How Video Works Review"How Video Works" was just the right book for me. For the reader who has little knowledge of video, or who wants a comprehensive review souce that treats the subject from the ground up, this is an excellent choice. Video is a feature of my business, but I am not a technician. This book gave me the understanding I needed to be effective when discussing video and made an immediate impact on my ability to work with customers. It is an excellent reference, well written, and easily readable by both the technician and non-technician alike. How Video Works Overview

Master Shots: 100 Advanced Camera Techniques to Get an Expensive Look on Your Low-Budget Movie ReviewFor the beginner or occasional filmmaker, this is a great book. Essentially it is an encyclopedia of master shots, a hundred of them. Most are illustrated with stills from various films and with 3D models created in Poser 7.
The author provides details about how the shot is set up, the feeling the shot is intended to convey and pertinent information. Kenworthy deliberately stays away from things like lenses, equipment, lighting and so on.
His point is that the shots can be accomplished with any kind of camera. It is the point of view that matters and the action that establishes the meaning of the shot and advances the story.
Master Shots is definitely an aid to the beginning filmmaker or those who shoot only occasionally and could you a bit of assistance in visualizing how to tell their story.
For a very reasonable cost, you have a hundred classic master shots diagrammed and explained for you. Good deal.

Dtv: The Revolution I Electronic Imaging (Mcgraw-Hill Video/Audio Engineering Series) ReviewJerry Whitaker has been in the Radio and Television broadcast industry for many years, and has earned the highest awards in the field. This publication is his first forray into the newly emerging world of digital TV. The field is huge, much more complex and varied than the older world of television and radio transmission. In part the new complexity is due to the role of computers in generating and consuming broadcast imagery. More importantly, modern understanding of image compression and data brodcasting has added additional services and markets which much be addressed by the new system and it have become much more of an undertaking to cover all of these areas in one book.
Mr Whitaker does an admirable job of taking on this task. His summary of the political process leading up to the Grand Alliance is well worth reading for newcomers to the field as well as those who have been involved through the whole process. I found the clear description of the lineage of certain SMPTE standards to be quite useful.
The two chapters on applications and fundamental principles provide some crucial background for the novice in the field, but are probably better covered in books specifically on those areas. For instance, Blair's treatment of fundamentals in the "TV & Radio Engineer's Handbook" is a little more thorough, and would suit a class better than this book.
The section on digital coding is very well written; I'd reccomend this section for anyone considering implementing a digital broadcast facility. The compression chapter supports it well, though again as a textbook on compression one would do better with Jain's book, or possibly one of the many books on JPEG/MPEG.
I was least impressed with the section on production systems. In part, this is due to the rapid advancement in this area, but I found that the lack of discussion of emerging DV standards, some of the issues of image bandwidth, and the discussion of colorimetry to leave a bit to be desired. There is no better summary out there right now, but several authors are working on titles which should better address this area in the near future.
His sections on audio encoding, transmission, and recievers were all quite useful to me as a systems engineer. Specifically, the information on receivers would be useful for technical journalists and consumer sales and marketing professionals in the field, as well as engineers interested in the limitations and possiblities of new display technologies. This section in particular is well written and extremely accurate.
Finally, I found the references to be extremely well done; there is no existing collection of references as thorough as this one. The only minor shortcomming is in the index; the book could have benefitted from a larger index.
This book is a must-have for anyone involved in DTV/HDTV engineering. Despite a few minor shorcomings, it will be a valuable addittion to the practitioner's library.Dtv: The Revolution I Electronic Imaging (Mcgraw-Hill Video/Audio Engineering Series) Overview

