Business Component Factory : A Comprehensive Overview of Component-Based Development for the Enterprise ReviewThis book is the first I have read that really tackles all aspects of what is required for Enterprise Application Development through a CBD approach.
By defining the levels of component granularity and a recursively discrete approach to breaking a business problem down into components and their constituents as finer grained components, the true requirements for CBD are evident and determined. Many books I have read make the same mistake of only discussing development of components at one level (usually what Herzum defines as the distributed component level) and fail to address the many of the aspects of CBD that are not covered by development alone (deployment, testing, management, integration, and a roadmap for the development process and managment of that process through to delivery of a component based system). The book also talks and applies the component levels to the commonly depicted 4 tier architecture and importantly introduces the concept of components needing to be not only strongly typed for internal systems but also strongly tagged (supporting XML based component messaging/invocation) for virtual and extended systems. The coverage of what is required from a Component Execution Environment (CEE) when components are more course grained than simple distributed components is well covered and continues to define the true requirements for a Business Component Execution Environment (BCVM).
The book is a must read for anyone serious about adopting CBD on and enterprise scale. The book goes well beyond the common text available for CBD (that all concentrate on the short sighted development requirements for distributed components in a fine grained component containment model). I agree with another reviewer that for those of us that have been developing systems in EJB, COM+/DCOM and CORBA much of the book covers lessons we have painfully had to learn in developing multiple component based systems that have to inter-operate, but it goes beyond that in looking at what is necessary for component based systems at the next architectural level (one that may well incorporate disparate distributed component models).Business Component Factory : A Comprehensive Overview of Component-Based Development for the Enterprise Overview

Leadership Is an Art Review
On page one of Leadership Is an Art Max Depree writes, "The book is about the art of leadership: liberating people to do what is required of them in the most effective and humane way possible". This is a theme that runs throughout this very wise and in every way excellent work. The following quotes provide some of the flavor of Depree's enlightened and inspiring thinking:
*The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between the two, the leader must become a servant and a debtor.
*In addition to all of the ratios and goals and parameters and bottom lines, it is fundamental that leaders endorse a concept of persons. This begins with an understanding of the diversity of people's gifts and talents and skills.
*Understanding and accepting diversity enables us to see that each of us is needed. It also enables us to begin to think about being abandoned to the strengths of others, of admitting that we cannot know or do everything.
*Leaders don't inflict pain; they bear pain.
*First, as a Christian I believe that each person is made in the image of God. For those of us who have received the gift of leadership from the people we lead, this belief has enormous implications.
*Leaders owe people space, space in the sense of freedom. Freedom in the sense of enabling our gifts to be exercised.
*Participative management is not democratic. Having a say differs from having a vote.
*Interestingly, though in organizations like ours we need a lot of freedom, there is no room for license. Discipline is what it takes to do the job.
*One of the important things leaders need to learn is to recognize the signals of impending deterioration.
*Without forgiveness, there can be no real freedom to act...
Depree has given us an abiding philosophy of leadership. Actually operating in alignment with these principles demands a very high level of integrity - one that few leaders ever do attain. Those that do so unleash forces of transformation resulting in high performance high involvement organizations.
This book characterizes a commercial arena filled with vocational potential. I give it the highest recommendation.

