The Fussy Baby Book : Parenting Your High-Need Child From Birth to Age Five ReviewOur daughter was THE "poster child" for colicky, fussy babies. She had colic so severe [crying 10-12 hours a DAY for first 12 weeks!] that our Pediatrician told us "This isn't colic, she just has a bad disposition." [UGH - we don't use him any more needless to say - and the crying stopped abruptly at 12 weeks]. After the colic passed, she continued to be a VERY "hands on, high need" baby. She was quite a challenge to parent that first year.
Thank goodness I found this book! I can still remember the first time I read it - the sigh of relief that I wasn't alone and the wonder at all the great ideas and suggestions in the book. We put these suggestions to work in our parenting and followed Dr. Sears' advice to the letter. Now we have an angelic two year old - she's a joy to be around. She is now the easiest kid in the world to parent - the most easy going, friendly, and sweet kid you could imagine. Now my friends all say how lucky I am to have such an easy toddler! I think it is due in great part to Dr. William and Martha Sears and their wonderful insight and advice - their suggestions certainly worked for us!The Fussy Baby Book : Parenting Your High-Need Child From Birth to Age Five Overview

The Emotional Incest Syndrome: What to do When a Parent's Love Rules Your Life ReviewIt can be extremely emotionally validating to realize some things you experienced as a child were unhealthy, especially if they get in the way of happy, productive relationships later in life. This book is about recognizing unhealthy, enmeshed relationships and learning how to move toward something more healthy. It teaches you how to do the work necessary to make things better for yourself. You won't change the parent who put you in an emotionally incestuous situation so don't waste your energy on an effort that's guaranteed to fail. Instead focus on learning new ways to respond to the unhealthy behaviors of your parents. This will enable you to recognize and change your own unhealthy behaviors, which is especially important if you are a parent who wants to end the cycle of emotionally-damaging parent/child relationships.
This book helps to identify, understand, and overcome many prior experiences that have been holding you back. It describes perfectly the relationship my husband had with his mother, his inability to pull away for so long, and the reaction of his family when he finally tried to gain a healthy distance from her. Recognizing this behavior and learning to deal with it was an emotional life saver for me. If I could give this book 10 stars, I would! The Emotional Incest Syndrome: What to do When a Parent's Love Rules Your Life Overview

Love Is a Choice: The Definitive Book on Letting Go of Unhealthy Relationships ReviewI found the information in this book very helpful. It is easy to read and understand. It is encouraging. It provides insight into what's going on when you're trying to cast off old ways of living that hold you back.
This book is worth reading, not only for the information to help you grow personally, but to be more aware and understanding of others in your life.
Although the authors may be religious, this does not come across heavily in the book and would not complicate a non-religious person using the information and insights to change things they don't like.Love Is a Choice: The Definitive Book on Letting Go of Unhealthy Relationships Overview

Strong Families Successful Students: helping teenagers reach their full academic potential ReviewI like Dr. Gavazzi's sense of humor to help parent teens of the new decade. He presents simple explanations for successful family communication, rules, and internal/external boundaries in relation to teens along with looking at the current life stages of family members. His book reflects the latest research for creating strong families and helping teens become academically successful. It's very concise and easy to understand along with step-by-step lessons and worksheets. This book is excellent for the motivated parent that wants to help their teen. As a school guidance counselor working with teens, I will keep a copy on my resource shelf to recommend to parents.Strong Families Successful Students: helping teenagers reach their full academic potential Overview

Facing Codependence: What It Is, Where It Comes from, How It Sabotages Our Lives ReviewSome things said simply are more powerful thanks to their simplicity. This book provides a forceful, unflinching description of how people who are raised in a dysfunctional or abusive environment often sabotage and cripple their lives. The structure of the book is straightforward. The situations Mellody discusses are often sound sadly ordinary rather than extraordinary. But the resulting emotional resonance of this book is undeniable.
Mellody methodically dissects the disorder she calls codependency. She first explains how when working with addicted individuals as a nurse in a recovery center in Arizona she saw a repeated pattern of dysfunctional behavior in individuals and their families that went beyond the addictions for which the individuals were being treated. Her work there and her own personal development led to the conclusions in this book. (One of the wonderful aspects of the book is that when Mellody talks about codependents and their behavior) she does not speak condescendingly about "those codependents", but rather uses examples that begin with "I" or "us." This creates a powerful intimacy.
There are four main sections to the book. The first section details what she sees as the core symptoms of codependency: difficulty experiencing appropriate levels of self-esteem, difficulty setting functional boundaries, difficulty owning and expressing one's own reality, difficulty taking care of one's adult needs and wants, and difficulty behaving moderately. The second section details how dysfunctional family can push a child (whom Mellody describes as inherently valuable, vulnerable, imperfect, dependent, and immature) into codependency. The third section describes the many kinds of abuse (most of which are not obviously traumatizing on first review) that can push an individual, particularly a child toward codependency. And the last section provides a very preliminary road map to healing codependency: the first step she argues is an awareness of one's codependent state, and second step is a desire to change.
The book addresses well struggles that are an issue for many/most people. It touches on feelings that make books like "The Prince of Tides" and Alice Miller's "The Drama of the Gifted Child" resonant for so many. Here the presentation of more clinical, but not necessarily any less moving. I have two main complaints with the book. First, I don't think the term "codependent" does justice to the broad variety of symptoms that Mellody covers. In fact, I think the title of book alone might dissuade people who otherwise benefit from reading the book. I don't have a wonderful alternative, but I think a title like "Facing Dysfunctional Behavior" or "Facing Self-sabotaging Behavior" would be more accurate. Second, as in many of the twelve-step programs, Mellody consider a "Higher Power" an element in addressing codependent behavior. In reading the book I saw no reason to bring in this concept, and doing so might limit the applicability of these insight to those who are so predisposed. A good, and surprisingly powerful, little powerful book.Facing Codependence: What It Is, Where It Comes from, How It Sabotages Our Lives Overview

