The Joy of Preaching ReviewPhillips Brooks was an Episcopal minister in late-19th century Boston whose Lyman Beecher Lectures on Preaching set the standard for generations to come. When Dean Willard Sperry, of the Harvard Divinity School, told his predecessor that he had been invited to give the Beecher lectures, he was asked, "But what are you going to say? There isn't anything left to say. Phillips Brooks said all that can be said about preaching, and all that needs to be said, in his lectures long ago." Dean Sperry replied that he need not have labored the point. "I was already painfully aware of my dilemma."
The enduring appeal of Brooks' lectures may be seen in the fact that, as the twenty-first century begins, they are still in print and still being recommended by professors of preaching around the country.
To Brooks, preaching is "the communication of truth through personality." Thus his lectures have as much to do with the person in the pulpit as with the task of preaching. One cannot read the chapters of this book without feeling the force of Brooks' own personality. But there is also God's plenty of truth in the book, phrased in such a memorable way that it will leave an enduring impact.
Outside Trinity Church on Copley Square in Boston there is a statue of Phillips Brooks, but one might well say that his true monument is this book containing his views on preaching. The Joy of Preaching Overview

Theology of Ministry (Theological Inquiries) ReviewIf you want to understand Christian ministry in light of Vatican II this is the best book out there. O'Meara is an expert and he writes in a manner that gives you a clear picture of the nature of ministry. This book is often used as a texbook for graduate level theology courses. Excellent reference work. It is also useful in understanding the ecclesiology of the Church.Theology of Ministry (Theological Inquiries) Overview

Wishful Thinking: A Seeker's ABC ReviewThis book is ostensibly a dictionary of terms related to religion and faith. In reality, it's a collection of Buechner's thoughts on these issues. Some of his "definitions" are a page long, some a paragraph, some just a sentence. They all manage to capture the essence of an idea and make you look at it in sometimes startling new ways. Take, for example, his definition for Lust: "Lust is the desire for salt from someone who is dying of thirst." Or Gluttony: "A glutton is someone who raids the icebox to try to cure spiritual malnutrition."
And that's just the short form. When Buechner lets his thoughts wander, the book goes from amusing to engaging and engrossing. It's like having an amusing conversation with a delightful person, who just happens to have a lot more insight into religion than you do.
I won't say this book changed my life, though I'm tempted. It did expand my perceptions, showed me alternate ways of looking at familiar things, and restored my sense of wonder in my (Christian) faith and in the world around me.
I heartily recommend it to any "Seeker" of any faith.Wishful Thinking: A Seeker's ABC Overview

The True Woman: The Beauty and Strength of a Godly Woman ReviewThe True Woman is one of the first books I have read about biblical womanhood (the only other one I can think of is Girl Talk). I had seen some of Susan Hunt's books around my parents' house, but had never read any. On a whim, I picked it up at my school library, and found a treasure. Its subtitle is a perfect summary of its content: "The beauty and strength of a godly woman."
This book is encouraging and much-needed. Hunt begins by defining the "true woman" versus the "new woman." In the next section, she describes four aspects of the true woman's identity - for example, "a reflection of redemption." Lastly, she discusses four aspects of the true woman's virtue - purity, piety, domesticity, and submission. The book is clear, balanced, and realistic; it is firmly rooted in and built upon Scripture.
Refreshingly relevant are the real-life stories before each chapter, dealing with issues such as infertility, financial problems, and even rape. Hunt argues from truth to experience, but through these stories she shows the relevance of the truth she is sharing. And the stories testify to the power and grace of the gospel in women's lives.
Some readers may weary of Hunt's obviously Presbyterian perspective with her frequent repetition of the phrase "covenant community," but it was not a huge issue for me, although I would prefer simpler phraseology. Also, Hunt's language and style may be difficult for some; she writes clearly, but intellectually. However, the book would be an excellent resource for a one-on-one discipling relationship or a small group, especially with the inclusion of discussion questions at the end of each chapter.
I greatly enjoyed The True Woman, and I definitely plan on rereading it and absorbing the valuable concepts it sets forth. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about what it means to be a woman of God.The True Woman: The Beauty and Strength of a Godly Woman Overview

