Define "Normal" ReviewAntonia, a straight-A student, a teacher-pleaser, and a "priss," is assigned Jasmine, a punker, a "in-your-face" non-conformist, for peer counseling in their middle school. Both are certain that the counseling is a waste of their time. But as Antonia's home life disintegrates, she finds she looks forward to meeting with Jazz. And Jazz likes talking with Antonia about her family life as well. The two slowly form a bond.
This is much more than a book about two girls in middle school. It's about the effects that both "good" and "bad" parents have on their children, it's about deciding what is, and isn't, normal, and it's about accepting the non-conformists in our midst.
This is an excellent book for all ages (even though it is about 8th graders, high schoolers can get something from it). Parents, too, should read it - it might help them understand what - and more importantly why - their children are revolting.Define "Normal" Overview

Rewire Your Brain: Think Your Way to a Better Life ReviewThis book looked interesting as the neural plasticity movement is something that has come along in recent decades, since I was trained in neurobiology, and wanted to find out more about it since I felt I was somewhat out of date on new developments. So I bought the book and brought it home.
Then I looked at the back cover and it said the author was the "Director of Training in Mental Health at Kaiser Permanente." I almost threw the book away at that point, having rarely heard anyone say anything positive about Kaiser in the several decades I've been aware of them, and having read and heard a snoot full of negative stuff.
But I started to read it anyway, and I'm glad I did. It's a useful, well written, and informative book on these new ideas related to rewiring your brain. The author does a fine job of explaining the relevant neurobiology without getting too technical, and perhaps even more importantly, explaining how these new scientific developments can be used to rewire your brain. Such recent findings as mirror neurons, spindle cells in the hippocampus, neurogenesis, brain nutrition, differences in the brain between men and women, and many other new findings, get discussed along with their implications for plasticity and rewiring.
The book has a good chapter on brain nutrition which has increasingly come to the forefront in recent years as a way to enhance brain function and prevent its deterioration in age, especially in the case of memory functions, so if you're into vitamins and supplements (or even if you're not), this might be the book for you.
This book is packed with useful information, but I would point out that although this new knowledge about the plasticity of the brain has been called a "revolution," there's nothing really new here. The great Austin Riesen (who I studied under briefly) first demonstrated the growth of synaptic trees and dendrites in response to learning and stimulus enrichment using monkeys as subjects back in the 50s. What's different is that we do know more about it and how to promote it, and it's taken more seriously now by physicians and psychologists and neurobiologists. And perhaps most important, apparently effective evidence based therapies and treatments have been developed.
Overall an excellent and readable book on this subject.Rewire Your Brain: Think Your Way to a Better Life Overview

The Addictive Personality: Understanding the Addictive Process and Compulsive Behavior ReviewCraig Nakken is a family therapist and addictions counsellor at the Family Therapy Institute in St. Paul, Minnesota. He describes the addictive personality as "the most important idea expressed in this book". Nakken believes that some people are more prone to addiction than others. He examines various causes of this including influences in childhood. He does not rule out agenetic element saying that, "In all likelihood, it will be found to be a combination of the two" (environmental and genetic influences). An addictive personality may express itself in any addiction. This has important consequences for treatment. As Nakken observes:- Recovery is not just about breaking off one's relationship with an object or event, though this is of great importance. Recovery is primarily about coming to know one's addictive personality and taking the necessary steps to rid oneself of addictive attitudes, beliefs, values and behaviours. An example of the effect of this is given:- "People in a recovery program for alcohol addiction need to clearly understand thatthey are prone to form a possible addictive relationship with another object or event - food for example. For these people, sobriety acquires a new dimension; instead of only monitoring their relationship with alcohol, they also need to learn how to monitor the addictive part of themselves." Craig Nakken believes that Society "can push a person with addictive tendencies toward addiction". In his book he outlines some values in modern society which are similar to addictive values. For those who are politically conscious this section provides an interesting slant on one effect of a consumer society. The section of the book devoted to the topic of recovery is perhaps the weakest section. This section would have benefited considerably from case studies and more detailed advice. -Reviewed by Patrick HarringtonThe Addictive Personality: Understanding the Addictive Process and Compulsive Behavior Overview

The Laws of Mental and Emotional Illness (Definition, Origin, Manifestation, Prognosis and Cure) (Reprints from the Journal of Mental Health Number Two) ReviewThis book is a set of reprints from the Journal of Mental Health (ISSN:0022-2658), a mimeographed quarterly periodical that was published by the Neurotics Anonymous International Liaison from (as best as I can tell) 1965 to 1980. The selected reprints in this volume are from 1966-1969. This, again as far as I can tell, is the second of three volumes created from reprints from the Journal of Mental Health. The first being "self-titled" (Neurotics Anonymous) and the last The Etiology of Mental and Emotional Illness and Health. These books became the standard literature used in the Neurotics Anonymous fellowship, which had previously used Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) literature.
Much of the review I wrote for The Etiology of Mental and Emotional Illness and Health is also applicable here. This book has the same issues with redundancy, preachy tone, and overuse or misuse of scientific language. That being said, it also has it's own strengths.
A variation of the Curves of Emotional Illness and Recovery (pages 76-80) is still used by a successor organization of Neurotics Anonymous, Emotions Anonymous (EA), today. The article (and list of), "Character Traits that Create Illness or Health" (pages 81-82), is simple, profound and accurate.
People interested in the history of Neurotics Anonymous and EA will also find the articles "A Psychiatrist Speaks About Neurotics Anonymous" (pages 107-109) and "A Ministerial Association Endorses Neurotics Anonymous" (109-111) by Dr. Walther H. Lechler and Father William McGrade interesting.

Definition of Suicide (Master Work) ReviewOnce again I'm writing here a review of one of the most experts in suicidology - Shneidman, Edwin, Ph.D. Dr. Shneidman, the father of Suicidology is the right person write about the defintion of suicide. It is a valuable resource for both students and professional in the mental health area. As Litman, M.D. said - "...this is an epic book of scholarship...", and it surely is. From the characteristics of suicide to an historical view, and a most educational book, I would say that this masterpeace is unique in its scope and content and with no doubt worth reading.Definition of Suicide (Master Work) Overview