Selling to the C-Suite: What Every Executive Wants You to Know About Successfully Selling to the Top ReviewIn tough times, spending limits are always curtailed with the effect that more decisions are made or need approval by someone in the C-Suite. The age old recommendation of "calling high" is therefore of high actuality. Yet many sales people struggle to get access to the senior executives and even more so to hold meaningful conversations at this level. In today's economic environment this capability gap can become career threatening.
« Selling to the C-Suite » by Nicholas A.C. Read and Stephen J. Bistritz offers very practical advise how to close this gap. It is not one of those thousands of books flooding the business book market written in the style of "This is what I did, I was successful, there is no reason it should not work for you." Instead, "Selling to the C-Suite" is packed with research based concepts that have successfully been applied by thousands of practitioners. Instead of looking what people did who were successful to sell to the C-suite, the research focused on how senior executives want to buy.
With the concept of the relevant executive, the authors help salespeople to understand exactly what "calling high" means for a particular client. This relevant executive cannot be identified by just looking at an organization chart. The relevant executive is not only defined by his/her high rank but also by his/her high influence. The book gives good clues how to determine this influence.
The authors are also helping us to understand , based on their research, when senior executive are involved in a buying decision. It is not when they actually sign the contract. They are involved early when a problem surfaces where "work-arounds" do no longer contain the consequences caused by the problem and a project needs to be defined for finding a new way of how to address this problem. Usually when the vision is clear how the problem can be solved by buying something, the selection of the vendor offering suitable solutions is delegated. The executive's interest in the project increases again once the solution is in place. At this point in time they want to know what value the solution actually delivers to their business.
Calling to executives early, requires a higher proficiency of selling. Indicators are given helping an individual to check his/her actual level of sales proficiency and throughout the book practical advice can be found what it takes to close the gap.
Preparation is key in selling to the C-Suite. There is a chapter in the book helping to gain an understanding what executives want. In an appendix of the book, there is a very practical guide to customer research how to find clues of what a particular executive wants specifically.
How to gain access and how to establish credibility with executives are other important topics. It also has been said many times, that sellers today are no longer "messengers of value" they have to be "providers of value". How this can be achieved is also very clearly explained? The explanation that value is to be articulated differently depending on the status of the customer project is particularly insightful. It is recommended to use a Value Hypothesis to articulate the problem, a Value Proposition to help with the buying decision and a Value Message, to confirm the value that has been delivered through the solution. However the structure recommended for the Value Proposition seems to be a bit to rigid. I doubt that the template where just some blanks are to be filled in is still effective today.
Knowing when executives are involved in a project is also a key concept how to cultivate loyalty.
To help the reader to transition from knowing to doing, there is an appendix with worksheets providing a tool box how to apply the concepts in daily practice.
This description of the content does not represent the flow of the chapters in the book. Not mentioned yet is Chapter 2 of the book.
This is one of the most concise discussions on B2B Marketing, how it differs from B2C Marketing and how the Internet has changed the role of selling I have ever seen. This chapter alone is an alternative reason for buying the book. Understanding its contents is not only relevant for people wanting to sell to the C-Suite. It is essential for anyone who seeks to have a lasting career in direct sales.
For people wanting to sell to the C-Suite this book is a must read anyhow.

Diffusion of Innovations, 5th Edition ReviewVirtually every piece of change management literature that I have read since being introduced to Diffusion of Innovation either has its foundation in this book or its thesis can be understood in terms of Everett's framework. Do not let the 1962 date of the first edition (up to fifth edition at this writing), make you question the work's currency. While it is regularly called a classic, it is in no way an antique.
One caveat. Whether you are going to respond to D of I as positively as I did will depend in part on your cognitive style. If you are comfortable reading about abstractions that grew out of research from largely non-business fields of study and are comfortable personally having to make the leap from theory to practical application, you will value this book. If on the other hand you need a clearly defined process for applying the framework and have a hard time generalizing non-business research to your own world, you probably want to look elsewhere. Though Diffusion of Innovation is more abstract and less business focused, I personally find D of I to have more practical value than works such as Daryl Conner's Managing at the Speed of Change or John Kotter's Leading Change, both of which I feel are better at creating a sensitivity to change management concepts and fueling a sense of need for "expert" consulting resources than they do providing tools and knowledge.
I have used Rogers' framework to craft change programs in corporate and consulting environments and can confirm that, if you are willing to make an investment in understanding how its concepts can be applied within your context, D of I is an invaluable resource.
Bottom line: a great framework based on sound research, well written and entertaining, and, if you can make the leap from abstraction to application, eminently practical.
