Little Gorilla Lap Board Book ReviewThis is a wonderful story about the reassurance of being loved that appeals to toddlers and young children. I especially like this "lap size" version of the board book because it allows the child to really delight in the colorful, warm, and witty pictures and captures expressions and personalities of the animals. The ending is endearing and children will love it.Little Gorilla Lap Board Book Overview

The Meaning of Wife: A Provocative Look at Women and Marriage in the Twenty-first Century ReviewAs a newly-wed, always independent female, my first year of marriage has met confusion over new roles, career goals and what my new title of "wife" really implied. I turned somewhat to rebellion - as did my husband in his new title, with all it's implications of "breadwinner" - I do not want the traditional house wife role. I never played that role in the five years we lived together prior to the wedding ring and all of a sudden that ring, which is supposed to represent the unity and fairytale love we are bombarded with daily, became what I had always thought of as a ridiculous metaphor for marriage: a ball and chain. I felt trapped.

The reason I am writing this now, is not because I had some self-awakening and suddenly came into my own as a wifely figure. I did not follow my wild daydream of suddenly, and with no real plan, driving into the sunset toward "liberty." I did not go file for divorce, which is the popular and easy thing to do. I simply read a book. "The Meaning of Wife," by Anne Kingston, is an eye-opening page turner, which confronts social patterns, ideologies, and generalizations of what it means to not only be a wife, but a woman in Western Society.

While reading this book, I was forced to confront some of my own pre-conceived notions of what it means to be a wife, mother, career woman, domestic, caretaker, [...]. It also helped me to realize that in some of my ideals I have been unfair to the person I chose to make my partner for life, and vice versa.

I am amazed by Kingston's ability to present different perspectives and surprised by her ability to resolve many issues. She does not represent a feminist hard-line but takes a logical stance that does not slap either sex across the face with shame. She was able to show all sides of a debate in each chapter, and then resolved with solutions that make the reader think, "Now why didn't I think of that. It is so simple, so obvious."

I strongly believe that this book is not only a read for women, but men as well. As I said before, it is not a feminist manuscript meant to belittle men, but a bold confrontation of the roles assigned both sexes in Western Society. It focuses on the role of the wife, but in doing so, confronts the roles of the Husband.

Believe it or not the only feminist book I have read in my life is, "Communion," by Bell Hooks. This was a book I loved but had contradicting feelings about. It makes grand points of what it means to "Commune" with another, but showed little resolve toward such communion. One of my favorite quotes came from this book, "To exist in a state of communion is to be aware of the nature of existence." (Susan Griffin) However, it was not until reading, "The Meaning of Wife," that I truly began to confront and make peace with my existence as a female and all the roles I play as an individual and as a partner in a communion I chose.

Breaktime (Dance Sequence 1-2) ReviewDitto and Morgan are two English seventeen-year-old high school students doing their A levels. According to Morgan literature is a load of garbage, useless, a lie, having nothing to do with life. It obeys rules and is ordered in a way that life never does. Ditto sees things very differently. He likes studying English Literature and is inspired by his teacher Midge. But how can he get across to Morgan the enthusiasm he feels for fiction? In an inspired moment Ditto sets out to write his own piece of literature that will answer Morgan's criticisms. So Ditto begins to write an account of the events that happen to him during the half-term holiday break, and this book is the end result of his efforts.
On one level this book is simply a record of an unusually turbulent week in the life of an ordinary person. On another level it is a coming of age story about a young man who leaves his childhood behind and experiences the first expressions of adult sexuality. Psychologically this is the story of a youth's growing separation from his father. Then again this is the story of someone trapped in thoughts and words, the endless commentary of the mind. There is a lot in this book to think about and it strikes me that this is just what life is like: complex, with no easy answers or pat resolutions.
This book is also complex stylistically. Following the example of modernists like James Joyce and T.S. Elliott Ditto sets out to stretch and break the 'rules' of literature. Sometimes the text is written in the third-person; sometimes it is in first-person. Sometimes the narrative contains considerable description and comment, and sometimes there is no narration at all, but just named report of dialogue as in the text of a play. Sometimes the commentary comes almost as scientific observation listed under italicized headings. Ditto writes:
"Nature of bus experience: consoling, comforting, contenting. Vehicle warm. Motion tranquillizing. ...[etc.]"
Sometimes quotes from other texts are given, such as from travel guides, relevant pieces of fiction and poetry. Sometimes illustrations are used rather than just words. Sometimes parallel thoughts and commentary is given in alternate lines down the page. This is a very adventurously written 'novel' and always we are faced with the question: "Where is the truth in all of this?" This modernist writing style is a little hard to get used to and understand at first, especially the very long sentences representing the 'stream of consciousness', the gabble of Ditto's mind. But with a little perseverance this is a very enjoyable book.
This is a quit short novel and when I came to the end I wished there was more of it. Chambers manages to make us like and care about Ditto, and want to know more about him. He has created a well-humored book that surprises us and entertains us, but which also makes us think. This book would do excellently for a high school paper: it contains so much in so few pages.
This is the first in the "Dance Sequence", a set of stand-alone novels, which inter-relate thematically, but which are unconnected in story line and characters.Breaktime (Dance Sequence 1-2) Overview

Strong Families Successful Students: helping teenagers reach their full academic potential ReviewI like Dr. Gavazzi's sense of humor to help parent teens of the new decade. He presents simple explanations for successful family communication, rules, and internal/external boundaries in relation to teens along with looking at the current life stages of family members. His book reflects the latest research for creating strong families and helping teens become academically successful. It's very concise and easy to understand along with step-by-step lessons and worksheets. This book is excellent for the motivated parent that wants to help their teen. As a school guidance counselor working with teens, I will keep a copy on my resource shelf to recommend to parents.Strong Families Successful Students: helping teenagers reach their full academic potential Overview