Spiritual Theology: A Systematic Study of the Christian Life ReviewThere is little doubt that from a purely dogmatic standpoint, this is one of the more thorough and exhaustively documented treatments of spiritual theology available today. It is highly intellectual, extensively documented (and I do mean extensively), and a top work of scholarship. As I will discuss below, it is an improveable effort in at least two ways, but from the standpoint of scholarship and depth, this book pretty much blows away most everything that's passing for spiritual theology and spiritual discipline development in Christian bookstores these days.
For those interested in Chan's theological perspective, I would classify him, for lack of better terminology, as being in the left wing of Reformed theology. Chan does seem to be in the Calvinistic camp on the question of man's condition and status before God, and it is this Reformed perspective that tends to lay the groundwork for much of the book. Having said this, the book is quite ecumenical, and it is really amazing the sheer volume of Christians, both past and present, that Chan interacts with in this book. If there's one thing that's beyond debate, in my view, it's that the scholarship exhibited by Chan here is breathtaking and will be much appreciated by those looking for a very in-depth and substantive read.
The book attempts to lay out a systematic approach to spiritual development, and urges readers to develop and adopt a rule of life that integrates individual and corporate spiritual development with an eye towards connecting the global Christian community more closely. Chan spends a good deal of time not only developing many familiar (though some unfamiliar) spiritual disciplines, but also interacting with far more than the Western spiritual experience. In a book like this, Chan's extensive interaction with Eastern and Asian forms of Christian spirituality is very informative and most helpful.
Chan is clearly and rightly concerned about the lack of spiritual development that seems to be dominating much of Protestantism today. In our zeal to adopt individualistic spiritualities that spurn the institutional church and particularly ecclesiastical heirarchy, Chan believes that Protestants have lost a very important aspect of spiritual development - community and global development of a distinctively Christian spirituality. He's right. This book is clearly aimed at getting mainly evangelical Protestants to take another look at the spiritual disciplines not as things to check off on a purely personal 'to do' list, but as the truly life transforming disciplines they are, and to see such spiritual development not purely as individualistic or personal, but as corporate and communally interactive. This mentality is mostly welcome, and it is something evangelicals need to reexamine. The medieval church in particular knew a lot more about spiritual development than many of us today, and Chan very properly has no hang-ups about interacting and incorporating their views and practices into a contemporary rule of life for spiritual development, and neither should we - though this is an area where theological discernment is called for, as Chan himself argues. His remark that 'if Christians today were to learn discernment in large numbers, most television evangelists would go out of business' is spot on, in my view.
I will mention 2 regrets that compel me to the 4 star rating. First, Chan's dogmatic and historical scholarship are impeccable, but his interaction with Scripture is not. The reader will find that Chan seems to quote from just about everything and everybody - with the exception of Scripture. His interaction with Scripture is sparse and surface level. Thus, this book deals much more with how the church has pursued spiritual development then with what Scripture actually says about such things. Big weakness. Secondly, it surprised me that in a book on spiritual development via the spiritual disciplines, little to no mention was made of fasting. This strikes me as a rather glaring omission, particularly since fasting is the one spiritual discipline that has been most abandoned within evangelicalism and is the least understood in terms of its purposes and goals.
With these critiques in mind, I nonetheless recommend the book as a very substantive and needed survey and development of spiritual theology. This is not a book for the beginner, or for someone looking for fluff and a light read. This book 'definitely ain't that'. But it rewards careful study and contemplation.Spiritual Theology: A Systematic Study of the Christian Life Overview