Toxic Parents: Overcoming Their Hurtful Legacy and Reclaiming Your Life ReviewAfter reading the one-star review by the reader from NY on March 14, 2000, I had to respond. It seems to me this person is awfully defensive and, I suspect, is guilty of some of the behavior that is described as abusive in the book...
No parent is perfect. We all know that. This book is not about demonizing parents. It is about learning to recognize incidents in our lives that adversely affect our behavior and our emotional well-being. I bought this book because of problems my husband and I were having with his parents. Since he was a child, he had been put into a role of emotional partner to his mother. When he decided to start doing some things on his own, she got very upset and started pouring on the guilt. I arrived on the scene at about the same time and became a convenient scapegoat, accused of manipulating him and stealing him away from them. Unfortunately (before I found this book and other helpful ones) things got really bad, and now we have virtually no relationship with my in-laws. It's a very sad situation. However, my husband and I now recognize the games for what they are and no longer buy into the idea that it's our fault for "upsetting" them so much that they just can't be around us. (If I hadn't experienced it myself, I wouldn't have believed that adults could behave in such an irrational manner! ) Reading books like this one and speaking with counselors has provided us with useful insights that will help us interact with them in a healthy manner, if we ever get the chance again.
If you're going through this too, you are NOT alone! Get this book and read it. It helps you recognize behaviors that are harmful to you. It helps you learn to overcome problems in the past and avoid inappropriate treatment in the future. I also recommend the book "The Adult Child's Guide to What's Normal" by John C. Friel and Linda Friel for anyone who found this book helpful. It's not as detailed, but it gives a lot of information in a very easy-to-read format. If you're being manipulated by your parent(s), I recommend "Emotional Blackmail," also by Susan Forward. If you were put into an inappropriate role by your parents, I strongly suggest "Emotional Incest Syndrome" by Patricia Love and Jo Robinson. The title is disturbing but the information is excellent!Toxic Parents: Overcoming Their Hurtful Legacy and Reclaiming Your Life Overview

Time for mom-Me: 5 Essential Strategies for A Mother's Self-Care ReviewAs mothers, we find ourselves accustomed to juggling millions of things at once, only to find ourselves overwhelmed and uncertain about who we really are or where we stand in the world. Whether it's to our children, jobs, spouses, or family, we often times find ourselves second or forgotten. Rarely because our loved ones are not well intentioned but instead because we have fallen into the pits of unrealistic expectations of self and very poor self care. Time for mom-Me, 5 Essential Strategies for a Mother's Self-Care reveals just that. It's a God send; a wake up call on how neglecting Self deprives one of the fullness of life as a woman who happens to be a mother and an invaluable toolkit to help us negotiate the same level of care and attention that we so graciously give to others.
Thanks a million!Time for mom-Me: 5 Essential Strategies for A Mother's Self-Care Overview

Making a Case for Life: A New Definition of Perfection ReviewMaking a Case for Life by Stephanie Wincik is an eye opening book about Down Syndrome. Stephanie starts you out on a brief history of Down Syndrome then takes you into Myths associated with Down Syndrome. Myths that include Medical, Stress, and Burden on Society. Really these areas are eye opening in the book. We are often scared of the unfamiliar and rumors we hear from the medical community. With the tests being done now on pregnant women's blood during pregnancy to see if there are markers associated with a baby with Down Syndrome a lot of woman are now given the choice to decide if they want to carry a baby with Down Syndrome. But when given this choice they are also fed a lot of warnings and stories that may not be accurate depending on how familiar the doctor is with Down Syndrome. Stephanie specializes in health support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities living in community homes and her book really sheds light on some of the inaccuracies in information that is fed to mothers carrying babies with Down Syndrome. If more mothers were guided with correct information the number of babies with Down Syndrome being aborted would drop dramatically. This is definitely an eye opening book that anyone and everyone should read. Maybe with a little understanding of this Syndrome, peoples fear of the unknown would be calmed and acceptance and understanding would shine. Please check out her book and read for yourself!Making a Case for Life: A New Definition of Perfection Overview
