100 Words Every Word Lover Should Know ReviewAdmittedly, I am a word freak. Because I fear losing words, I bought this little book as a refresher. A mistake: There are fourteen words I did not know and two that drew less than satisfactory definitions from my mind. Now should I really admit this to the public after claiming I love words? Absolutely, an honest wordaholic is the only kind with respect.
Gravamen
Nope, could not define, but can now: "the part of a legal charge that weighs most substantially against the accused."
Nictitate
"To wink. Used especially in connection with birds...a transparent eyelid that closes to protect and moisten the eye."
Sesquipedalian
"Given to or characterized by the use of long words."
Ex., "the sesquipedalian prose of scientific journals."
Gemutlichkeit
"Warm friendliness, amicability."
Derived from the German "congenial" and "spirit or feelings"
I thought I knew gravamen, but could not adequately define the word, so it is one of the 16. The other one--not a clue, although "sesqui" is 16, and "ped" is foot, so 16 feet, but that did not take me any further.
I am keeping "100 Words" in an advantageous spot to pick up and review the old words and learn the new. Even though I am not given to using sesquipedalian words in daily speech, I can locate it in a sentence and will try to do so soon. Otherwise, I am just nictitating the reason for learning them. If taken to a jury, I would suffer the gravamen of negligent use. Even so, the judge and jury might exhibit gemutlichkeit toward me, but such an act will change nothing and I will begin spewing glossolalia toward them and the audience in defiance.
So much for time off for good behavior! I am behind before I even begin! Bon mot! That pretty much means Word up!

Fancy Nancy's Favorite Fancy Words: From Accessories to Zany ReviewThis book is really cute, as are all of the Fancy Nancy books. There is one word for each letter of the alphabet - one letter (word) per page - each word is beautifully illustrated. The book is smaller than the regular Fancy Nancy books, it's a little smaller than a sheet of notebook paper.
The words are the usual "fancy" words that Nancy uses. As for learning, I would recommend this for younger (3yr - 6yr) children. For enjoyment -the illustrations are my favorite - this book is great for all ages =)Fancy Nancy's Favorite Fancy Words: From Accessories to Zany Overview

Shorter Oxford English Dictionary: Sixth Edition ReviewI am an older person (69, wear specs) and have no problem with the print in the sixth edition of this great dictionary. Yes, the print is smaller than that of the fifth edition, but the volume itself is also smaller, less poundage, allowing an (older) arm to lift the darn thing without mechanical help--say, a forklift. No problem at all with the print. One technical note for Mac users regarding the CD-ROM. Tech support at Oxford tells me that a patch is on the way, but as of 25 Sept. 2007 the installed SOED is inoperative on both my iMAC G5 and MacBook. So until that patch arrives I'll just have to use the real thing, not a bad idea anyway. A great dictionary.
-------

A year later now (October 2008) and I've just installed the update to the application version of this great dictionary. And I'm happy to report that it works well on both an iMac G5 and a new MacBook. Loads fast and word look-ups are instantaneous. Impressive improvements over the original application.Shorter Oxford English Dictionary: Sixth Edition Overview

Words' Worth's Vocabulary Verse A to Z and Back Again: A Rhyming Romp through the Alphabet ReviewAs someone who has always loved books and working with words, I found Words'Worth's Vocabulary Verse by Susan Jones just a pure delight. I was reading it while traveling with my husband, and I was constantly saying, "Listen to this..."
Teaching third graders for my lifetime, I was always cognizant of making sure that my vocabulary rose above that of the average third grader, and would regularly add vocabulary study to our daily routine in the classroom. Words'Worth was fun for me! I learned new word meanings, enjoyed the quotes that contained the words, and truly appreciated the author's creativity in the verses she created for each word.
Susan Jones did a great job with this book. Anyone who enjoys word "study" will appreciate this book. The great thing is that the author makes it so much fun!
