Isabelle/HOL: A Proof Assistant for Higher-Order Logic (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) ReviewIsabelle is fantastic, and this is an excellent tutorial.
With Isabelle, all the mystery of math and proof goes away
and everything becomes concrete... just like programming.
The only improvement that I'd like to see is that the
tutorial be rewritten using the Isar proof language.Isabelle/HOL: A Proof Assistant for Higher-Order Logic (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) Overview

From Logic to Logic Programming (Foundations of Computing) ReviewThis book is an excellent introduction to logic as it is applied to logic programming. It begins with a set of mathematical preliminaries, mathematical induction, trees, multisets, ordinals and cardinals. This is a ten-page refresher that most readers will be able to skip. Chapter two covers propositional logic, but this is not a standard overview of the subject. Advanced theorems such as the Soundness and Completeness theorems are stated and succinctly proven.
First-order logic is the topic of chapter three, and the coverage is thorough with it being aimed directly at the topic of chapter four, which is program-definability. In any complex programming project, one of the most difficult problems to resolve is how the data is to be represented in the computer. Chapter four explains how domains such as the natural numbers, binary notation and lists can be represented using the Herbrand Universe model.
The final three chapters cover linear resolution, infinite derivations, computability and negation. Mathematical proofs can be based on either verification of a positive or affirmation of a negative. Linear resolution can only deduce positive information from programs, infinite derivations and negation can be used to affirm a negative, indirectly deducing the opposite positive. Exercises are included at the end of each chapter, but no solutions are given.
This book is the best place to begin if you want to understand the mathematical foundations of logic programming. However, at least one course in mathematical logic is a precondition to that understanding.

Programming in Haskell ReviewThis is a very good introduction to the fundamentals concepts of haskell but it doesn't teach you what you need to know to start writing (or reading) non-trivial programs. Topics that are not covered at all are monad rules, monad trasformers and monad functions like mapM. Syntactic sugars not covered at all are "module", "newtype", "case/of", "let/in".Programming in Haskell Overview

Engineering mathematics handbook: Definitions, theorems, formulas, tables ReviewFirst of all my review is on the 1979 version of this book. It has been in my possession that long. Once again today, it helped me drag up a mathematical fact I had long forgotten.
In 1976 I graduated from college with an associates degree in engineering. I had high school algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus behind me. Also with my two year degree, I had calculus, analytical geometry and differential equations as well. I needed a single reference that would cover everything. Then I happened upon this book in a bookstore. What a prize this was!
Since that time, I have completed both my B.S.M.E and a Masters in Mechanical Engineering and I have this dog eared book beside me at all time. From looking up linear algebraic equations, differential calculus, vector analysis, complex variables, all the way to the formula for the eccentricity of an ellipse for my son this evening, this book has baled me out of referring to ten other books. It is well worth the investment.
Ironically, years later when discussing a geometric equation with a co-worker he commented that he relied on a great reference he found in book store many years earlier while attending college. You got it, it was the same book.
What I can't speak to is the last two chapters that are new to this edition. Mine only goes to Chapter 20.
What I also should note, as a Mechanical engineer using this, I found it incredibly useful. I have no idea if a person that does not regularly use geometry, trigonometry, algebra, calculus, linear algebra, etc., would get very much use from it or not. For students in this field I found it to be very useful. Basically, read the table of contents Amazon provides and make your own judgement.Engineering mathematics handbook: Definitions, theorems, formulas, tables Overview

Java and the Java Virtual Machine: Definition, Verification, Validation Reviewthis book is one of a kind, among all the java books on the market. it breaks the java language into 5 (progressive) layers, and gives the abstract syntax, static semantic (type constraints), dynamic semantic (interpretation), and complitation rules of each layer. This approach is effective, mathematically rigorous, and believe or not, fun to read!
as most of the PL books with formal flavor, the notations take some time to get use to. but the rewarding is worth the effort: you get a very clear picture of language itself. the examples are quite interesting, and the software on the CD does a superb job animating the intrepretation of java programs.
all in all, a very good (academic) book, perfect for computer scientists or CS major graduate student interested in PL, but probably not for everyday programmers.Java and the Java Virtual Machine: Definition, Verification, Validation Overview
