Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution Review

At the very end of the book, the author quotes James Madison as carved into the marble of the Library of Congress: "...a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives." And there it is--Howard Rheingold has documented the next level of the Internet, in which kids typing 60 words a minute with one thumb, "swarms" of people converging on a geospatial node guided only by their cell phones; virtual "CIAs" coming together overnight to put together massive (and accurate) analysis with which to take down a corporate or government position that is fradulent--this is the future and it is bright.
As I go back through the book picking out highlights, a few of the following serve to capture the deep rich story being told by this book--breakthroughs coming from associations of amateurs rather than industry leaders; computer-mediated trust brokers--collective action driven by reputation; detailed minute-by-minute information about behaviors of entire populations (or any segment thereof); texting as kid privacy from adult hearing; the end of the telephone number as relevant information; the marriage of geospatial and lifestyle/preference information to guide on the street behavior; the perennial problem of "free riders" and how groups can constrain them; distributed processing versus centralized corporate lawyering; locations with virtual information; shirt labels with their transportation as well as cleaning history (and videos of the sex partners?)--this is just mind-boggling.
Finally, the author deserves major credit for putting all this techno-marvel stuff into a deep sociological and cultural context. He carefully considers the major issues of privacy, control, social responsibility, and group behavior. He ends on very positive notes, but also notes that time is running out--we have to understand where all this is going, and begin to change how we invest and how we design everything from our clothing to our cities to our governments.
This is an affirming book--the people that pay taxes can still look forward to the day when they might take back control of their government and redirect benefits away from special interests and back toward the commonwealth. Smart mobs, indeed.Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution Overview

Professional SharePoint 2007 Web Content Management Development: Building Publishing Sites with Office SharePoint Server 2007 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewWCM (Web Content Management) is becoming a "hot" item in many MOSS deployments. I should also clarify that this book is focused on WCM as opposed to ECM (Enterprise Content Management), as this seems to be a confusing topic for some. So it is mainly for those looking for working with the publishing infrastructure within MOSS (replacing MCMS - Microsoft Content Management Server), not with the Document Management features (Archiving, Records, etc...). This book is a great reference for those of us who develop against MOSS but who haven't had a chance to work with the WCM features.
I was especially pleased on the sections covering custom fields, field controls and control templates for truly customizing the authoring experience for your content authors. It is hard to find good information on extending the authoring environment and this book gave me enough info to really customize the publishing features of MOSS for my end users and content authors.
While not covering every single possible scenario, this reference provides more than adequate instruction and guidance on using the built in API's to accomplish most tasks. I do not expect a book to spoon feed me everything I need to know about a topic especially if it is to be useful as a general reference. The book does a great job of covering enough of each subject to give you a jump off point to build from on your own projects. As the title states it is in the professional line of WROX books so it expects that you have a good deal of familiarity with MOSS and .Net development. It did a great job of giving instruction without the heavy handed hand holding that some entry level or beginning books tend to lean toward. For those who are not as familiar with SharePoint or .Net I would definitely recommend looking into some introductory training or books first before jumping in. While I would welcome more coverage on some of the topics, they can always go into additional books or in AC's already extensive list of topics covered in his Blog or workshops.
I give this book 5 stars for giving me more tools as a developer to work with the WCM aspects of MOSS. All of the examples in the book so far that I have used have been fully functional despite the fact that this book was probably written prior to the release of some of the fixes that have been released for MOSS like SP1, etc...
I definitely recommend this to anyone who is a SharePoint developer looking to get into the WCM aspects of the product.

Video Compression ReviewDefinitely, an excellent introductory book on video compressionfundamentals. The book is very well written in a simple and clearway. It explains the basics of audio, image and video compression techniques, with a minimum of math. However, you won't find detailed implementation issues, and it has some mismatches in the examples and in the formulas used. If you know nothing or little about video compression and you don't want to mess with complicated math, this is the book you should read.Video Compression Overview
