100 Vocabulary Words Kids Need to Know by 5th Grade (100 Words Workbook) ReviewI love this book! I've used both this one and the 4th grade version with my 5th graders for the past couple years and I have seen their vocabulary grow with leaps and bounds! It uses words that they actually do see all the time in their reading or hear on TV instead of those hard, never heard words that are in most vocabulary books. They get excited when they can find the words all throughout real life. There are lots of activities for each word list and it focuses on prefixes, suffixes, parts of speech, using the words in context, root words, and all those kinds of things that kids actually need to know instead of just a definition they don't understand anyway.100 Vocabulary Words Kids Need to Know by 5th Grade (100 Words Workbook) Overview

240 Vocabulary Words 5th Grade Kids Need To Know: 24 Ready-to-Reproduce Packets That Make Vocabulary Building Fun & Effective ReviewThe vocabulary words on the cover include archipelago and medevac, but inside the book there are also many more rudimentary words. I'd be very concerned if my own kids didn't know the majority of these words before age ten. "Guidebook" and "masterpiece" are in the compound word section, "foul" and "fowl" in the homophone section, "thermometer" and "sympathy" under Greek. I do like the way that the workbook has variety and presents vocabulary in different ways. There's a tic tac toe antonym game, an explanation and fill in the blank area for eponyms such as bologna and tuxedo, and a crossword puzzle for Greek roots. The relatively few words that I consider remotely challenging include isthmus, tributary, onomatopoeia, snafu, and alliteration. This would be a fun book for a second or third grader, an ESL student, or someone in need of remedial help.240 Vocabulary Words 5th Grade Kids Need To Know: 24 Ready-to-Reproduce Packets That Make Vocabulary Building Fun & Effective Overview

The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know ReviewI am a foreign citizen living in the US for about 4 years for graduate level degree in the US. Culture as well as language are the biggest obstacles of my life in the US. I overcame the basic survival and class language barrier after living 2-3 years, but the cultural barrier with combined with conversational language is very challenging. Not only for more socializing but also more nature English writing and speacking, I worked hard, and Culturacy Dictionary helps me a lot. It includes expressions from various areas, e.g. bible, literature, idiom, etc. During the reading or watching TV, I can understand better the implications and expressions rooted from relgion, history, literature, and other areas of culture.
I use this dictionary with several ways. First, just read the page I am intersted in. Second, I consult it during my writing to find better expression, and do more research to understand the background better via internet. Third, play game with this book with my American Classmates - in fact, this helps me the most. They explain what is not written in the dictionary, and this is the way I can acquire the knowledge of the expression easily and last long in my brain.
This dictionary is wonderful, I think, for both for navtive and non-native. Non natives can upgrade their English level with cultural understanding, and natives can be more sophisticated using their languages. It is a great tool, and I am happy to find it!The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know Overview

Guiding Readers and Writers (Grades 3-6): Teaching, Comprehension, Genre, and Content Literacy ReviewAgain, Fountas and Pinnell have helped teachers with their incredible insight on educating children. This time their help/advice/knowledge focuses on grades 3-6 but do not let that stop you if you teach another grade level. Their information on the essential components of a quality literacy program is true for any grade level. Fountas and Pinnell offer suggestions for effectively helping readers and writers who are not meeting "standard". These suggestions are specific and establish teaching practices that will help all readers and writers. They also give many mini lesson ideas and great literature connections that make a teacher's job easier. The appendices include forms for language/word study for both reading and writing and for literary assessment. Once again, their book ends with a valuable book list that is leveled. This book is an essential resource for all teachers.Guiding Readers and Writers (Grades 3-6): Teaching, Comprehension, Genre, and Content Literacy Overview

Reading with Meaning ReviewIf you have dedicated yourself to producing thoughtful readers who read for meaning, this is the book you need! Not only is it filled with helpful lesson ideas, but the arrangement of each chapter follows a scaffolded approach to help young readers engage and develop as lifelong readers. Miller shows teachers how to lay out the entire year. Included in this book are chapters about schema building, mental images, inferring, questioning, non-fiction reading, and synthesizing. She focuses on one comprehension strategy in each chapter, including how to introduce it to students AND what children's books she considers "tried-and-true." At the end of each chapter, the author includes a list of children's book titles that all highlight the comprehension strategy perfectly for young children. I have purchased many of the titles that she recommends. All of the books are outstanding pieces of literature that children adore. Also, the lessons work well in a Reader's Workshop format. After instruction, students can get busy practicing reading from their own books by using what they learned right away. This book is an outstanding resource for any teacher!Reading with Meaning Overview