Terror in the Name of God: Why Religious Militants Kill ReviewI was shocked by the ferocity with which a couple of reviewers panned this book. It reminded me of the initial outcry and emotional vetting that took place right after 9/11. Tellingly, at that moment when a vast majority of the civilian population was screaming for blood, it was the military who pushed for calmer heads to prevail. Knowing your enemy is a big part of suceeding and if we as Americans can be faulted with anything, it's our arrogance. I submit that being able to mentally hold an idea and at the same time not agreeing with it is a level of intellectual prowess not acheived by some reveiwers.
This book is fantastic. I could not put it down. Unlike most books of this sort which by necessity rely primarily on anecdotal evidence, this is serious work. It is closer to hard science in its procedure than most of the rabble rousing goobly gook masquerading as serious books on terrorism.
Prof. Stern is not trying to morally equate anything. She simply tries to expose some terrorist core motivations which are decidedly different from those of a soldier. Traditional phase-line thinking will not win thin war on terrorism. We need more thinkers of Stern's ilk to raise the level of the discourse.Terror in the Name of God: Why Religious Militants Kill Overview

Worldliness: Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World ReviewAny book on worldliness faces a difficult challenge. The author who takes too firm a stand on issues may slip into legalism while the author who takes too lax a stand may slip into the worldliness he seeks to avoid. The discerning author will need to tread the line, being careful to say no more than Scripture does while still dealing effectively with issues of contemporary importance. Because such a book is long overdue I was pleased to see that Worldliness would be coming from C.J. Mahaney and those whom John Piper affectionately refers to as "his gang."
Mahaney handles the introductions in this book, beginning with a reflection called "Is This Verse in Your Bible?" He biblically defines worldliness saying that this world we're not supposed to love is "the organized system of human civilization that is actively hostile to God and alienated from God." Worldliness is a love for this fallen world and, specifically, "to gratify and exalt oneself to the exclusion of God." Mahaney is careful to point out that worldliness is not extrinsic to us but intrinsic, inhabiting our fallen hearts. Worldliness does not consist of outward actions (though such actions can certainly be evidence of worldliness) but instead is a heart attitude that rebels against God. The antidote to worldliness is the cross of Christ. "Only through the power of the cross of Christ can we successfully resist the seduction of the fallen world." Worldliness dulls our affections for Christ and distracts our hearts from him. Hence it is so serious "because Christ is so glorious." While resisting worldliness is the theme of the book, its aim is to exalt Christ.
Each of the subsequent chapters is meant to build on this foundation. In "God, My Heart, and Media," Craig Cabaniss discusses issues related to the pervasiveness of media in our society. Cabaniss grounds the discussion in grace, saying "any discussion of biblical obedience, including entertainment guidelines, must spring from a robust understanding of grace." He offers the fair warning that we must guard our hearts as the conscience is prone to become dull over time. As we relax our standards and as we engage in ungodly media habits, our hearts may slowly become dulled to the things of Christ. He warns against the temptation to see anyone with stricter standards as us as legalistic while seeing anyone with more lenient standards as worldly. He encourages us to view proactively, to view accountably and to view gratefully.
In "God, My Heart, and Music," Bob Kauflin takes on the subject of music, beginning with the fact that music was God's idea long before it crossed the mind of any human. He states that "listening to music without discernment and godly intent reveals a heart willing to flirt with the world." Saying that music itself is amoral (there are no holy or unholy harmonies or melodies) he warns that music does convey three things: content, context and culture. The Christian will need to discern what is being communicated through the music he listens to in order to ensure that he is not, perhaps inadvertently, absorbing messages that would conflict with his Christian faith. Kauflin closes with some good thoughts on using music for the glory of God.
To this point I felt the book was excellent. Though in a work of this nature each of the chapters could be little more than a cursory introduction to what might have been a book-length project, I felt the authors did a great job of teaching, exhorting and illustrating while avoiding those perilous extremes of worldliness and legalism. Unfortunately I felt that Worldliness soon stalled out badly. And this is where the job of a book reviewer gets tough. What do you do when you like an author (or a group of authors) but just don't like the book they've produced?
The fourth chapter, entitled "God, My Heart, and Stuff" was authored by Dave Harvey. While I haven't ever met Dave (at least to my recollection) I have benefited from reading his book When Sinners Say 'I Do'. From my experience in reading that book I had high hopes for his contribution to this one. I was disappointed. While he addressed the heart so well in his book on marriage, in this case I found little of real depth. The next chapter, from the pen of C.J. Mahaney is titled "God, My Heart, and Clothes" and discusses the issue of modesty. It had very little application to men beyond stating that this is an issue for pastors and fathers to consider. Ultimately he provided a lot of quotes and a few good thoughts on modesty and encouraged women to dress properly. Both of the book's appendices carried on the theme, with "A Modesty Heart Check" and "Considering Modesty on Your Wedding Day." But this was a superficial look at modesty and one that offered little that we haven't heard C.J. and others say before. It did not take the issue of modesty to men (where modesty of heart and intention comes into play) but instead serves as just another encouragement to girls to check their neckline and test their hemline. Jeff Purswell concludes with a chapter titled "How to Love the World" in which he reminds the reader "To impart biblical discernment in areas that increasingly escape the scrutiny of the evangelical world so intent on 'relating to the culture.'" He offers a summary of redemptive history in the grid of Creation, Fall, Redemption and Consummation and gives the reader a three-part charge: to enjoy the world, to engage the world and to evangelize the world. These last three chapters and the appendices were uniformly disappointing to me. I couldn't help but feel that they represented somewhat passionless efforts. Missing was the depth and intensity I'd expect from a book authored (or edited) by Mahaney.
Had I been hoping that this book might be another Humility or The Cross Centered Life, Worldliness would have been quite a disappointment. Though it got off to a strong start, it quickly tapered out. In the end it just seemed shallow--a work of far less depth and offering far less application than I'm accustomed to seeing from a book with Mahaney's name on the cover. It came across as a cobbled-together collection of essays of unequal value. I almost feel I should apologize when I say, it just isn't that good of a book.Worldliness: Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World Overview

