An Introductory Dictionary of Lacanian Psychoanalysis ReviewDylan Evans, a Lecturer in Psychoanalytic Studies at the University of Brunel and an analysist in private practice in London has written a very helpful dictionary of Lacanian terms and terminology. The Dictionary has both short and more lengthy entries, with the more complicated terms such as the Real, the Symbolic and the Imaginary, the Other, the Mirror Stage, etc., each meriting longer essays of up to two pages. My interest in Lacan is presently primarily in terms of literary theory but the book is perhaps even more suited to someone approaching Lacan from a psychoanalytic angle, as most of the definitions are analyst-oriented. This is not the book from which to "learn Lacan" of course, and there are a number of good introductions available, such as Bruce Fink's and Jean-Michel Rabate's, in addition to the Cambridge Companion to Lacan. Also, beginners would probably be well advised not to start with the Seminars or Ecrits, but with one of these introductions, then moving on to Lacan's writings with this as a good guide through the very ideosyncratic (and shifting over time) vocabulary. I have found this book to be a great help in navigating Lacan! An Introductory Dictionary of Lacanian Psychoanalysis Overview

The Meaning of Anxiety ReviewI read this this book a few years back when I was in the throes of my own, rather intense, "anxiety disorder." I read many books on anxiety during this period and found that most of them fit into one of two catagories. The first catagory is the "conquer anxiety disorder" type, which explain the disorder in psycho-medical terms and propose a number of techniques (including drugs in some cases) for alleviating the symptoms. Some of these I found helpful, but they give very little insight into the "root" of the disorder or its deep psychological causes. The other type of book, which is more rare, delves into the philosophical and psychological roots of anxiety. Rollo May's book fits into the later catagory. Rollo May was a student of Paul Tillich who wrote "The Courage to Be" which examines anxiety from an ontological and existential viewpoint. He had a lot of influence on May's thought. The Meaning of Anxiety is an in depth study of anxiety: what it is, where it comes from, what purpose it serves, and in some ways how to transcend it. This book gives real insight into anxiety. The major thinkers on anxiety tend to be existentialists like May, Tillich, and Kierkegaard. When you read their work you gain a much broader perspective on this thing called anxiety. The Meaning of Anxiety Overview

Unclaimed Experience: Trauma, Narrative and History ReviewIf you want to understand the state of trauma studies in their relation to the humanities, you absolutely must be familiar with Caruth's work. This book and her collection of edited essays were in large part responsible for the work on trauma within literature, film, and cultural studies since 1990.
It is important to recognize that Caruth is neither a clinician nor a psychiatrist. She is working on analyzing written and filmed texts ranging from Freud's theories in "The Interpretation of Dreams," "Beyond the Pleasure Principle" and "Moses and Monotheism" to Paul de Man's post-structuralist literary theory to Alain Resnais's film "Hiroshima Mon Amour" to understand how these texts theorize trauma. She is interested in the discourse that has developed around trauma, the written record that affects how we--as literary scholars AND as psychologists, psychiatrists, and physicians--currently conceive of trauma.Unclaimed Experience: Trauma, Narrative and History Overview

The Web of Life: A New Scientific Understanding of Living Systems ReviewThe difference between a mechanistic and a holistic view of the Universe is even greater than the difference between a flat and a round Earth. The problem is, the vast majority of us are still stuck with a perception of the world that is based on fundamentally flawed theories passed down to us by Newton and Descartes. In other words, everything you know is wrong.
We do not so much live in a universe of space filled with objects as our senses imply or as the classical physicists postulated, as we are all part of an interconnected and self-organizing universe of changing patterns and flowing energy.
This holistic worldview recognizes the connections and interdependencies in the world rather than merely separating the world into parts and attempting to reconstruct it like a child playing with blocks. By trying to understand the world merely in terms of its parts we obscure the properties that emerge from the interplay between the parts. The Universe is indeed greater than the sum of its parts.
Capra's outstanding achievement in "The Web of Life" is to communicate so plainly, effectively and compellingly the outline of the holistic paradigm and the impending shift. "The Web of Life" is THE primer for the dynamical systems theory that you will need to compete (and to integrate) in the 21st Century.
Deep Ecology, Gaia Theory, and an incredible new theory of cognition are among the many ideas explored in the book as well as feedback loops, complexity and chaos theory, dissipative structures and autopoietic, or self-organizing, systems.
This is a moving and transforming book that will inform and inspire. I refer to it constantly and give it the highest recommendation. The Web of Life: A New Scientific Understanding of Living Systems Overview

Psychological Types (Collected Works of C.G. Jung Vol.6) ReviewIf you're familiar with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and want to know more about it then _Psychological Types_ is one title you'd certainly want to read. It is the definitive work on which the MBTI is based. In this volume Jung explains in detail what the nature of the two attitudes--introversion and extraversion--really are, as well as that of the four functions--intuition, sensation, thinking, and feeling. He also discusses various combinations of these attitudes and functions, such as Introverted-Thinking, Introverted-Feeling, Extraverted-Sensation, etc.
It is Jung who gave us the terms introversion and extraversion. But our colloquial understanding of these terms are not exactly what Jung had in mind. For instance introversion he says means "an inward-turning of libido [psychic energy]." Moreover, the introverted person is one who orients himself predominantly by subjective views in contrast to the extraverted who orients himself by objective (external) conditions. Therefore, extraversion and introversion have to do with which realm--outer or inner--the person is drawn to and invests his energies in. So much for our simplistic notions of what these now household words mean!
Personally, I have not read the first half of the book. When I got my copy I went straight to Chapter 10 "General Description of the Types" since that's where the meat of Jungian typology can be found. And let's not forget the four essays in the appendix. They too offer additional insights into typology.
As a bonus there is an entire chapter (some 80 pages) entitled "Definitions" which is actually an in-depth glossary of some of the more important terms and ideas that Jung uses throughout the Collected Works.
If you'd like to learn about (Jungian) personality typology then I suggest you get this relatively inexpensive paperback edition. I've read many works on Jungian typology but nothing beats getting it straight from the horse's mouth.Psychological Types (Collected Works of C.G. Jung Vol.6) Overview

Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy, Fifth Edition ReviewNo lengthy explanation needed here. I am a graduate counseling psychology student with a particular interest and experience in groups. We refer to this particular Yalom book as the group therapy "bible," since it pretty much contains everything you could ever need to know about the basics of running therapy (and even support) groups. This is one of very few books I've had to read for school that I actually couldn't STOP reading--it's that good. My professor for this course has been doing groups for over 20 years and says she still refers back to this book for insight when leading her groups. Also check out Yalom's book on existential therapy! There is some case study overlap with the group book, but it's another favorite. And don't let the size of this book intimidate you. You won't be able to put it down! Yalom is the man . . . Happy reading!Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy, Fifth Edition Overview

Crossing and Dwelling: A Theory of Religion ReviewKafka writes, "When the sage says: 'Go over,' he does not mean that we should cross to some actual place." Likewise, the genius of this work is not in its literal examples -- its religious documentation and theoretical viruosity -- but in its metaphoric ambition. For Tweed, religion is mobility, negotiation, exchange. While many theologians and historians put religion in neat chronological boxes, or dissect it like a frog pinned to a platter, Tweed attempts to understand religious life as it is lived: in daily negotiations, imaginations, and revelations. A book for the scholar and the believer alike, this imaginative and intensely intellectual study will revolutionize the way you understand contemporary fundamentalism, New Agism, and transnational religious movements.Crossing and Dwelling: A Theory of Religion Overview
