Handbook to Literature, A (12th Edition) ReviewIf you have a question about English or American literature, chances are you'll find the answer here. William Harmon, professor of English at the University of North Carolina has revised and updated this handbook, long popular in academia. He's added more than 100 entries which reflect current trends in literature and criticism.
If you don't have a student at home, get this book anyway. Read it. Just the outline of English and American literary history in the back of the book is worth the price. You undoubtedly will find books here you never knew existed. I thought I'd read all of Eudora Welty, for instance, but I found a "new" title listed here -- new to me, at least. I also discovered a James Gould Cozzens book I'd never heard of.
The handbook is actually an encyclopedia of words and phrases pertaining to the study of literature. Listings are defined, explained and often illustrated. There are cross references. Appendices include complete lists of Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize winners for fiction, poetry and drama. The index of proper names in the back lists over 2,300 authors and prominent literary figures.
This book is a must for the home library. Also, it's entertaining as well as informative reading. You may well find yourself curled up with it, unwilling to tear yourself away.Handbook to Literature, A (12th Edition) Overview

Introduction to the Grammar of English (Cambridge Textbooks in Linguistics) ReviewI bought this book hoping for a gentle intro into grammar and linguistics and then more discussion of other advanced grammar/linguistic topics. It however dissappointed me greatly. Within the first 20 pages, he is talking about subordinate clauses and what not with no explanation of them. He says in the preface that all such terms are fully explained, but by chapter 6, one is swimming in an ocean of terms that were never explained. If I wanted to go back in lookup every term to be 100% clear about it, I would have bought a reference book. Damn, I had high hopes for this book !Introduction to the Grammar of English (Cambridge Textbooks in Linguistics) Overview

501 Spanish Verbs: Fully Conjugated in All the Tenses in a New Easy-to-Learn Format Alphabetically Arranged ReviewWithout a doubt, 501 Spanish Verbs is the most useful book available to a student of the Spanish language. It is not just for students, however. I have heard that even fluent professors have had to consult this book at one time or another because they were confused about how a word was conjugated. Verbs are the backbone of the Spanish language, and if you don't know how to conjugate them, people won't understand you. I take this book with me whenever I go on vacation to Spanish speaking countries, and it has proved infinitely useful during conversations where I didn't know how to say a verb. Spanish speakers are incredibly patient if you don't understand them and need to look something up, and this book is definitely the most helpful.
I should also add one thing: This book unfortunately does not distinguish between verbs commonly used in Spain, and other verbs used in Latin America that mean the same thing. An example is abrasar (to burn or light) and abrazar (to hug). I was telling a Colombian security guard that I was lighting fireworks, and he was confused. Turns out I was saying that I was hugging fireworks. Abrasar is only used in Spain. In Latin America the word for lighting or burning something is Encender. I hope this book helps you as much as it did for me.501 Spanish Verbs: Fully Conjugated in All the Tenses in a New Easy-to-Learn Format Alphabetically Arranged Overview

A Frequency Dictionary of Pali: Core Vocabulary for Learners ReviewThis is an interesting comprehensive Pali dictionary. The author's idea to select Pali vocabulary by frequency and only focus on canonical Pali (it seems to be mostly Sutta Pitaka Pali) makes sense. It gives someone who starts learning Pali a clue as to which words he see most often.
I especially liked the combination of word definition with sample sentences (all of which are real extracts from the Suttas and very short full sentences to see the word in its proper context).
At the end of the book there is an index, which is critical to find words.
All in all a very nice edition of core (fundamental) Pali vocabulary.A Frequency Dictionary of Pali: Core Vocabulary for Learners Overview

Longman Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics (4th Edition) ReviewThe Longman Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics provides a concise place where the language teacher or language researcher can find definitions of terms they don't remember in their field of specialization. It gives not only lengthy contextualized definitions but also provides references for those who want to look deeper into a topic. The dictionary also provides cross references to other relevant definitions.
The only thing that might be considered in revision is putting the words into categories under specialization as a possible appendix (i.e. sociolinguistics, language testing, psycholinguistics). This might help and entice the reader to look at the dictionary as a learning tool as well as a reference tool. This would provide an additional way to use the dictionary in order to learn specific vocabulary for a specialization under the umbrella of applied linguistics or language teaching.Longman Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics (4th Edition) Overview

240 Vocabulary Words 5th Grade Kids Need To Know: 24 Ready-to-Reproduce Packets That Make Vocabulary Building Fun & Effective ReviewThe vocabulary words on the cover include archipelago and medevac, but inside the book there are also many more rudimentary words. I'd be very concerned if my own kids didn't know the majority of these words before age ten. "Guidebook" and "masterpiece" are in the compound word section, "foul" and "fowl" in the homophone section, "thermometer" and "sympathy" under Greek. I do like the way that the workbook has variety and presents vocabulary in different ways. There's a tic tac toe antonym game, an explanation and fill in the blank area for eponyms such as bologna and tuxedo, and a crossword puzzle for Greek roots. The relatively few words that I consider remotely challenging include isthmus, tributary, onomatopoeia, snafu, and alliteration. This would be a fun book for a second or third grader, an ESL student, or someone in need of remedial help.240 Vocabulary Words 5th Grade Kids Need To Know: 24 Ready-to-Reproduce Packets That Make Vocabulary Building Fun & Effective Overview

