Scholastic Children's Dictionary (Revised and Updated Edition) ReviewI rate this a 5 star for the purpose I purchased it. It introduced my grandson, as a 3rd grader with homework, to the use of a dictionary. I was astounded to realize that he had been reading his social studies with only partial understanding because of skipping over words that had no meaning for him ... words we take for granted with which a child has had little or no experience. I taught him the blessing of a dictionary and we started going over his work. His eyes lit up as his brain lit up with understanding. His grades went up .. a matter of great pride to him. Just learning to work the filing system of a dictionary quickly is another accomplishment for a 3rd or 4th grader. They can graduate to a more adult dictionary later on with confidence and grace. Webster's New World Children's Dictionary ReviewI reviewed all the Children's Dictionaries I could find before selecting this one. It is a beautiful book. Word definitions are clear and easy to understand. Illustrations are colorful and plentiful. Supplementary information is useful and presented in an interesting format. This is one dictionary that is fun just to sit down and read! The CD ROM is also marvelous. My child loves playing the educational word games on it and so do it. There are several varieties of games and different levels of difficulty. The only drawback here is that the CD ROM cannot be used on Mac computers.Webster's New World Children's Dictionary Overview

Merriam-Webster Children's Dictionary ReviewComprehensive, well illustrated, and written to be understood by children aged 9 - 12. The definitions of most words searched have been easily understood by my nine year old son. Some definitions have necessitated my participation to provide a more simplified explanation. A further noted weakness of the dictionary is that a significant number of words fail to provide an example of its use in a sentence. A more consistent usage of this feature would have resulted in a 5 star rating. These faults, however, are minor and should not deter the reader from purchasing this dictionary. Some noteworthy unexpected strengths of the dictionary was the inclusion of a reference section containing maps of the world and seven continents, illustrations of the flags of the world, a list of the 50 states and their capitals, and a listing of the Presidents and Vice-Presidents of the United States. (It may, however, not be a topic of great interest to youngsters, but give it to anyone over 21 and it should find a huge audience.) The author thinks of everything including losing the memories you had when you were older, as you continue to grow younger. Can anyone stop this "unaging" process and what will happen when the protagonists are back to diapers? A fascinating idea, a very easy read and one that will surely make a great motion picture!
