Holman Bible Atlas: A Complete Guide to the Expansive Geography of Biblical History (Broadman & Holman Reference) ReviewThe Holman Bible Atlas: A Complete Guide to the Expansive Geography of Biblical History is worthy of reading in its own right. It is a beautiful and super-informative volume. It is an invaluable tool for using while studying the Bible. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
The Atlas is laid out in chronological order. It begins taking a general look at the geography of the ancient Near East. It ends with the expansion of Christianity up to 300 AD. In between these two time periods, the Atlas follows the sweep of the geographical history of the Israelites and the early Christians.
Every Chapter is filled with beautiful pictures, informative charts and lists, and excellent maps. I found especially useful the cutaway topographical maps such as the one used to vividly show the course of Joshua's military campaigns.
As great as the maps and pictures are...this atlas has a lot more to offer. Each chapter analyzes the economic, cultural and religious practices common in the time periods being discussed. Side bar articles discuss some of these issues in an in-depth manner.
In this atlas I found clear, visual explanations of several Biblical topics that had previously been nebulous at best in my mind. The chart on page twenty-eight alone is worth the price of the book. It is the first chart I have ever seen that clearly explains the relation between the Solar Months, the Hebrew Names of Lunar Months, the Feasts and Rainfalls, the Agricultural Activities and Pastoral Activities in ancient Israel.
Another great feature of this atlas that I have found useful is the bibliography for studying the topics presented here in greater depth...now I have more books to read!

The New Unger's Bible Dictionary ReviewThis is one of several available Bible dictionaries. I prefer it because it is up to date, comprehensive for a one-volume reference, and has some fine color and bw illustrations. Fifteen color Bible maps with indexes are included as an appendix. Catholic Bible Dictionary ReviewAlthough I have only been Catholic for 6 years, for over 40 years I have been a Bible student and teacher with literally thousands of books and I do know good resource books. Catholic Bible Dictionary is a great Catholic Dictionary! I trust everything Dr. Scott Hahn has published because I know anyone seeking truth is safe under the teaching of this well-known writer and scholar; the information has been researched historically, as well as having used the Sacred Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
I had been on the wait list for the Catholic Bible Dictionary and was anxious for it to arrive. The Dictionary was a long time coming but I knew it would be worth the waiting. I was right! Today the Catholic Bible Dictionary arrived. I dropped everything I was holding, ran for a knife and opened the box! I fell in love with the cover which is a picture of the center section of the painting The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by Jan and Hubert Van Eyck. (Saint Bavo Cathedral of Ghent.) The painting is glorious! And, that is even before I opened the book! Next I opened the book and the first thing I saw was the Imprimatur . . . that is a good thing. Converts really like that.
And then, I love the fonts. It is large print and you know immediately that everything is important. Sections are divided so that you will see where you have been and where you are going! In a dictionary? How unusual is that! And that is just at first glance! You see a list of the Church Fathers . . . this is just the beginning! I have hardly had time to look at everything but I have read some of the introductions of different Books of the Bible and they are perfect; each book of the Bible is identified. There is a history of the versions of the Bible! There are complete definitions for topics not covered in great detail in other dictionaries, i.e., Covenant, Liturgy, Interpretation of the Bible. On the cover there is a notation that there are "over five thousand entries as well as the latest up-to-date information on every important item, name, place, and event in Sacred Scripture."
Catholic Bible Dictionary is an academically solid CATHOLIC dictionary, with many superb references and very easy to read. I have already gifted this beautiful book to five friends and would not hesitate giving this to a Protestant. We will all find Truths we need to know in this new resource book. I will be back and edit this review after I use the book more, however, since people are going to want to know what people are saying about the Catholic Bible Dictionary, I wanted to get this on Amazon.

Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary ReviewThis is probably the best new bible dictionary to come along in some time. It contains over 700 full-color photos, illustrations, charts, and maps. And these are not just "eye-candy," they are meaty and well thought-out. For example, under the topic of "Revelation" there is a 5-page chart which summarizes how each of the major interpretive views (amill, historic pre-mill, pretrib premill, preterist, postmill) understands each major point of interpretation or passage (e.g., seven heads of Rev 13, Beast, bride of Christ, etc.). The maps are beautifully done and the text is conservative and information-dense. This is not your typical fluff published to make a fast buck. The topics covered are extremely comprehensive. This may be the best single-volume Bible Dictionary I've seen to date. The only slighly negative observation I could make is the size of the work (over 1700 pages) is a bit large for a single volume and the binding could probably be better. (I haven't had a problem yet, but I can tell that I need to handle it carefully due to its size and weight.)Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary Overview

Dictionary of New Testament Background (The IVP Bible Dictionary Series) ReviewThe importance of a work such as this one cannot be stressed enough. In order to truly understand the New Testament, one must understand the world into which it was born. The Dictionary of New Testament Background gives the reader a comprehensive survey of the historical, social, religious, and literary context of the New Testament documents in a single volume.
Like the three previous dictionaries in the IVP series (Jesus, Paul, Later NT), this one is arranged alphabetically by topic, with plenty of cross-references. Most articles are 1,000 to 7,500 words in length, although a few contain 10,000+ words. In addition, each article is supplemented with a bibliography to guide the reader into a fuller treatment of a given topic.
The scholars who worked on this project are first-rate, most of them having published extensively in their field. Students of the New Testament will undoubtedly recognize the names of many of the contributors. The editors, to their credit, also drew from scholars in other disciplines such as archaeology, history, and classics, therefore ensuring the high quality of scholarship that the reader finds in this work.
The amount of information contained in this one is tremendous, but not overwhelming, and always relevant. It is also clearly written and up-to-date. All students, from the beginner to the scholar, will find this dictionary to be a useful resource in New Testament study. There is nothing negative that I can say about it. Easton's Bible Dictionary for Kindle (instant definition lookup while reading any Bible) (Updated) ReviewThis is an amazing product, and for the price it simply cannot be beat.
This is a Kindle dictionary that, if set as your primary dictionary in the menu, will allow you to get instant definitions and entries for any word in any Bible. It will work with all modern translations, and most historical ones, the exception being the Douay-Rheims. The Douay has some spellings for names and places based on the Latin translation done by Jerome in the 4th century. For instance, in the Douay "Noah" is spelled "Noe" and that will simply confuse any Bible dictionary. This really isn't a drawback, it is just a fact of old-English language translations and various spellings for words.
Theologically I have some quibbles with this dictionary. This is definitely an evangelical-protestant dictionary, and sometimes when using it I have noticed that the dictionary clearly displays bias on issues such as justification etc. I really don't have a problem with this (I would not expect a believer in any tradition to compromise their beliefs) but I think the dictionary should identify itself as being evangelical/protestant somewhere in the marketing section so buyers know what they are getting.
Still, even with these quibbles, which from a traditional Catholic customer would be unavoidable, this is an EXCELLENT product for the Kindle. I am amazed at how well and seamlessly this dictionary works with the Kindle. There are no formatting issues; no issues with how to look up words. It is simply flawless in this regard. In terms of formatting it blows away the much more expensive Catholic Bible Dictionaryby Scott Hahn which is both abysmally formatted and overly expensive. The hard cover edition of Hahn's dictionary however is excellent and a great place for anyone interested in Catholic exegesis to get information.
The Easton Bible Dictionary is an excellent offering; it combines seamless integration with the Kindle, outstanding quality of most entries, and a very affordable price.
