is the best Project Risk Management book, which is one of my preferred knowledge areas, mostly due to the lack of attention by most of the project management community.
The book is well structured and complies very well with the current 4th edition of the PMBoK and the "Practice Standard for Project Risk Management" (in which design core Dr Hillson participated), going deep into the six risk processes. The risk identification chapter is packed with problem solving techniques, explained with accurate detail. I also enjoyed the qualitative assessment process chapter. The quantitative risk analysis chapter is devoted to the Monte Carlo simulation basics , but misses Decision Tree analysis. Dr. Hillson does well describing how to feed data into a simulation, given the results of the qualitative risk assessment, and interpreting the outputs of the simulation. However, John Shuyler "Risk and Decision Analysis in Projects" is more suited for quantitative risk analysis.
His exposition is perfectly clear, sometimes going into the subject over and over, so it is a great learning book suitable as a text book for Project Management masters or any postgraduate courses. Excellent as well for PMP and PMI-RMP candidates.
Don't be fouled by the title. The author goes into negative risks as well as opportunities. The title was good for 2004, when Dr Hillson was in a "crusade" to persuade project managers to pro-actively pursuit opportunities as well as negative risk. Today this is history and all of us know that we have to lunch with positive risk as much as threats. Since 2004, David Hillson has published many other excellent books on project risk and contributed with innumerable public papers and monthly briefings and he has contributed with the development of the ATOM project risk management system.

This Is All: The Pillow Book of Cordelia Kenn. Aidan Chambers (Dance Sequence 6) ReviewOk there seem to be readers that presume that this is a "childs book" or even a teens book; this is clearly not the case. On the book jacket it clearly states not suitable for young readers. With that said I would say that this is an accurate portrayal of most teens. It does have that Judy Blume type of narration but it delves much deeper than any Judy Blume book that I have ever read. This was a quick read for me and for a book that is 802 pages that is a feat. This book draws you into Cordelia's world and what she has experienced and what she hopes to experience. She writes this "pillow book" in hopes that when her daughter is 16 y/o she will get an accurate potryal of Cordelia's life. I didn't expect to like this book but I did immensely. I highly recommend it.

In English with ... of Abbreviations, Acronyms, Synonyms) ReviewYou would think that at $200 this is some kind of spectacular abbreviations dictionary. Not so! While it is quite good and was clearly compiled carefully - more so than many of the other similar dictionaries - I cannot understand what the publisher was thinking to price it at at least $150 more than any other similar reference. It has an enormous number of entries and is pretty accurate in terms of the correct formatting of abbreviations and symbols. One thing I found peculiar is that repeatedly, the author forgets that it is an abbreviatins dictionary and suddenly includes long lists of the meanings of words, like a regular word dictionary. For example, for the word "phobia" -- nothing to do with the abbreviation for phobia -- there are 3 single-spaced, double-columned pages of different kinds of phobias and what they mean. Also, for abbreviations that have multiple definitions, the author uses such strange and complicated punctuation that it is hard to understand where one definition ends and the next begins. Andy writes like a person carrying on a conversation with you. He constructs scenarios that leave you with a handful of questions, and then he answer them one at a time with practical advice and scriptural support.
This is a book about integrity and character. Andy provides real solutions that you can start implementing in your life immediately to start combating each character issue. You will see yourself, and the people around you, very differently after reading this book. You won't regret this change.
I bought this book for each of the 11th grade guys in my small group. If you are a father, I recommend buying 2 copies and reading it along with your teenage son or daughter. Maybe schedule coffee every other week, and discuss one chapter per sitting.

Introduction to Information Systems Project Management with CD-Rom Mandatory Package ReviewOlson's text lays down the fundamental bricks of a solid IT project manager. This book covers a wide variety of topics -- everything from financial analysis (cost/benefit, NPV, etc.) to the approaches of the systems development life cycle.
Although I'm sure Olson has received many deserved acclaims for his writings in this field, I think this text leaves a little to be desired. It is a very impersonal read, oftentimes forgetting that superb personnel skills are essential to the up-and-coming project manager. It is a very thick, dense text, and although it is not even 300 pages, you sometimes feel that you're sifting through a phonebook to find the scarce relevant information. At times, it can even be quite repetitive, which is a true feat for such a thin book.
I got the impression that Olson had very little experience in the area of IT project management, often referring to outside (3rd party) studies and hypothetical examples to back up his main ideas. The text could have used a good deal more real-world examples and insight from professionals in this line of work -- not just other professors who study it.
Overall, it isn't a great book, but you can do worse I suppose. If I weren't required to read this for a class, I would have definitely picked up a different IT project management book by an author in the actual industry. This is a good starting point for a book in this field, but I will definitely want to supplement it with a more encompassing book by an accredited author from the IT workplace.Introduction to Information Systems Project Management with CD-Rom Mandatory Package Overview