Grammar of the Shot, Second Edition ReviewHaving plodded through many film and video production books, it is refreshing to come across a more compact and succinct publication. Grammar of the Shot (2nd Edition) by Roy Thompson and Christopher Bowen provides a clear and concise explanation of motion picture visual language. This universal language (or grammar) is an essential foundation for filmmakers to produce a film or video. "As a filmmaker, when you "speak" the common film language, you will be able to communicate your story to a global audience."
Grammar of the Shot elucidates the basic techniques and concepts of visual grammar --framing shots, camera angles and movement, focal lengths, lighting, and 3D elements; And it tackles more complex concepts such as manipulating depth of field, aesthetics of lighting, and how to cross the 180 degree line safely.
Practical shooting advice is given as well as recommendations on achieving more compelling shots. Although little attention is given to post production (devoted to companion text, Grammar of the Edit), this book emphasizes how to shoot with editing in mind. Topics concerned with the editing process include coverage, continuity issues, the180 degree rule, reciprocating imagery, and eye-line matches.
Peppered throughout the text are photographs, illustrations, and diagrams to illustrate key concepts and techniques. There are useful reviews at the end of each chapter and a glossary and index. I highly recommend Grammar of the Shot for film and video production classes. In addition, it would be useful for emerging filmmakers and for those who need a refresher.Grammar of the Shot, Second Edition Overview

Grammar of the Edit, Second Edition ReviewLike Roy Thompson's original guide, this second edition focuses not so much on the how of editing but the why. There are lots of technical guides out there for editors, that tell you what you can do and how to do it, but what good editors really need is understanding of what works and why. An editor who understands what to do and why to do it can easily apply that understanding to this or that editing technology. For understanding basic principles of an edit that "works," I don't think there is a better guide than this one (which, for contemporary readers marks a valuable improvement on the previous edition).
Basically, what you can find here is a set of simple rules for what will "cut well" together. The book clearly describes several basic guidelines or principles for how to put shots together in ways that flow and effortlessly convey simple meanings. Of course you can break these rules, and some very good editors have broken them. I think, however, that the author is right to suggest that in such cases the power of such effects rests upon the fact that the editor was well aware that he or she was breaking the rules and wanted the effect upon the audience that would result from the jarring or unsettling (or novel) feeling of something not quite natural (or at least distinctive) being done.
The book in fact identifies several cases in which there would be an exception to the rules and how to solve such cases. The second edition appears on the surface to be significantly different, and it has been updated significantly with illustrations and vocabulary that will speak more directly to readers who will edit almost exclusively on the computer. While the picture on the cover shows a pair of scissors slicing through a piece of celluloid, the book speaks exclusively of editing rather than "cutting" as did the earlier edition. Still, in its essentials, the book remains as useful as always, and as focused on "principles" rather than "techniques." Like the previous edition, the book also emphasizes that editing is a role within a complex production process, and that the editor has very specific professional expectations that are distinct from those of the director, or writer or cinematographer, even if (as in some independent or non-professional projects) the same person happens to be performing some or all of these roles.
Highly recommended for filmmakers at all levels: it will be useful for cinematographers and directors (and home video enthusiasts) as a guide in shooting elements that the editor will be able, later, to put together into a coherent story form. It will also serve for the beginning editor as a convenient distillation of the principles they should take into account in order to avoid jarring the audience and taking them out of the story.Grammar of the Edit, Second Edition Overview

The Filmmaker's Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide for the Digital Age ReviewI have an entire library of filmmaking books - this one book (esp. the 2008 update) is fantastic - covering every aspect of filmmaking - and not just the technical stuff - even working with actors, directing and some basics of film theory. Of course it is best at the technical side - including HD production and post production editing. Very few of my collection come close to this one for breadth and depth. The Filmmaker's Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide for the Digital Age Overview

Video Compression ReviewDefinitely, an excellent introductory book on video compressionfundamentals. The book is very well written in a simple and clearway. It explains the basics of audio, image and video compression techniques, with a minimum of math. However, you won't find detailed implementation issues, and it has some mismatches in the examples and in the formulas used. If you know nothing or little about video compression and you don't want to mess with complicated math, this is the book you should read.Video Compression Overview