Holman Bible Atlas: A Complete Guide to the Expansive Geography of Biblical History (Broadman & Holman Reference) ReviewThe Holman Bible Atlas: A Complete Guide to the Expansive Geography of Biblical History is worthy of reading in its own right. It is a beautiful and super-informative volume. It is an invaluable tool for using while studying the Bible. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
The Atlas is laid out in chronological order. It begins taking a general look at the geography of the ancient Near East. It ends with the expansion of Christianity up to 300 AD. In between these two time periods, the Atlas follows the sweep of the geographical history of the Israelites and the early Christians.
Every Chapter is filled with beautiful pictures, informative charts and lists, and excellent maps. I found especially useful the cutaway topographical maps such as the one used to vividly show the course of Joshua's military campaigns.
As great as the maps and pictures are...this atlas has a lot more to offer. Each chapter analyzes the economic, cultural and religious practices common in the time periods being discussed. Side bar articles discuss some of these issues in an in-depth manner.
In this atlas I found clear, visual explanations of several Biblical topics that had previously been nebulous at best in my mind. The chart on page twenty-eight alone is worth the price of the book. It is the first chart I have ever seen that clearly explains the relation between the Solar Months, the Hebrew Names of Lunar Months, the Feasts and Rainfalls, the Agricultural Activities and Pastoral Activities in ancient Israel.
Another great feature of this atlas that I have found useful is the bibliography for studying the topics presented here in greater depth...now I have more books to read!
I give this excellent book my highest recommendation. Get a copy today.Holman Bible Atlas: A Complete Guide to the Expansive Geography of Biblical History (Broadman & Holman Reference) Overview

