Vocabulary Workshop: Level B ReviewAs a teacher and a dad, I have found that this series is a great way to teach vocabulary and is a great way to learn. Words have the pronunciation(which is also online in audio form), great definitions/synonyms/antonyms, and great exersises. There is a review every 3 chapters in each book and a review/test at the end of it too. Each book has about 12 chapters with 20 words to learn. Great to do weekly. As a teacher I would advise testing weekly 10 of the 20 words with spelling, meaning and using them in a sentence. I would then give them 5 additional words from any earlier chapter to keep them reviewing. These books are great. My students (from 6th-11th grade) all love them. After a few chapters students will comment how they can understand more when they read. It is also very cool to hear your kids learning these words in their daily lives.Vocabulary Workshop: Level B Overview

100 Vocabulary Words Kids Need to Know by 5th Grade (100 Words Workbook) ReviewI love this book! I've used both this one and the 4th grade version with my 5th graders for the past couple years and I have seen their vocabulary grow with leaps and bounds! It uses words that they actually do see all the time in their reading or hear on TV instead of those hard, never heard words that are in most vocabulary books. They get excited when they can find the words all throughout real life. There are lots of activities for each word list and it focuses on prefixes, suffixes, parts of speech, using the words in context, root words, and all those kinds of things that kids actually need to know instead of just a definition they don't understand anyway.100 Vocabulary Words Kids Need to Know by 5th Grade (100 Words Workbook) Overview

Plant Identification Terminology: An Illustrated Glossary ReviewThe title says it all. This is an illustrated glossary to the terms you may encounter while identifying plants. It is beautifully illustrated and the definitions are clear and concise. The book takes much of the pain out of using an identification key and is tremendously useful for both professionals and students.
I disagree with a previous reviewer who characterized this book as "shallow" because it doesn't include detailed information about the terms included. That's kind of like labeling a dictionary as "shallow" because it doesn't provide encyclopedic entries. "Plant Identification Terminology" isn't intended to be a comprehensive guide to plant morphology.
This is a wonderful book at a surprisingly reasonable price and for its intended purpose it is the only game in town - nothing else even comes close.Plant Identification Terminology: An Illustrated Glossary Overview

100 Words Every Word Lover Should Know ReviewAdmittedly, I am a word freak. Because I fear losing words, I bought this little book as a refresher. A mistake: There are fourteen words I did not know and two that drew less than satisfactory definitions from my mind. Now should I really admit this to the public after claiming I love words? Absolutely, an honest wordaholic is the only kind with respect.
Gravamen
Nope, could not define, but can now: "the part of a legal charge that weighs most substantially against the accused."
Nictitate
"To wink. Used especially in connection with birds...a transparent eyelid that closes to protect and moisten the eye."
Sesquipedalian
"Given to or characterized by the use of long words."
Ex., "the sesquipedalian prose of scientific journals."
Gemutlichkeit
"Warm friendliness, amicability."
Derived from the German "congenial" and "spirit or feelings"
I thought I knew gravamen, but could not adequately define the word, so it is one of the 16. The other one--not a clue, although "sesqui" is 16, and "ped" is foot, so 16 feet, but that did not take me any further.
I am keeping "100 Words" in an advantageous spot to pick up and review the old words and learn the new. Even though I am not given to using sesquipedalian words in daily speech, I can locate it in a sentence and will try to do so soon. Otherwise, I am just nictitating the reason for learning them. If taken to a jury, I would suffer the gravamen of negligent use. Even so, the judge and jury might exhibit gemutlichkeit toward me, but such an act will change nothing and I will begin spewing glossolalia toward them and the audience in defiance.
So much for time off for good behavior! I am behind before I even begin! Bon mot! That pretty much means Word up!

Vocabulary Workshop: Level F ReviewAs a foreign student who just started learning English 5 years ago, the verbal section is definitely my major obstacle to mastering the SAT. When I first took the PSAT, my verbal percentile was only a 49, but after working through all eight levels of Vocabulary Workshop (A through H) it has increased to a 99 (that was a year ago). Therefore I highly recommend this book to you (sincerely).
This book is a highly successful tool for guiding and stimulating systematic vocabulary growth for students. It has also been extremely valuable for preparing students to take the types of standardized vocabulary tests commonly used to assess grade placement, competence for graduation, and/or college readiness.
This book contains approximately 300 basic words, selected on the basis of currency in present-day usage, frequency on recognized vocabulary lists, applicability to standardized tests, and current grade-placement research.
The words in the book are organized into 15 short, stimulating units featuring pronunciation, parts of speech, definitions, synonyms, antonyms, and usage.
5 reviews (1 review for every 3 lessons) highlight and reinforce the work of the units through challenging exercises involving SAT-type critical-thinking exercises, definitions, synonyms, antonyms, analogies, sentence completions, word families...
4 accumulative reviews utilize standardized testing techniques to provide ongoing assessment of word mastery, all involving SAT-type critical-thinking.
Other features in this book include: a diagnostic test (which provides ready assessment of student needs at the outset of the term), a final mastery test (which provides end-of-term assessment of student achievement), word roots (which introduces the study of etymology)...Vocabulary Workshop: Level F Overview