Video Codec Design: Developing Image and Video Compression Systems ReviewThis book attempts to tell you everything about all the video
compression standards in less than 300 pages. Now does that
really sound possible ?
It was obviously put together this way to appeal to the widest
possible audience, and therefore dilutes its content on each
of the individual coding standards (MPEG-1,2,4 H.263, H.264)
to the point of being useless.
JPEG gets a disproportionate 5 pages, which is not video really,
and then MPEG-2 gets 3 pages and MPEG-4 1 page. Then H.261
H.263 and H.26L are grouped together and are discussed in 13
pages.
Then the book goes into Motion Estimation/Compensation, but
of course it's presented as a generic subject not specific
to any of the standards, which is okay for the pure ME part
but the various encoding modes of the individual standards
are lost (hey, isn't this a HUGE part of understanding
video compression ?).
Rate control, the brains of the video codec, is glossed over.
There is a brief intro to Rate-Distortion theory which doesn't
mention clearly that this is impractical from an implementation
standpoint, and then a brief rehash of TM5 for MPEG-2 and TM8
for H.263.
So far, the only decent book I've found on video compression
(where my interest has been MPEG-2) is "Techniques and Standards
for Image, Video and Audio Coding" by Rao and Hwang.
Then again, I haven't found a thing in any of these books that
you cannot find on the web for free that is much better.Video Codec Design: Developing Image and Video Compression Systems Overview

Digital Video and HD: Algorithms and Interfaces (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Graphics) ReviewCharles Poynton is one of the world's leading experts on TV and video technology, and he's a great writer too. Poynton demonstrates good humor and tremendous attention to detail in this book. In fact, the price of the book is both funny and technically relevant-- it's the field rate of NTSC video, 59.94 Hertz!
Poynton details dozens of video standards in this book, which builds on his previous _A Technical Introduction to Digital Video_. That book has held a place of honor in my technical library since it was published, and Poynton's latest work will sit beside it.
_Digital Video and HDTV Algorithms and Interfaces_ is an even more substantial work than its predecessor, with 736 very readable pages covering essentially the whole world of digital video. Poynton starts the book with a comprehensive review of how images are composed, displayed and perceived, and brings in the relevant elements of specific video standards as he goes.
The second and third parts of the book cover all the other fundamental technologies that make digital video possible, including filtering algorithms, color science, and video compression.
Part 4 provides a detailed explanation of the key standards used for studio video production work, both analog and video, with a whole chapter to explain standard-definition test signals. Part 5 is a complementary discussion of broadcast and consumer standards. The book also includes two appendices explaining some important issues related to digital video, and a very thorough glossary.
I've been designing and writing about computer graphics and multimedia products for many years, and this is by far the best overview of digital video that I've seen. I highly recommend this book for everyone who is professionally involved in video engineering.

DSLR Cinema: Crafting the Film Look with Video ReviewThe book seems ambitious in its scope -- HDSLR gear, camera techniques, sound, lighting, editing, software, etc. -- however the knowledgeable author, Kurt Lancaster, succeeds in providing a well-developed conceptual framework AND pragmatic specifics to help his readers to understand and achieve success with the complexities of HDSLR filmmaking.
Lancaster offers VERY specific advice about essential gear for a range of budgets. He dissects techniques used in specific examples, citing HDSLR videos for readers to watch at Vimeo and other sites.
I drank the KoolAid some time ago and do share the author's delight at how enjoyable it is to watch well-produced DLSR footage. Although I recall feeling impressed by Vicent Laforet's very clean, professional "Reverie" about two years ago:
vimeo (dot) com / 7151244
But it was the intensity and immediacy of one short piece about the 2010 Nashville flood, shot by Michael Deppisch using a handheld Canon 5D Mark II that really made a deep impression and triggered my deeper interest in learning HDSLR filmmaking:
youtube (dot) com / watch?v=vwCGz1vSh_M
To distinguish the image texture of "conventional/normal video" from "digital film", Lancaster explains in his introduction that the "film look" is a result of the overall image quality and "cinematic approach", not a particular technical spec on the camera or sensor. He also further distinguishes the look of cinema film from the "HDSLR cinema aesthetic".
I'm very new to digital filmmaking (fiction or documentary), but have worked with video for art and for marketing for over 20 years. Over the past four months, I've invested a good deal of time researching everything I could find online about shooting DSLR HD video from:
cinema5d (dot) com
vimeo (dot) com
cheesycam (dot) com
nextwavedv (dot) com
philipbloom (dot) net
blog (dot) vincentlaforet (dot) com / mygear
Lancaster links to some of those same sites from his blog at
kurtlancaster (dot) com / dslr-cinema
Lancaster continues to regularly add blog posts, which I've found helpful as I learn how to get professional sound and video from a Canon 60D.
"DSLR Cinema" covers most of the practical advice I was able to find in those several months of research, and he adds a great deal more applied knowledge which I doubt I could have ever found online, even after many more months of effort. The author seems to genuinely desire that his readers would be successful with these tools and it seems important to him to share both his delight and the wisdom gathered from his and others' experiences.
Because DSLR represents a convergence of video, film and photographic techniques, this book may not be helpful to every type of HDSLR video filmmaker (beginner to pro), but it does exactly meet my needs as I develop a list of gear to pack for my own journey into this exciting, new territory of DLSR film making.
Of course, pro DSLR photographers (like Laforet) are NOT the first to discover the landscape of cinema, much of which was settled long ago by highly-experienced filmmakers, directors, and cinematographers -- it has been over a hundred years since the Lumière brothers began to explore the realm of moving images:
youtube (dot) com / watch?v=4nj0vEO4Q6s
Lancaster works hard at being a native guide in this land and I'm grateful for his experience as I begin to learn how to shoot efficiently and effectively with these new tools.

