History, scientific analysis, a survey and the ability to hold it all together blend to enable the reader to get a glimpse of a sustainable future. This book is like a good play, the intriguing teaser front end, the slogging thru volumes of information, the wondering if you should walk out during the intermission because of TMI (too much information), and the roller coaster ride you get once the story tips into the final run to the climax.
The authors begin to see patterns flowing from their survey that reach way beyond their initial hopes and they are able to gather this information, combine it with historical and scientific data, and pitch a proactive and beautifully simple way of beginning to transform our understanding of ourselves so that we may engage meaningful challenges and new ways of reflectionThe Meaning of Things: Domestic Symbols and the Self Overview

The Penguin Dictionary of Symbols (Dictionary, Penguin) ReviewThis is a thinker's dictionary, not a guide to road signs and icons. The editors took the trouble to recruit symbol experts from many different professions, ranging from the paranormal to the skeptical academic. The result is a dictionary with entries that have more depth than the usual "quick hits" that other symbolism dictionaries give you. Chevalier is not afraid to give contradictory or contrasting meanings of icons. (He is not a universalist, but a relativist.) He is usually careful to identify the culture in which a particular meaning is given. I keep this in easy reach on my bookshelf, reminding myself, however, that no dictionary on this subject can possibly cover all the meanings a symbol may have. Dream Dictionary : An A to Z Guide to Understanding Your Unconscious Mind ReviewIf this book popped up on your recommendation list next to a few others about dream interpretation, and you're only going to buy one..pick this one. Tony Crisp's "Dream Dictionary" is by far the most enlightening book on this subject that I have. If the subject interests you, it's fun to have a few different books by different authors to cross reference. But again, if you're only going to get one book on dreams, chose this one over any other. I found Crisp to have a much more realistic look into the subconcious than, say, Gustavus Miller ("The Dictionary of Dreams..") who seemed to have only three standard explanations of dreams... Elsevier's Dictionary of Symbols and Imagery: In English (With Definitions) ReviewA dictionary of imagery as given by Ad de Vries gives the reader an entrance into often difficult symbols and the connections between them. The book leaves the reader a lot of room to distill his or her specific meaning (from allegories, metaphors, signs, types, psychology, myth etc.) from the sought after symbol. For that reason several meanings are given that may apply simultaneously (or in interconnection with each other) giving the user the necessary space for a very personal interpretation. The dictionary thus recognizes the fact that, when intuitively used, the meaning of one image can often lead to a deeper source which the lay person would not easily have distinguished. The book does have a possible drawback in that the material chosen from has been restricted to "Western" civilisation.