The Oxford Dictionary of English Grammar (Oxford Paperback Reference) ReviewThis book was required for an introductory Latin class I took a semester ago. It proved helpful then, and is still helpful now. The ODEG is a useful tool for anyone who wishes to expand his or her knowledge of the manner in which our language functions. This book is a useful addition to a reference library, and I highly recommend it.The Oxford Dictionary of English Grammar (Oxford Paperback Reference) Overview

Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation ReviewReaders, check your reaction to the following sentence:
Lynne Truss, an English grammarian is bloody fed up with sloppy punctuation.
Does that sentence leave you feeling confused, irritated, or angry? Do you feel you have to second-guess the author of the sentence, forced to ascertain whether s/he was writing to Lynne Truss or about Ms. Truss?
But that sort of thing is almost the norm these days, on both sides of the Atlantic. Of course, we Americans have been struggling for years with FRESH DONUT'S DAILY and Your Server: "MILLY" -- not to mention the archy-and-mehitabel school of e-mail that neither capitalizes nor punctuates and reading through this kind of sentence really gets confusing i think it does at least do you too?
Turns out that even the British--including the elite "Oxbridge" inteligentsia--are wildly ignorant of punctuation's rules and standards. Lynne Truss, an English grammarian and author of EATS, SHOOTS & LEAVES, is bloody fed up with it! So she wrote this handy little book that is ever-so-correct but not condescending, sometimes savage but not silly, full of mission and totally without mush.
Think of Truss as punctuation's own Miss Manners, a combination of leather and lace, with maybe a bit more emphasis on the leather. (She advocates forming possees to paint out incorrect apostrophes in movie placards.) But her examples of bad punctuation serve a purpose: bad punctuation distorts meaning. EATS, SHOOTS & LEAVES includes numerous hilarious backfires of punctuation -- statements and missives that use the exact same words but convey totally opposite messages due to inappropriate punctuation.
Do commas go where they go for breathing, as the do-it-naturally school of non-grammar so many of us were exposed to would have it? Or were they for Medieval chanting or, more analytically, for grammar? Truss explains that it's a mish-mosh of all three, and proceeds to make useful sense of it all. Along the way she confesses she would have gladly borne the children of the 15th-Century Italian typographer who invented Italics and the forward-slash.
With its blend of high dudgeon and helpfulness, Truss steers the reader through the shoals of possession and apostrophes, quotations (British use is a bit differerent from North American, but only a bit, and she notes the difference), the useful if forlorn semicolon, the mighty colon, the bold and (mea culpa) overused dash and other interrupters like parenthesees and commas.
It's important to note that Truss, while something of a true believer, is a believer who lives in the 21st Century. She does not advocate turning back the clock to the 1906 version of Fowler's MODERN ENGLISH USAGE; she is not a snob; she does not overwhelm us with technical terms of grammar and punctuation for their own sake. Just good, common-sense English prescriptive lessons in grammar. People who know they don't know their stuff will learn the right stuff there. People who felt that "the rules" have somehow become archaic in the last thirty years will be happy to see that there are still rules, and while they have become more fluid and pragmatic, they haven't changed inordinately. "It's" still means "It is" and "Its" is still a possessive: "It's a wise publisher that knows its public," say.
Best of all, the teaching is conveyed with wit, bite, and in a snappy tome easy to carry and inexpensive. I'm a former English teacher and I couldn't help but learn and laugh. Highly recommended.
Oh, John Updike? He uses comma faults all that time, that's a sentence like this that splices main clauses together with a comma, maybe using semicolons or starting a new sentence would be better. For us mere mortals, though, standard punctuation fits the norm: once we become world-famous, then we can punctuate at will.Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation Overview

Teaching Language: From Grammar to Grammaring ReviewThis book doesn't provide grammar activities or explain grammar rules. What you will get is an understanding of what grammar really is. Grammar is not just the rules that your English teacher taught you back in high school. It is much more than rules. This book presents how grammar is viewed through Second Language Acquisition Theory. Also the author dismisses some common preconceptions about grammar that may be holding teachers back from understanding what grammar really is--a dynamic process. To gain a better understanding of this process, I recommend that teachers pick up this book. It's not so thick, so it should be a quick read.Teaching Language: From Grammar to Grammaring Overview

240 Vocabulary Words 3rd Grade Kids Need To Know: 24 Ready-to-Reproduce Packets That Make Vocabulary Building Fun & Effective ReviewVocabulary is the corner stone of good reading and writing. Many smart kids cannot raise their reading level because of limited vocabulary. Unlike some other skills, a good vocabulary cannot be achieved over a short period. Young kids need to learn and read extensively to snowball their words. This book is a great help. It organizes essential third grade words in 24 lessons, and teaches them with activities and drills. Its well-designed questions help to clarify the related words that kids often misuse otherwise. The word selection is thoughtful and suitable for 3rd grade level. My child used it for learning as well as for assessment. He finished it in 2 months.
For further word practice, I found Beestar weekly ELA program has more such drills (a nice web site at http://www.beestar.org). My child's vocabulary is improved effectively with these word lessons. His reading and writing level is rising at the same time. A solid book!
