Worldliness: Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World ReviewAny book on worldliness faces a difficult challenge. The author who takes too firm a stand on issues may slip into legalism while the author who takes too lax a stand may slip into the worldliness he seeks to avoid. The discerning author will need to tread the line, being careful to say no more than Scripture does while still dealing effectively with issues of contemporary importance. Because such a book is long overdue I was pleased to see that Worldliness would be coming from C.J. Mahaney and those whom John Piper affectionately refers to as "his gang."
Mahaney handles the introductions in this book, beginning with a reflection called "Is This Verse in Your Bible?" He biblically defines worldliness saying that this world we're not supposed to love is "the organized system of human civilization that is actively hostile to God and alienated from God." Worldliness is a love for this fallen world and, specifically, "to gratify and exalt oneself to the exclusion of God." Mahaney is careful to point out that worldliness is not extrinsic to us but intrinsic, inhabiting our fallen hearts. Worldliness does not consist of outward actions (though such actions can certainly be evidence of worldliness) but instead is a heart attitude that rebels against God. The antidote to worldliness is the cross of Christ. "Only through the power of the cross of Christ can we successfully resist the seduction of the fallen world." Worldliness dulls our affections for Christ and distracts our hearts from him. Hence it is so serious "because Christ is so glorious." While resisting worldliness is the theme of the book, its aim is to exalt Christ.
Each of the subsequent chapters is meant to build on this foundation. In "God, My Heart, and Media," Craig Cabaniss discusses issues related to the pervasiveness of media in our society. Cabaniss grounds the discussion in grace, saying "any discussion of biblical obedience, including entertainment guidelines, must spring from a robust understanding of grace." He offers the fair warning that we must guard our hearts as the conscience is prone to become dull over time. As we relax our standards and as we engage in ungodly media habits, our hearts may slowly become dulled to the things of Christ. He warns against the temptation to see anyone with stricter standards as us as legalistic while seeing anyone with more lenient standards as worldly. He encourages us to view proactively, to view accountably and to view gratefully.
In "God, My Heart, and Music," Bob Kauflin takes on the subject of music, beginning with the fact that music was God's idea long before it crossed the mind of any human. He states that "listening to music without discernment and godly intent reveals a heart willing to flirt with the world." Saying that music itself is amoral (there are no holy or unholy harmonies or melodies) he warns that music does convey three things: content, context and culture. The Christian will need to discern what is being communicated through the music he listens to in order to ensure that he is not, perhaps inadvertently, absorbing messages that would conflict with his Christian faith. Kauflin closes with some good thoughts on using music for the glory of God.
To this point I felt the book was excellent. Though in a work of this nature each of the chapters could be little more than a cursory introduction to what might have been a book-length project, I felt the authors did a great job of teaching, exhorting and illustrating while avoiding those perilous extremes of worldliness and legalism. Unfortunately I felt that Worldliness soon stalled out badly. And this is where the job of a book reviewer gets tough. What do you do when you like an author (or a group of authors) but just don't like the book they've produced?
The fourth chapter, entitled "God, My Heart, and Stuff" was authored by Dave Harvey. While I haven't ever met Dave (at least to my recollection) I have benefited from reading his book When Sinners Say 'I Do'. From my experience in reading that book I had high hopes for his contribution to this one. I was disappointed. While he addressed the heart so well in his book on marriage, in this case I found little of real depth. The next chapter, from the pen of C.J. Mahaney is titled "God, My Heart, and Clothes" and discusses the issue of modesty. It had very little application to men beyond stating that this is an issue for pastors and fathers to consider. Ultimately he provided a lot of quotes and a few good thoughts on modesty and encouraged women to dress properly. Both of the book's appendices carried on the theme, with "A Modesty Heart Check" and "Considering Modesty on Your Wedding Day." But this was a superficial look at modesty and one that offered little that we haven't heard C.J. and others say before. It did not take the issue of modesty to men (where modesty of heart and intention comes into play) but instead serves as just another encouragement to girls to check their neckline and test their hemline. Jeff Purswell concludes with a chapter titled "How to Love the World" in which he reminds the reader "To impart biblical discernment in areas that increasingly escape the scrutiny of the evangelical world so intent on 'relating to the culture.'" He offers a summary of redemptive history in the grid of Creation, Fall, Redemption and Consummation and gives the reader a three-part charge: to enjoy the world, to engage the world and to evangelize the world. These last three chapters and the appendices were uniformly disappointing to me. I couldn't help but feel that they represented somewhat passionless efforts. Missing was the depth and intensity I'd expect from a book authored (or edited) by Mahaney.
Had I been hoping that this book might be another Humility or The Cross Centered Life, Worldliness would have been quite a disappointment. Though it got off to a strong start, it quickly tapered out. In the end it just seemed shallow--a work of far less depth and offering far less application than I'm accustomed to seeing from a book with Mahaney's name on the cover. It came across as a cobbled-together collection of essays of unequal value. I almost feel I should apologize when I say, it just isn't that good of a book.Worldliness: Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World Overview

Untamed: Reactivating a Missional Form of Discipleship (Shapevine) ReviewThere's a lot going for this book in terms of ideas and in trying to capture a missional form of discipleship. But it seems like a lot of effort is needed in sorting out the "chaff" from the "wheat". I did appreciate the efforts and intended applications of the book, overall though it's follow through seems a little off and it results in a mixed bag of ideas.