Emotional Blackmail: When the People in Your Life Use Fear, Obligation, and Guilt to Manipulate You ReviewI am an emotional blackmailer, I just had no idea until I read this book. It was suggested to me by my soon to be ex- husband who couldn't take it anymore. I thought I was being strong and standing my ground and this book helped me to see that I was emotionally bullying other people. I beleived I was always right and no human being can be. It also helped me to see that it doesn't matter if you are wrong or right, making another person feel as if they must agree with you or they are "bad" is not OK. I was using the behaviors descibed in the book to protect myself from being hurt and have hurt sooooo many others in the process. If you're a person who always feels like a victim or have no idea why so many people don't like you when you think you're such a wonderful person READ IT!!!Emotional Blackmail: When the People in Your Life Use Fear, Obligation, and Guilt to Manipulate You Overview

Toxic Parents: Overcoming Their Hurtful Legacy and Reclaiming Your Life ReviewAfter reading the one-star review by the reader from NY on March 14, 2000, I had to respond. It seems to me this person is awfully defensive and, I suspect, is guilty of some of the behavior that is described as abusive in the book...
No parent is perfect. We all know that. This book is not about demonizing parents. It is about learning to recognize incidents in our lives that adversely affect our behavior and our emotional well-being. I bought this book because of problems my husband and I were having with his parents. Since he was a child, he had been put into a role of emotional partner to his mother. When he decided to start doing some things on his own, she got very upset and started pouring on the guilt. I arrived on the scene at about the same time and became a convenient scapegoat, accused of manipulating him and stealing him away from them. Unfortunately (before I found this book and other helpful ones) things got really bad, and now we have virtually no relationship with my in-laws. It's a very sad situation. However, my husband and I now recognize the games for what they are and no longer buy into the idea that it's our fault for "upsetting" them so much that they just can't be around us. (If I hadn't experienced it myself, I wouldn't have believed that adults could behave in such an irrational manner! ) Reading books like this one and speaking with counselors has provided us with useful insights that will help us interact with them in a healthy manner, if we ever get the chance again.
If you're going through this too, you are NOT alone! Get this book and read it. It helps you recognize behaviors that are harmful to you. It helps you learn to overcome problems in the past and avoid inappropriate treatment in the future. I also recommend the book "The Adult Child's Guide to What's Normal" by John C. Friel and Linda Friel for anyone who found this book helpful. It's not as detailed, but it gives a lot of information in a very easy-to-read format. If you're being manipulated by your parent(s), I recommend "Emotional Blackmail," also by Susan Forward. If you were put into an inappropriate role by your parents, I strongly suggest "Emotional Incest Syndrome" by Patricia Love and Jo Robinson. The title is disturbing but the information is excellent!Toxic Parents: Overcoming Their Hurtful Legacy and Reclaiming Your Life Overview

I Grew Up in Southwestern Pennsylvania Cookbook ReviewI purchased this cookbook because it was mentioned in an article on City Chicken in the Pgh Post Gazzette food section. I was hoping that the book would provide stories along with the regional recipes and I was not disappointed. I plan on giving the books as Christmas gifts to out-of-town relatives and friends so that they can relive their days growing up in Pittsburgh.I Grew Up in Southwestern Pennsylvania Cookbook OverviewThis is more than a cookbook, it is also a stroll back into the childhood of those of us who grew up in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The book is full of facts, writings and photos of Southwestern Pennsylvania with over 200 recipes collected over years of time. The beauty of the rolling hills and meadows, the smells captured in a warm breeze on a spring day and the taste of a homegrown tomato sandwiched in between two pieces of Grandma's homemade bread can take you back to a moment in time that you would've otherwise forgotten. The sights, sounds and smells bid you come and they never fail to remind you that you grew up in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Flightsend (Definitions) ReviewCharlie's mother, Kathy, decides to move to the countryside in a place called Flightsend. Flightsend is a way for Kathy to get away from her old life. Ever since Kathy gave birth to a stillborn, she has not been the same. Her daughter would have been named Rose. As a result, Kathy quits her job and dumps her boyfriend. Charlie does not see how moving to Flightsend will help anything, especially herself. Now, Charlie will be far from all of her friends. However, soon after moving, Charlie lands a job waitressing at Nightingales and realizes she may be wrong about Flightsend.
I did not enjoy Flightsend. None of the characters held my attention. They were all kind of boring. The plot was not much better than the characters. Most of Flightsend deals with Kathy's midlife crisis and how it all affects Charlie. I almost felt as if Flightsend dealt too much with Kathy's problems. At times, I felt that this novel should not be labeled YA. This is especially bad considering that the novel is in Charlie's point of view. My next dislike is completely subjective. I really did not like the font that Flightsend is printed in. The font is 12 pt. New Baskerville. This is the first time that a font has really bothered me in a novel, and I really think I would have enjoyed Flightsend slightly more if it was printed in another font. :/
On a more positive note, there was one thing that I enjoyed about Flightsend. While the things I dislike outweigh the thing I like, I think it is still worth mentioning. Flightsend takes place in England, and I did enjoy reading the English dialect. There were probably a few other small things that I liked about Flightsend, but I can't remember them at the moment. Come to think of it though, if I can't remember the things, then I must not have liked them too much...Flightsend (Definitions) Overview