A Theology for Christian Education ReviewThis was an excellent book, the author's thesis is to integrate theology and Christian education attempting to not only influence the church in general, but to holistically impact the church. They see theology as a filter to sift through social sciences and allow the methodology to proceed from them. They do not see education and theology as two enemies, but as teaching which needs integrated. Their structural approach toward systematic theology covers a large area of doctrines which impact church and life. The authors fulfilled the purpose of integrating education and theology through the explanation of systematic theology followed by its application.
Regarding the integration of social sciences, the authors did not meet their goal. The arguments in the second chapter adequately laid out five levels of integration and social science. They concluded, if education is going to be Christian it has to see theology as the filter which social sciences are integrated, which produces Christian education. Chapters three through ten cover the various topics of systematic theology, but do not adequately interact with the integration of social science. Chapter eleven is an attempt to move toward a theologically informed approach to education. The authors state the chapter is not a complete "systematic theory of education" because it does not include the "social science theories." They did touch on learning taxonomies, but did not inform the reader that this was a form of integration. At this point, the authors loose one of their primary goals stated to attain Christian education.
The authors argued for integrating social sciences with theology, but never interacted with social science integration itself. This is a significant point considering the authors equated proper integration with true Christian education. The only thing that seems like a plausible reason for avoiding this interaction is the authors may not have agreed on exactly what Christian education should and should not integrate, but this is only a guess.
Approaching Christian education from systematic theology provides a great start for the church. It is an ordered coherent picture of the Christian faith. The authors point out; it is a "means to an end and not the end itself." This reminds the teacher to focus on holistic discipleship and gospel growth and not simply delivering content alone. Helping the learner understand how to inject other areas of theology into Christian education would have strengthened the book. An example of this would be the teaching of biblical theology since it allows the learner to see the metanarrative of Scripture and provides a grid to better understand systematic theology.
The book carries significant value which would benefit any Christian educator. There are many solid evangelical systematic theology texts available, but few provide the application of theology seen in A Theology of Christian Education. It is important for the Christian educator to teach people how to connect orthodoxy and orthopraxy, which the authors do superbly.
They recognize the Glory of God as the central goal in Christian education. This forces an educator to evaluate all areas of ministry in light of God's standards and not their own preferences. Seeing education as holistically encompassing orthodoxy, orthopraxis and orthopatheia encourages balance in teaching.
Regarding curriculum selection, they evealuwated 5 approches. The final chapter interacts with the identity crises in Christian education. Four elements of identification are outlined as: theory, task, target and theology. Each area overlaps with the roles of the teacher as the: theorist, teacher, trainer and theologian. The paradigm seems to adequately capture the role of Christian education and the role of the teacher.
A Theology for Christian Education remains a superb book for educators in all age ranges and should help any evangelical minister of education.

The Marriage Builder ReviewThis book was a total blessing to me. The author argues that there are 3 ingredients to a healthy, godly marriage. Spirit oneness, Soul oneness and Body oneness. Note I am not saying happy. I think we are just so after happiness, that we forget the whole purpose behind marriage. Marriage is not to make me happy, but to make me holy! When I am transformed into an image of Christ that's where I am most happy to be. In His presence, the pleasures are forevermore. John 15:5 Apart from Christ I can do nothing! So there are 3 bulding blocks, Grace, Committment and Acceptance. If couples understood the grace of God and the biblical principles of marriage then the divorce rate in America wouldn't be so high. Must read for every couple umarried or married who want to please God and meet each other's needs. I reccomend it highly as I was able to put a lot of the book into practice in my own marriage and in my life !The Marriage Builder Overview