The foundational opening chapters of Hirsch's book I found good and thought provoking. But it's when they then develop from that truth, that things get a little subjective and disappointing. Untamed says that the focus of all faith and discipleship is found in the person of Jesus. How we relate to God and to each other must be from a Messianic viewpoint. They explain (very well in my opinion) that the trouble in the church is that there is too much subjectivity about Jesus, we remake Him in our own image. Therefore we must go back to a 'Biblical' definition of the nature of Christ to have a "true" picture. Hirsch uses the "Shema" (Hear Oh Israel) statement of Jesus' teaching for their foundational truth , i.e. You must love God with all you heart and you neighbor as yourself. So far so good. Then "untamed" goes on in the next chapters to relate that to becoming disciples and followers of this Jesus.
But rather then and go look at the "biblical" definitions of what Discipleship should too look like. The Hirsch's use their personal walk of faith as a methodology for working out the faith. Which is very subjective and reliant of their personal "church' experiences in Australia and elsewhere. But doesn't the New testament in it's background and teaching gives us a clear definitive pictures of what discipleship should look like already ? Otherwise what we can get, is a picture of the body of Christ as we came to faith and our personal preferences in it's style. Don't misunderstand what I'm saying, the expression of our faith can be according to our cultural and spiritual upbringing. There is no "accounting" for taste. But in the matter of living under the Messiah in His Kingdom, there's defined "life" boundaries and methods of evangelism. For example, prayer must be one of important foundations for discipleship growth. As Jesus not only "role modeled" praying, taught on the contents of a prayer life, but also gave commands to pray. Instead what we read in "Untamed" is a series of "straw men" arguments and discussions about Christian Community. What would have been better is a looking of what Biblical discipleship is defined as, what are the foundational important aspects to get right and then application of these to our fellowships and churches.
In the rest of the chapters then, I found I was reading a "how to" book of stories and personal value judgments of the Hirsch's. These, like all similar "how to " writings, can be are very hit and miss. Some good, some bland and some just deeply held opinions. Which is a pity, as it seems like the authors have the ability to define a brand of discipleship on a more biblical grounding. Whilst reading "Untamed" I also got the impression that they are trying to reinvent the " missional wheel " .A lot of what they write about was also explored in the early 1970's by the "Jesus" movement. Of wanting to relate the gospel to then hippie generation and "scene".
There were similarly many "Jesus Freaks' of the day who needed to be discipled and brought into the Faith. And it was through missional trial and sometimes cultural error; that they learned to build not on their on "subjective" prevailing sand, but on the eternal biblical Rock of ages.Untamed: Reactivating a Missional Form of Discipleship (Shapevine) Overview

The New Tolerance: How a cultural movement threatens to destroy you, your faith, and your children ReviewThis book is a "must read" for anyone who wants to understand the reasons underlying our nation's cultural collapse. It also explains why our society tolerates everything EXCEPT Christianity.
Basically, McDowell explains how today's definition of "tolerance" differs radically from the traditional dictionary definition. He discusses how and why the definition of tolerance has changed, how the new tolerance manifests itself in our society, and concludes by giving concrete ideas for Christian witness in the midst of today's culture.
The traditional definition of tolerance means to "endure" or put up with something, such as a person's behavior, attitudes or beliefs, without necessarily agreeing with them. In other words, love the sinner, hate the sin. However, today's definition of tolerance is more like "love the sinner, love the sin." Today's definition of tolerance states that a person's behavior, beliefs and attitudes are inseparable from who he or she is. Therefore, any attack on behaviors, beliefs or attitudes is seen as a personal attack.
The evolution of tolerance is the result of the evolution of other aspects of human existence, including the concept of truth, over three distinct eras. During the first era, ethical theism, people believed that all truth was revealed by God. In the second era, modernism, the emphasis shifted from God to mankind, and the concept of truth changed from being something that is revealed by God to being something that is discernable by man. Finally, in the third and present era, post-modernism, truth has changed from being something that is collectively true for human beings to something that is determined by each individual person, based on that person's culture, which in turn consists of behaviors, attitudes and beliefs.
Because each person's idea of truth is based on their unique culture, and because all people are created equally, the new tolerance decrees that no one person can claim to possess a superior truth, or a truth that is "more true" than other people's truths. Rather, all truth claims are equally valid.
The idea of equal truth claims has profound implications for those of us who believe in Jesus Christ and absolute standards of right and wrong. These implications include the death of truth, the disappearance of virtue, the demise of justice, the loss of conviction, the privatization of faith, the tyranny of the individual, the disintegration of human rights. the dominance of feeling, the exaltation of nature, and the descent into extremes.
