Dtv: The Revolution I Electronic Imaging (Mcgraw-Hill Video/Audio Engineering Series) ReviewJerry Whitaker has been in the Radio and Television broadcast industry for many years, and has earned the highest awards in the field. This publication is his first forray into the newly emerging world of digital TV. The field is huge, much more complex and varied than the older world of television and radio transmission. In part the new complexity is due to the role of computers in generating and consuming broadcast imagery. More importantly, modern understanding of image compression and data brodcasting has added additional services and markets which much be addressed by the new system and it have become much more of an undertaking to cover all of these areas in one book.
Mr Whitaker does an admirable job of taking on this task. His summary of the political process leading up to the Grand Alliance is well worth reading for newcomers to the field as well as those who have been involved through the whole process. I found the clear description of the lineage of certain SMPTE standards to be quite useful.
The two chapters on applications and fundamental principles provide some crucial background for the novice in the field, but are probably better covered in books specifically on those areas. For instance, Blair's treatment of fundamentals in the "TV & Radio Engineer's Handbook" is a little more thorough, and would suit a class better than this book.
The section on digital coding is very well written; I'd reccomend this section for anyone considering implementing a digital broadcast facility. The compression chapter supports it well, though again as a textbook on compression one would do better with Jain's book, or possibly one of the many books on JPEG/MPEG.
I was least impressed with the section on production systems. In part, this is due to the rapid advancement in this area, but I found that the lack of discussion of emerging DV standards, some of the issues of image bandwidth, and the discussion of colorimetry to leave a bit to be desired. There is no better summary out there right now, but several authors are working on titles which should better address this area in the near future.
His sections on audio encoding, transmission, and recievers were all quite useful to me as a systems engineer. Specifically, the information on receivers would be useful for technical journalists and consumer sales and marketing professionals in the field, as well as engineers interested in the limitations and possiblities of new display technologies. This section in particular is well written and extremely accurate.
Finally, I found the references to be extremely well done; there is no existing collection of references as thorough as this one. The only minor shortcomming is in the index; the book could have benefitted from a larger index.
This book is a must-have for anyone involved in DTV/HDTV engineering. Despite a few minor shorcomings, it will be a valuable addittion to the practitioner's library.Dtv: The Revolution I Electronic Imaging (Mcgraw-Hill Video/Audio Engineering Series) Overview

HDTV and the Transition to Digital Broadcasting: Understanding New Television Technologies ReviewThis could be titled 'More than you ever wanted to know about Digital TV and HDTV'. It is a very comprehensive and detailed description of the two TV enhancements, comparing their differences, similarities and interrelationships.
I cannot accurately vouch for its accuracy or technical completeness but, for example, the author's description of the history of TV development differs somewhat from what I remember. There is a very good chance that he is correct and that my memories have been distorted by the aging process. He does include an adequate bibliography in the volume.
This book is not for beginners. I would expect that it would be very tough sledding for someone without a BSEE in Electronics, an FCC broadcast license, and/or significant experience as a TV serviceman or the like.
For the record, I have a BA degree with a Math major and an Electronics minor; I was an Electronics Technician (first class) in the Navy, had an
FCC broadcast license (second class) and state licenses with MATV endorsement in New York and Indiana. Foor many years I was a computer systems analyst full time and a part-time radio/TV serviceman. I am now enjoying retirement.

Digital Television, Second Edition: MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and Principles of the DVB System ReviewComprehensive, contains all the important diagrammes and thumb rules. I recommend this book to the novice as well as to experts. Readers who are familiar with signal processing and digital communication issues will find this book very interesting and a good source of knowledge; and those who are already DVB professionals will regard it as an excellent conclusion with all the important and useful numbers, tables, and diagrams.Digital Television, Second Edition: MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and Principles of the DVB System Overview

Video Codec Design: Developing Image and Video Compression Systems ReviewThis book attempts to tell you everything about all the video
compression standards in less than 300 pages. Now does that
really sound possible ?
It was obviously put together this way to appeal to the widest
possible audience, and therefore dilutes its content on each
of the individual coding standards (MPEG-1,2,4 H.263, H.264)
to the point of being useless.
JPEG gets a disproportionate 5 pages, which is not video really,
and then MPEG-2 gets 3 pages and MPEG-4 1 page. Then H.261
H.263 and H.26L are grouped together and are discussed in 13
pages.
Then the book goes into Motion Estimation/Compensation, but
of course it's presented as a generic subject not specific
to any of the standards, which is okay for the pure ME part
but the various encoding modes of the individual standards
are lost (hey, isn't this a HUGE part of understanding
video compression ?).
Rate control, the brains of the video codec, is glossed over.
There is a brief intro to Rate-Distortion theory which doesn't
mention clearly that this is impractical from an implementation
standpoint, and then a brief rehash of TM5 for MPEG-2 and TM8
for H.263.
So far, the only decent book I've found on video compression
(where my interest has been MPEG-2) is "Techniques and Standards
for Image, Video and Audio Coding" by Rao and Hwang.
Then again, I haven't found a thing in any of these books that
you cannot find on the web for free that is much better.Video Codec Design: Developing Image and Video Compression Systems Overview

Digital Television Fundamentals ReviewThe name is a little misleading - the book is really about television, and digital video (JPEG,MJEPEG, MPEG-1,MPEG-2 etc.) and digital audio and computer aspects of such. Detailed descriptions of algorithms, methods of coding/decoding. Highly recommended to everybody who deals with digital video production, digital video equipment design or just wants to know exactly how it works.Digital Television Fundamentals Overview

Digital Video and HD: Algorithms and Interfaces (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Graphics) ReviewCharles Poynton is one of the world's leading experts on TV and video technology, and he's a great writer too. Poynton demonstrates good humor and tremendous attention to detail in this book. In fact, the price of the book is both funny and technically relevant-- it's the field rate of NTSC video, 59.94 Hertz!
Poynton details dozens of video standards in this book, which builds on his previous _A Technical Introduction to Digital Video_. That book has held a place of honor in my technical library since it was published, and Poynton's latest work will sit beside it.
_Digital Video and HDTV Algorithms and Interfaces_ is an even more substantial work than its predecessor, with 736 very readable pages covering essentially the whole world of digital video. Poynton starts the book with a comprehensive review of how images are composed, displayed and perceived, and brings in the relevant elements of specific video standards as he goes.
The second and third parts of the book cover all the other fundamental technologies that make digital video possible, including filtering algorithms, color science, and video compression.
Part 4 provides a detailed explanation of the key standards used for studio video production work, both analog and video, with a whole chapter to explain standard-definition test signals. Part 5 is a complementary discussion of broadcast and consumer standards. The book also includes two appendices explaining some important issues related to digital video, and a very thorough glossary.
I've been designing and writing about computer graphics and multimedia products for many years, and this is by far the best overview of digital video that I've seen. I highly recommend this book for everyone who is professionally involved in video engineering.

Blu-ray Disc Demystified ReviewThis is a good book and offers a lot of information about Blu-Ray. I am planning to create some fancy blu-ray discs from my HD camcorder and I wanted to get familiar with the format.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that besides the technical info (codecs, limitations, etc), this book also includes some information on how to prepare your assets for blu-ray authoring.
Highly recommended! Probably the best book available to date. I subtracted a star because it could be better organized and it also could get more in depth about the compression codecs. It should be more like 4.5 stars....
