Little Gorilla Lap Board Book ReviewThis is a wonderful story about the reassurance of being loved that appeals to toddlers and young children. I especially like this "lap size" version of the board book because it allows the child to really delight in the colorful, warm, and witty pictures and captures expressions and personalities of the animals. The ending is endearing and children will love it.Little Gorilla Lap Board Book Overview

Scholastic Children's Dictionary (Revised and Updated Edition) ReviewI rate this a 5 star for the purpose I purchased it. It introduced my grandson, as a 3rd grader with homework, to the use of a dictionary. I was astounded to realize that he had been reading his social studies with only partial understanding because of skipping over words that had no meaning for him ... words we take for granted with which a child has had little or no experience. I taught him the blessing of a dictionary and we started going over his work. His eyes lit up as his brain lit up with understanding. His grades went up .. a matter of great pride to him. Just learning to work the filing system of a dictionary quickly is another accomplishment for a 3rd or 4th grader. They can graduate to a more adult dictionary later on with confidence and grace. This one is a wonderful beginning.Scholastic Children's Dictionary (Revised and Updated Edition) Overview

Cookies: Bite-Size Life Lessons ReviewThis is such a wonderful book. I was attracted to Jane Dyer's lovely illustrations and fell in love with the story. By using chocolate chip cookies, Rosenthal explains such things as envy, greed, cooperation, kindness, etc in a manner that helps children understand and gives adults a reason to smile. Today is my daughter's 6th birthday. Rather than take in treats that would be forgotten quickly, she gave her kindergarten teacher and class a copy of this book as a present. The teacher (and class) loved it. This book would be a wonderful present for a young child (say kindergarten to first grade) and a welcome addition to any libary. I cannot recommend it enough.Cookies: Bite-Size Life Lessons Overview

Geography from A to Z: A Picture Glossary (Trophy Picture Books) ReviewThis book is really well done. Though it is targeted for children, this 40-plus year old found it very informative. After searching through the adult catalog at the local library for a book that would explain landforms and earth features and finding nothing, I found this book in the young people's collection. It was a Godsend. I found it so useful, that I am now purchasing it for my personal library.
If you, like me, have never been clear in your own mind about the difference between a hill and a mountain; a mesa and a butte; a brook, creek, or stream; a river, lake or pond; a sea and an ocean; a canyon and a gorge, and on and on, then this book will painlessly de-mystify these terms for you and many more.
Thanks to the authors and publishers of this fine book, I am less dumbfounded by my physical surroundings, and at least know now what I probably should have learned in grade schoolGeography from A to Z: A Picture Glossary (Trophy Picture Books) Overview

Fancy Nancy's Favorite Fancy Words: From Accessories to Zany ReviewThis book is really cute, as are all of the Fancy Nancy books. There is one word for each letter of the alphabet - one letter (word) per page - each word is beautifully illustrated. The book is smaller than the regular Fancy Nancy books, it's a little smaller than a sheet of notebook paper.
The words are the usual "fancy" words that Nancy uses. As for learning, I would recommend this for younger (3yr - 6yr) children. For enjoyment -the illustrations are my favorite - this book is great for all ages =)Fancy Nancy's Favorite Fancy Words: From Accessories to Zany Overview

Webster's New World Children's Dictionary ReviewI reviewed all the Children's Dictionaries I could find before selecting this one. It is a beautiful book. Word definitions are clear and easy to understand. Illustrations are colorful and plentiful. Supplementary information is useful and presented in an interesting format. This is one dictionary that is fun just to sit down and read! The CD ROM is also marvelous. My child loves playing the educational word games on it and so do it. There are several varieties of games and different levels of difficulty. The only drawback here is that the CD ROM cannot be used on Mac computers.Webster's New World Children's Dictionary Overview

Janice VanCleave's Food and Nutrition for Every Kid: Easy Activities That Make Learning Science Fun (Science for Every Kid Series) ReviewWe have been using this book with Sonlight Curriculum this year. My children range in age from 6 to 12 years old. The book at times is too difficult for the 6 year old and too easy for the 12 year old, but in general it has been very useful. The chapters are short and difficult concepts are clearly explained. My children are alwys excited to get to the activity section of each chapter, but are disappointed about half the time. The 'activities' usually always work, but they are not always very fun or interesting.Janice VanCleave's Food and Nutrition for Every Kid: Easy Activities That Make Learning Science Fun (Science for Every Kid Series) Overview