Furthermore, it especially targets Christians because Christians believe that their truth claim -- Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior -- is in fact superior to any other truth claims. Because Christianity claims to have "The Way, the Truth and the Life" and does not accept other truth claims as equally valid or actively condone or participate in them, it is therefore "intolerant." And because Christianity is intolerant, it is therefore okay for a "tolerant" society to persecute it in any way necessary to force it to become tolerant. That is why the mere mention or presence of Christian concepts or symbology provokes rage and concerted efforts to obliterate them.
McDowell explains some of the "tactics of tolerance" and how these are being applied to make Christians conform. These include equating nonagreement with phobia, nonconformity with hate, conviction with fanaticism, Christian creeds, prayers and symbols with discrimination, and selective segregation with justice.
Having laid that groundwork in the early chapters of the book, McDowell goes on to cite how the "new tolerance" has invaded every sphere of our society and how it underlies just about every factor contributing to our culture's breakdown. He shows that the new tolerance is the common thread that explains why a crucifix suspended in urine is considered art, why animals and the environment are more important than people, why sexual perversion is encouraged while traditional families are discouraged, and a host of other societal phenomena. Following that, McDowell gives practical advice for witnessing to Christ without giving in to the new tolerance.
The entire book is fascinating, but what helped me most personally are two things. First, McDowell articulates the new tolerance using concrete terminology; he gives names and a new vocabulary for describing the effects of the new tolerance. Second, he shows how the new tolerance relates to and is responsible for a vast array of problems in society, how it is the common thread running between all of them.
I strongly recommend this book to any of you who would like to understand the new tolerance better and what you can do to fight it.The New Tolerance: How a cultural movement threatens to destroy you, your faith, and your children Overview

Chazown: Define Your Vision. Pursue Your Passion. Live Your Life on Purpose. ReviewAre you as happy as you want to be? If you were lying on your death bed and knew that time was running out--and also knew that your "doing" days were over--what kinds of thoughts would be running through your mind?
This might be a poor way to start a review for a book that I really, really want you to read. I hope not. I hope it rings a responsive chord. In 1991 I had a heart attack, and for 48 hours, I did not know whether I'd live or die. Those hours were filled with regrets--a realization of great hopes unrealized.
I got a second chance, but this book made me realize that I still have many hopes unrealized. After reading the book I now know why--and what to do about it. Chazown is from the Hebrew and it means "vision."
God has a unique plan or vision for your life, but do you know what it is? Do you believe that the God of the universe could have a plan or vision that fulfilling it would bring you more happiness, joy, and peace than you thought imaginable? More than your own plans even?
Groeschel lays out a way of finding that vision and acting on it that revolves around three knowable things, things that will take time to explore:
Your core values: What do you get passionate about? What gets you righteously angry when it is violated?
Your spiritual gifts: What are the things you do noticeably well, and love to do?
Your experiences: These experiences, both good and bad that make you who you are today.
The book lays out step by step how to focus and clarify these three things and identify where they converge. The author provides downloadable forms and a journal to help you with the thinking needed to find the answers to all the questions. It is a process, not a crash course--but a worthwhile process. It is simple, but not easy.
Armchair Interviews says: This is a challenge to you. Get this book if you are ready to maximize joy, peace, and happiness!Chazown: Define Your Vision. Pursue Your Passion. Live Your Life on Purpose. Overview

Success God's Way ReviewThis book is head and shoulders above any "success" book I have ever read. I have a virtual library of success literature by all the familiar authors, Norman Vincent Peale, Og Mandino, Zig Ziglar, et. al., but after adding this book to my collection I might as well throw all those other books away. Dr. Stanley does a splendid job of giving you the "nuts and bolts" of what it takes to live a successful life, presented in a straightforward, no-nonsense style. Unlike so much of the self-help junk on the market today, this book gives you PRACTICAL advice on HOW to achieve "success God's way." Humility: True Greatness ReviewC. J. Mahaney has done it again. He has written three other books that have all hit the mark in terms of insightful teaching that is characterized by fidelity to the Bible and practical application to life today (his others are: The Cross-Centered Life; Christ, Our Mediator; Sex, Romance, and the Glory of God). Humility: True Greatness is no different. Here he brings to light the Scripture's teaching on the damning sinfulness of pride, and the glorious attractiveness of humility. The book contains the following chapters:
Part 1: Our Greatest Friend, Our Greatest Enemy
- The Promise of Humility
- The Perils of Pride
Part 2: The Great Reversal
- Greatness Redefined
- Greatness Demonstrated
Part 3: Our Great Pursuit
- As Each Day Begins
- As Each Day Ends
- For Special Focus
- Identifying Evidences of Grace
- Encouraging Others
- Inviting and Pursuing Correction
- Responding Humbly to Trials
- A Legacy of Greatness
- A Final Word
- How to Weaken Pride and Cultivate Humility: A List of Suggestions
This book should be required reading for every Christian. Sadly today, our churches and larger denominational ministries foster a sense of pride and achievement. We must recover an understanding of true greatness if we want to see victory in the Christian life and true revival in our generation.
Although, he would certainly deny it (as is clear, if you have ever had the privilege of hearing him speak) Mahaney himself is truly a humble man, and I believe that is one of the reasons he has been so mightily used by God. Buy the book, and get started learning humility.