Organic Disciplemaking: Mentoring Others Into Spiritual Maturity And Leadership ReviewFor a number of years now I've been working on a practical how-to book on discipleship. Dennis McCallum has beaten me to the punch with Organic Disciple Making. He's written the most practical book on how to disciple people I've ever read.
Time and time again I find myself saying, "Yup, he nailed that one; that's how it works." For example, early on the book covers the subject of modeling and its key role in making disciples. Later it delves into the practical questions of how you counsel and disciple through various issues or how you deal with blocks in their development.
For example McCallum distinguishes the difference between weakness and resistance and the appropriate response of a disciple maker. A disciple struggling with weakness generally needs encouragement, whereas a disciple who is resistant often needs confrontation and possibly discipline.
I loved that the book had a whole section on coaching and I loved that its counsel is both biblically grounded and rooted in the everyday experience of someone who leads 250 home churches. I've read so many books on discipleship and few drill down to address the questions ordinary people have as they struggle to help their disciples grow.
All of us who have committed ourselves to following Jesus and representing his name need to learn how to make disciples. It was the last thing he asked us to do before leaving the earth. If you as a Jesus-follower feel like you need help in learning how to do this in a way that feels natural, do yourself a favor and get Organic Disciple Making.Organic Disciplemaking: Mentoring Others Into Spiritual Maturity And Leadership Overview

Irrational Man: A Study in Existential Philosophy ReviewIRRATIONAL MAN is a great read for anyone interested in existentialism. William Barrett does not bore, and he covers existentialism from its roots in Hebraism and Hellenism to its development by its most famous spokesman, Jean-Paul Sartre. For Barrett, existentialism is a personal and relevant matter, and he passionately reminds the reader that it is a philosophy for the modern age, an age of atomic weaponry. Though he has only four chapters on particular existentialists (Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Sartre), he also addresses various other figures such as St. Augustine, Descartes, Dostoevsky, and Tolstoy. The scope of this work is vast.
The aforementioned "existentialists" have disparate views, but all share the understanding that reason has its limits, that man is alone in the world, and that to live, one must face one's own finitude. Each thinker comes to their ideas from a unique point of view and Barrett connects their ideas with their personal historical context. What we have is a study that is coherent and enlightening, passionate and somehow urgent.
But perhaps it is a little too passionate, too grandiose. He has romantic notions of greatness, in art and in thought. Sometimes he seems too sure of his interpretations as well, but it is up to me to go to the original sources he writes about and try his findings against mine.
In the end, the very fact that I desire to read directly the works of the four existentialists he writes about shows to me that Barrett has done a fine job, and he has simultaneously clarified and deepened my understanding of existentialism beyond the famous line "existence precedes essence." As an introduction or a supplement, IRRATIONAL MAN is an essential, and entertaining, work.Irrational Man: A Study in Existential Philosophy Overview

The Gift of Infallibility: The Official Relatio on Infallibility of Bishop Vincent Ferrer Gasser at Vatican Council I ReviewThere is so much misunderstanding around the doctrine of infallibility. It is difficult to know what is an accurate description and what is not. However, in this wonderful piece of historical apologetic we have some of the original discussion and document concerning this doctrine along with a summary explanation. Many references from John Henry Newman to Pope John Paul the Great provide additional historical context. There are many apologetic books on the topic but this is the place to start any study. Without a clear definition that is true to the documents and discussions of Vatican I one would be building their understanding on a shaky foundation. This is the definitive place to start and well written and concise at the same time. The Gift of Infallibility: The Official Relatio on Infallibility of Bishop Vincent Ferrer Gasser at Vatican Council I Overview

The Interlinear Bible: Hebrew-Greek-English (English, Hebrew and Greek Edition) ReviewI pre-ordered the August 2005 Edition and I received it on August 1st. I am very pleased with this Interlinear Bible and it is an EXCELLENT reference book.
The print is small, but it is written on bright white paper, which makes it easier to read. The pages are also thicker than my other reference books. It is a very high quality book.
The Strong's numbers are very helpful in determining the true translation of a word, phrase, or verse. Just remember that you need to read the English translation of the Hebrew from right to left. There are two lines of English for every line of Hebrew. So you need to read the English translation switching from one line to another line, per word or phrase.
Anyone who is serious about studying the Word of God should, at minimum, have an Interlinear Bible, Hebrew-Greek-English, by Jay P. Green, and should also have The New Strong's Exhaustive Concordance Of The Bible, by James Strong. The Strong's Comfort Print Edition, ISBN: 0840720726, has a larger print that makes researching the Strong's numbers a lot easier. I "Highly Recommend" this Interlinear Bible.