Vocabulary Workshop: Level H ReviewI have used this at almost all the middle school and high school levels. It is ok, but if a student is not great at memorizing, or is not already a great speller, this is not as helpful as some other books. It is a very typical, rote way to learn. Worldly Wise is organized and structured in a much better way. It is especially great for teaching spelling/definitions, etc. to dyslexics or children with other minor learning issues. I also think Worldly Wise does a better job at showing definitions, showing how words are used in sentences and paragraphs, and also at showing homonyms, etc. Vocab. Workshop is great as an extra tool.Vocabulary Workshop: Level H Overview

501 Spanish Verbs: Fully Conjugated in All the Tenses in a New Easy-to-Learn Format Alphabetically Arranged ReviewWithout a doubt, 501 Spanish Verbs is the most useful book available to a student of the Spanish language. It is not just for students, however. I have heard that even fluent professors have had to consult this book at one time or another because they were confused about how a word was conjugated. Verbs are the backbone of the Spanish language, and if you don't know how to conjugate them, people won't understand you. I take this book with me whenever I go on vacation to Spanish speaking countries, and it has proved infinitely useful during conversations where I didn't know how to say a verb. Spanish speakers are incredibly patient if you don't understand them and need to look something up, and this book is definitely the most helpful.
I should also add one thing: This book unfortunately does not distinguish between verbs commonly used in Spain, and other verbs used in Latin America that mean the same thing. An example is abrasar (to burn or light) and abrazar (to hug). I was telling a Colombian security guard that I was lighting fireworks, and he was confused. Turns out I was saying that I was hugging fireworks. Abrasar is only used in Spain. In Latin America the word for lighting or burning something is Encender. I hope this book helps you as much as it did for me.501 Spanish Verbs: Fully Conjugated in All the Tenses in a New Easy-to-Learn Format Alphabetically Arranged Overview

100 Words To Make You Sound Smart ReviewWords are fun, entertaining, and educational! And that is what '100 Words To Make You Sound Smart' is all about folks. I have purposefully never reviewed a reference title, but this was simply to good to pass up. The editors of American Heritage Dictionaries really did a nice job here in selecting interesting, useful words that can and are used in our day-to-day vocabulary.
Each specific word was easily defined and placed into a useful context for readers to understand. Quoting from an assortment of sources including movies, television, magazines, and newspapers, it was fun to explore new words and to reacquaint myself with some old friends.
I have a suggestion for anyone interested: next time you're taking a road trip with someone you like, take this little diddy with you . . . and have some fun!100 Words To Make You Sound Smart Overview

Smart Words: Vocabulary for the Erudite ReviewJust found this book on a coffee table in a B&N. I was there to drink an espresso and browse through a business book. Next thing, I am there for 3 hours, reading half of the book and taking notes!
It's a great book. I think everyone should own and read it many times over. I noticed many French words as part of this book. Never heard of the author but her writing is easy to follow and practical. Every word has a definition followed by a real-world example.
Kudos to Mim Harrison and I highly recommend it.Smart Words: Vocabulary for the Erudite Overview

Fancy Nancy's Favorite Fancy Words: From Accessories to Zany ReviewThis book is really cute, as are all of the Fancy Nancy books. There is one word for each letter of the alphabet - one letter (word) per page - each word is beautifully illustrated. The book is smaller than the regular Fancy Nancy books, it's a little smaller than a sheet of notebook paper.
The words are the usual "fancy" words that Nancy uses. As for learning, I would recommend this for younger (3yr - 6yr) children. For enjoyment -the illustrations are my favorite - this book is great for all ages =)Fancy Nancy's Favorite Fancy Words: From Accessories to Zany Overview