It is because man has an eternity within him, is born into this world, not for the sake of living here, not for anything this world can give him, but only to have time and place, to become either an eternal partaker of a divine life with God, or to have an hellish eternity among fallen angels: and therefore, every man who has not his eye, his heart, and his hands, continually governed by this twofold eternity, may justly be said to be fast asleep, to have no awakened sensibility of himself. And a life devoted to the interests and enjoyments of this world, spent and wasted in the slavery of earthly desires, may be truly called a dream; as having all the shortness, vanity, and delusion of a dream; only with this great difference, that when a dream is over, nothing is lost but fictions and fancies; but when the dream of life is ended only by death, all that eternity is lost for which we were brought into being. Now there is no misery in this world, nothing that makes either the life or death of man to be full of calamity, but this blindness and insensibility of his state, into which he so willingly, nay obstinately plunges himself. Everything that has the nature of evil and distress in it takes its rise from hence. Do but suppose a man to know himself, that he comes into this world on no other errand, but to rise out of the vanity of time into the riches of eternity; do but suppose him to govern his inward thoughts and outward actions by this view of himself, and then to him every day has lost all its evil; prosperity and adversity have no difference, because he receives and uses them both in the same spirit; life and death are equally welcome, because equally parts of his way to eternity. For poor and miserable as this life is, we have all of us free access to all that is great, and good, and happy, and carry within ourselves a key to all the treasures that heaven has to bestow upon us. We starve in the midst of plenty, groan under infirmities, with the remedy in our own hand; live and die without knowing and feeling anything of the one, only good, whilst we have it in our power to know and enjoy it in as great a reality, as we know and feel the power of this world over us: for heaven is as near to our souls, as this world is to our bodies; and we are created, we are redeemed, to have our conversation in it. God, the only good of all intelligent natures, is not an absent or distant God, but is more present in and to our souls, than our own bodies; and we are strangers to heaven, and without God in the world, for this only reason, because we are void of that spirit of prayer, which alone can, and never fails to unite us with the one, only good, and to open heaven and the kingdom of God within us. A root set in the finest soil, in the best climate, and blessed with all that sun, and air, and rain can do for it, is not in so sure a way of its growth to perfection, as every man may be, whose spirit aspires after all that, which God is ready and infinitely desirous to give him. For the sun meets not the springing bud that stretches towards him with half that certainty, as God, the source of all good, communicates himself to the soul that longs to partake of him.

Reparando TV Plasma y LCD/ Repairing Plasma TV and LCD: Fundamentos, Ajustes y Soluciones (Spanish Edition) ReviewThis one really confounded ole Lonnie here. First of all, the thing is in Spanish. Spanish! The most non-english studying I've ever done is trying to figure out the assembly instructions on that Pinata I bought my twin girls for their 3rd birthday party. (they were both 5 at the time, we skipped a couple to save up and make it extra special for 'em) That little cardboard donkey gave me a fit, let me tell you. By the time I got the candy and cigarettes inside it, it was almost dark and the girls were plumb give out. They didn't give a turkey if they got to play with it or not . . . Me and Crystal had a good time with it after we put the girls to bed, though. (only took one broomstick whack to the nutts)
Back to the book. I just don't get it. LCD? Plasma? I only messed around with LCD one time, over at the weldin' college. Wayne brought in a bunch of funny lookin' jiblets of paper with what looked like a rainbow-colored unicorn on 'em and passed 'em out to the boys. Let me tell you, next thing I knowed, I had the air compressor nozzle down the front of my coveralls and was seeing all kinds of shameful stuff. I looked over at Wayne and he had what looked like the head of a young Waylon Jennings and the body of a real young Donna Summer! I woke up the next morning in Wayne's bed with She Works Hard for the Money blasting on his stereo! It didn't help things much when I crawled home after being out all night and Wanda noticed two of Wayne's partials embedded in my back. (I need to get those back to him, I really do)
As far as Plasma goes, I don't know why anyone would want a book on that. Really, who wants to sit around and look at pictures of afterbirth.