Untamed: Reactivating a Missional Form of Discipleship (Shapevine) ReviewThere's a lot going for this book in terms of ideas and in trying to capture a missional form of discipleship. But it seems like a lot of effort is needed in sorting out the "chaff" from the "wheat". I did appreciate the efforts and intended applications of the book, overall though it's follow through seems a little off and it results in a mixed bag of ideas.
The foundational opening chapters of Hirsch's book I found good and thought provoking. But it's when they then develop from that truth, that things get a little subjective and disappointing. Untamed says that the focus of all faith and discipleship is found in the person of Jesus. How we relate to God and to each other must be from a Messianic viewpoint. They explain (very well in my opinion) that the trouble in the church is that there is too much subjectivity about Jesus, we remake Him in our own image. Therefore we must go back to a 'Biblical' definition of the nature of Christ to have a "true" picture. Hirsch uses the "Shema" (Hear Oh Israel) statement of Jesus' teaching for their foundational truth , i.e. You must love God with all you heart and you neighbor as yourself. So far so good. Then "untamed" goes on in the next chapters to relate that to becoming disciples and followers of this Jesus.
But rather then and go look at the "biblical" definitions of what Discipleship should too look like. The Hirsch's use their personal walk of faith as a methodology for working out the faith. Which is very subjective and reliant of their personal "church' experiences in Australia and elsewhere. But doesn't the New testament in it's background and teaching gives us a clear definitive pictures of what discipleship should look like already ? Otherwise what we can get, is a picture of the body of Christ as we came to faith and our personal preferences in it's style. Don't misunderstand what I'm saying, the expression of our faith can be according to our cultural and spiritual upbringing. There is no "accounting" for taste. But in the matter of living under the Messiah in His Kingdom, there's defined "life" boundaries and methods of evangelism. For example, prayer must be one of important foundations for discipleship growth. As Jesus not only "role modeled" praying, taught on the contents of a prayer life, but also gave commands to pray. Instead what we read in "Untamed" is a series of "straw men" arguments and discussions about Christian Community. What would have been better is a looking of what Biblical discipleship is defined as, what are the foundational important aspects to get right and then application of these to our fellowships and churches.
In the rest of the chapters then, I found I was reading a "how to" book of stories and personal value judgments of the Hirsch's. These, like all similar "how to " writings, can be are very hit and miss. Some good, some bland and some just deeply held opinions. Which is a pity, as it seems like the authors have the ability to define a brand of discipleship on a more biblical grounding. Whilst reading "Untamed" I also got the impression that they are trying to reinvent the " missional wheel " .A lot of what they write about was also explored in the early 1970's by the "Jesus" movement. Of wanting to relate the gospel to then hippie generation and "scene".
There were similarly many "Jesus Freaks' of the day who needed to be discipled and brought into the Faith. And it was through missional trial and sometimes cultural error; that they learned to build not on their on "subjective" prevailing sand, but on the eternal biblical Rock of ages.Untamed: Reactivating a Missional Form of Discipleship (Shapevine) Overview

Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words: With Topical Index ReviewThere are numerous Greek NT (New Testament) tools out there, but very few are helpful for lay believers who do not have the knowledge of the Greek. But Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary (VCED) is perfect for ALL believers. I have used it for 16 years thus far and still use it! Here are reasons for high recommendation:
1. You do NOT need Greek knowledge to use this book. It is that simple and arranged that way, using KJV of the Bible as the main text.
2. It explains KJV word in an original Greek in context. It provides the meaning of the word in a proper context of Greek background. For example: In English Bible, there is only one word for "love" but in NT Greek, there are four (two being used the mostly). Therefore VCED fills the gap between English Bible and Greek NT nicely and effectively.
3. It provides the definition of a word (KJV word) more accurately than the English dictionary because it uses Greek use of the word. For example: The word, "godliness (1Tim. 2:2)" in Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary is defined as "1: Divine 2: pious, devout -" but in VCED, it defines it as " 'to be devout,' denotes that piety which characterized by a Godward attitude, does that which is well-pleasing to Him." It provides fuller meaning of the word by explaining how the word is used in the NT.
4. It can be used with Strong's Exhaustive Concordance. Every word is numbered with Strong's number so you can use it more efficiently.
5. This edition includes OT Dictionary as well. Although not written by Vine himself, it still is helpful, but is not as complete as Vine's NT.
6. This edition is clear in typeset (modernized). Previous editions were bad to read because of its old typeset.
Some Tips:
(a) If you want to use this book, you must have KJV of the Bible alongside VCED. All entries are given in KJV word.
(b) To save a step, you might want to consider using, "The New Enlgishman's Greek Concordance and Lexicon (Hendrickson Publisher)." It is also coded with Strong's number and uses KJV renderings of the verse.
All in all, it is an excellent tool for Bible Study. I heartily recommend it to all believers.Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words: With Topical Index Overview

Catholic Bible Dictionary ReviewAlthough I have only been Catholic for 6 years, for over 40 years I have been a Bible student and teacher with literally thousands of books and I do know good resource books. Catholic Bible Dictionary is a great Catholic Dictionary! I trust everything Dr. Scott Hahn has published because I know anyone seeking truth is safe under the teaching of this well-known writer and scholar; the information has been researched historically, as well as having used the Sacred Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
I had been on the wait list for the Catholic Bible Dictionary and was anxious for it to arrive. The Dictionary was a long time coming but I knew it would be worth the waiting. I was right! Today the Catholic Bible Dictionary arrived. I dropped everything I was holding, ran for a knife and opened the box! I fell in love with the cover which is a picture of the center section of the painting The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by Jan and Hubert Van Eyck. (Saint Bavo Cathedral of Ghent.) The painting is glorious! And, that is even before I opened the book! Next I opened the book and the first thing I saw was the Imprimatur . . . that is a good thing. Converts really like that.
And then, I love the fonts. It is large print and you know immediately that everything is important. Sections are divided so that you will see where you have been and where you are going! In a dictionary? How unusual is that! And that is just at first glance! You see a list of the Church Fathers . . . this is just the beginning! I have hardly had time to look at everything but I have read some of the introductions of different Books of the Bible and they are perfect; each book of the Bible is identified. There is a history of the versions of the Bible! There are complete definitions for topics not covered in great detail in other dictionaries, i.e., Covenant, Liturgy, Interpretation of the Bible. On the cover there is a notation that there are "over five thousand entries as well as the latest up-to-date information on every important item, name, place, and event in Sacred Scripture."
Catholic Bible Dictionary is an academically solid CATHOLIC dictionary, with many superb references and very easy to read. I have already gifted this beautiful book to five friends and would not hesitate giving this to a Protestant. We will all find Truths we need to know in this new resource book. I will be back and edit this review after I use the book more, however, since people are going to want to know what people are saying about the Catholic Bible Dictionary, I wanted to get this on Amazon.
What do I say? I say one thing - "Buy it! You can't be disappointed."Catholic Bible Dictionary Overview

The Penguin Dictionary of Symbols (Dictionary, Penguin) ReviewThis is a thinker's dictionary, not a guide to road signs and icons. The editors took the trouble to recruit symbol experts from many different professions, ranging from the paranormal to the skeptical academic. The result is a dictionary with entries that have more depth than the usual "quick hits" that other symbolism dictionaries give you. Chevalier is not afraid to give contradictory or contrasting meanings of icons. (He is not a universalist, but a relativist.) He is usually careful to identify the culture in which a particular meaning is given. I keep this in easy reach on my bookshelf, reminding myself, however, that no dictionary on this subject can possibly cover all the meanings a symbol may have. It is worth having around. The Penguin Dictionary of Symbols (Dictionary, Penguin) Overview