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary of Synonyms and Antonyms ReviewI teach at a language school in Fort Lauderdale. Dozxens of students each month ask me, "How can I improve my English?" I tell them, "Get a dictionary with synonyms and opposites." The Webster S and A is the best I've found -- and portable, too.
It is vital for language learners to have something interesting to pull them forward. We tend to learn by what we are interested in and in what the opposite is. "That movie was ________" (interesting, great, fantastic...not boring, not slow, not hard to understand.) We tend to think in similars and opposites, so why not use a book that is designed to give you shades of meaning as well as the opposites? I highly recommend this book and I encourage students to pick it up. What is very good in this book? There is an example sentence to show the meaning, such as:
weak, feeble frail weak is broad, like a weak muscle, a week excuse, foundation. feeble usually shows ineffectiveness or smoethign we should pity: a feeble old man, feeble joke. frail suggests an inherited weakness, that something is weak in the structure: her frail body, a frail conscience.
You see what a valuable tool this is? I urge you to recommend this book to your learners of English, even if they are native speakers. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary of Synonyms and Antonyms Overview

240 Vocabulary Words 5th Grade Kids Need To Know: 24 Ready-to-Reproduce Packets That Make Vocabulary Building Fun & Effective ReviewThe vocabulary words on the cover include archipelago and medevac, but inside the book there are also many more rudimentary words. I'd be very concerned if my own kids didn't know the majority of these words before age ten. "Guidebook" and "masterpiece" are in the compound word section, "foul" and "fowl" in the homophone section, "thermometer" and "sympathy" under Greek. I do like the way that the workbook has variety and presents vocabulary in different ways. There's a tic tac toe antonym game, an explanation and fill in the blank area for eponyms such as bologna and tuxedo, and a crossword puzzle for Greek roots. The relatively few words that I consider remotely challenging include isthmus, tributary, onomatopoeia, snafu, and alliteration. This would be a fun book for a second or third grader, an ESL student, or someone in need of remedial help.240 Vocabulary Words 5th Grade Kids Need To Know: 24 Ready-to-Reproduce Packets That Make Vocabulary Building Fun & Effective Overview

100 Words Every High School Graduate Should Know ReviewI was strolling through my local bookstore and spotted this title in the reference section, begging to be picked up and thumbed through. I really wanted to check my vocabulary with that of a respectable high school senior.
It was eye-opening to say the least. The last time I was in a conventional classroom was upon receiving my bachelor's degree twenty years ago..... and I wondered if I had been adequately introduced to these words then... or not?
(It reminds me of the line Tom Hanks speaks in "Sleepless in Seattle" - "I don't even want to think about what they are not teaching you in school.")
I knew some words well - like oligarchy and usurp and feckless. I patted myself on the back in that moment.
I had been able to sort of "get" inculcate (to impress upon the mind of another by frequent instruction) but on the other hand, I had no idea what nanotechnology meant nor did I know much about the word "evanescent" except for some songs made popular by a band called "Evanescence" which I now can tell you means "vanishing like vapors."
The book includes an occasional quote from thinkers and writers which incorporates the word being stressed. My favorites included Willa Cather and Thomas Hobbes.
I noticed from visiting here at Amazon there is also a version of this book for college freshmen. I think my seventh grade daughter and I will start with that volume (a word a day) and work up to this one.
Not only was it educational, it was enjoyable - a significant combination.

500 Key Words for the SAT, and How to Remember Them Forever ReviewThe pneumonic devices in this book are a great way to learn new words, especially if you are reviewing for the SAT, PSAT or another standardized test. For example, the word "abstruse" means difficult to understand. There is a picture of two people, who the author calls the Abbs, who have just received a truce from a rival family. One of the Abbs is saying that he can't understand the truce. Whenever you hear the word in the future, you'll think of the Abbs and their truce and remember the definition! There, if you didn't already know that word, you just learned one! And one final comment... I took the PSAT this past fall and I had trouble with some of the harder vocabulary words. I was looking through the test for words I didn't know, and 3/4 if not more of the words I did not know for the test are in this book.500 Key Words for the SAT, and How to Remember Them Forever Overview

500 Advanced Words, 1st Edition: Manhattan GRE Vocabulary Flash Cards ReviewThese are a great match to the Essential Words cards, and they even start the numbering on these at 500 so you don't mix the two sets up if you don't want to. Here is my review of the essential words:
I bought the Kaplan AND these Manhattan GRE flashcards. The Manhattan are better, and here is why:
Basically they are both the same in content. The Kapplan have a nice pronunciation guide, which is the only benefit they have over these.
The Kaplan cards (NOT THESE MANHATTAN CARDS) are cheap. They are printed on thin paper, and they are physically pretty small. Also I wish the printing on the back were upside-down from how it is now (both brands are like this). These Manhattan cards are bigger, printed on card stock but still reasonably thin, and come with a nice key-ring that fits through holes. With these Manhattan cards you load up the key ring, and blast through about 50, maybe stash them in a large pocket and get to them later, or throw them in the backpack. Those Kaplan cards you are forced to try and keep the tiny cards together in stacks.