Blu-ray Disc Demystified ReviewThis is a good book and offers a lot of information about Blu-Ray. I am planning to create some fancy blu-ray discs from my HD camcorder and I wanted to get familiar with the format.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that besides the technical info (codecs, limitations, etc), this book also includes some information on how to prepare your assets for blu-ray authoring.
Highly recommended! Probably the best book available to date. I subtracted a star because it could be better organized and it also could get more in depth about the compression codecs. It should be more like 4.5 stars....

From Still to Motion: A photographer's guide to creating video with your DSLR (Voices That Matter) ReviewListen, I'm not much for pimpage. I mean, my pimp hand is strong, but I'm not in the habit of shilling products or hawking gear. (There's enough people doing that.) But when I come across something I really think is useful...no, indispensable...well that I have to share.
If you shoot on HDSLRs, you need to buy the new book "From Still To Motion..." by Matt Gottshalk, Robbie Carman, Jim Ball and Richard Harrington. LINK At just over $30, it may be the single best shooter's resource for DSLR shooting available. Period.
(Don't get me started on how poorly-named the book is. The title makes it sound like just a photographer's guide, but it most certainly is not. It's for anyone who picks up a DSLR with the goal of shooting and putting together quality work.)
Written by working pros who deal with all aspects of production, the book takes you from start to finish, from lens selection to workflow and final output. It is the most thorough resource out there, and is valuable even if you've been shooting with DSLRs for a while, like I have.
The book is not camera-specific, so whether you're on a GH1 or a 1DMkIV there is plenty of great information here. And at the back of the book is a DVD with hours of tutorials, project files and sample videos. The DVD alone is worth the price of the book.
Buy. This. Book. Now. It's that good. And it will make your work better. I consider this book to be nothing less than the bible of HDSLR shooting. From Still to Motion: A photographer's guide to creating video with your DSLR (Voices That Matter) Overview

High Definition Cinematography, Third Edition ReviewI am a professional documentary filmmaker at the University of Pennsylvania, and because I am young and early in my career, I got this book to improve my skills in cinematography. It's not a terrible book, but I wasn't able to get anything useful out of it. It seems to be the same information I learned simply by doing a lot of research when buying my HD cameras; information I got from various websites and just by reading camera reviews. Though I suppose it does get a little deeper in the technical realm, this isn't what I thought of when I wanted to learn more about cinematography. I wanted guidance in the craft and art. This book doesn't provide that, so if you only want technical info about how HD cameras work, this is the book for you.High Definition Cinematography, Third Edition Overview

How Video Works, Second Edition: From Analog to High Definition ReviewThis is a great overview of modern video technology and achieves the authors' goal, namely "easy to understand explanations of the entire world of video."
Each chapter is pretty much self-supporting, so you don't have to read the entire book cover to cover. Having said that, the book is a fairly quick read. The copious illustrations are clear and the use of real world equipment is helpful to those that may be exposed to it.
This isn't the book to give detail about ever single aspect of a topic, but it certainly gives you enough to make use of the more specialised texts. How Video Works, Second Edition: From Analog to High Definition Overview
