The Laws of Mental and Emotional Illness (Definition, Origin, Manifestation, Prognosis and Cure) (Reprints from the Journal of Mental Health Number Two) ReviewThis book is a set of reprints from the Journal of Mental Health (ISSN:0022-2658), a mimeographed quarterly periodical that was published by the Neurotics Anonymous International Liaison from (as best as I can tell) 1965 to 1980. The selected reprints in this volume are from 1966-1969. This, again as far as I can tell, is the second of three volumes created from reprints from the Journal of Mental Health. The first being "self-titled" (Neurotics Anonymous) and the last The Etiology of Mental and Emotional Illness and Health. These books became the standard literature used in the Neurotics Anonymous fellowship, which had previously used Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) literature.
Much of the review I wrote for The Etiology of Mental and Emotional Illness and Health is also applicable here. This book has the same issues with redundancy, preachy tone, and overuse or misuse of scientific language. That being said, it also has it's own strengths.
A variation of the Curves of Emotional Illness and Recovery (pages 76-80) is still used by a successor organization of Neurotics Anonymous, Emotions Anonymous (EA), today. The article (and list of), "Character Traits that Create Illness or Health" (pages 81-82), is simple, profound and accurate.
People interested in the history of Neurotics Anonymous and EA will also find the articles "A Psychiatrist Speaks About Neurotics Anonymous" (pages 107-109) and "A Ministerial Association Endorses Neurotics Anonymous" (109-111) by Dr. Walther H. Lechler and Father William McGrade interesting.
