The Filmmaker's Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide For The Digital Age (includes New High Definition Formats) 2008 First Printing 3rd Edition ReviewI have used this book for my production 1 and 2 course at Southern Illinois University. My impressions: very good summary of factual data. For example I didn't know what Avid DNxHD or Cineform Intermediate meant until I read chapter 5. I probably will not encounter them, but good information to know.
There are also a lot of good reminders in the book. Like on p. 332 "if you shoot in widescreen format, you need to consider what will happen if your movie is shown in a non-widescreen format [...]" Being prepared is a common theme to a lot of the authors pointers, and anyone who has spent a day at a beach without sunscreen can appreciate it.
One thing I would have liked from this book is more information on storytelling and style of directing. I enjoyed Holdens "Teach Yourself filmmaking" much more for his no-nosense approach to the craft of making movies. Not to say Ascher and Pincus aren't direct, but if I want to be a director, why do I need to learn about the impendance of an audio device or what entails a reverse pulldown workflow? If all I care about is getting the best performance out of the actors I hire?
