Written by a man of vast knowledge and understanding of the subject it is, at once, solidly grounded in scholarship, as well as eminently readable. The author's judgments are sound, and he does not hesitate to set forth incisive, insightful opinions or sagacious conclusions. It is also a work which is long overdue. The whole project, which promises future volumes and compact disks, is eagerly anticipated. Many thanks to Syracuse University for sponsoring the project.
