Value Investing Made Easy: Benjamin Graham's Classic Investment Strategy Explained for Everyone ReviewSome reviewers criticize Lowe, claiming 1) the book is too simple, 2) she simply quotes people like Buffet, Graham and Lynch, and 3) she doesn't explain her calculations enough. I disagree on all counts! You really should take a look at this book; it's an excellent all around introduction.
1. Is the book too simple? No, it's supposed to be simple. Lowe herself explains in the title, and in the preface, that this book is meant to be ``Graham and Dodd made easy''. She did a good job; that's just what the book is. After you read this book, you should think about moving on to Graham and Dodd--but this book is a good start.
2. What's wrong with quoting successful folks like Buffet, Graham and Lynch? Remember, this book is ``Graham and Dodd made easy'', so it's bound to contain lots of references to Graham and Dodd. Naturally, it also contains quotes from Graham's most successful disciple, Warren Buffet. The quotes are well chosen, so Lowe has done us a service. She has distilled the wisdom of the master.
3. Should Lowe make recommendations, like ``use this formula; don't use that one''? I don't think so. The problem with value investing is that no one formula perfectly captures business worth. If there were a simple formula, then everyone would be a millionaire. The fact is that you need to know several different ways of looking at company value. Each way is reasonable. Your personality, viewpoint and tolerance for uncertainty decides how you weight these different variables. However you do it, you will be exactly as successful as you are careful and businesslike.
So all around, I think this book is an excellent introduction to value investing. It captures the spirit of great investors, while remaining readable and clear. Well worth your time.Value Investing Made Easy: Benjamin Graham's Classic Investment Strategy Explained for Everyone Overview

Investments (6th Edition) ReviewI've read a lot of popular books about investing. Some of them were helpful in introducing me to investing in general. I decided, however, that I wanted a more thorough knowledge of the subject. I bought "The Portable MBA in Investment" by Peter Bernstein and found it utterly incomprehensible. If I wanted to be well-grounded in investing, this was unacceptable.
I borrowed Sharpe's text from the library and have been blasting through it for the past few days. It isn't an easy text; anyone who wants to tackle the subject should have some background in math and statistics. And I would suggest that people be at least somewhat familiar with investing. Otherwise, they may be turned off completely by the stuff. Once you're ready to go, though, make sure you read Sharpe's book first.
I've sampled other texts, and Sharpe's is the clearest and most relevant. Nothing is omitted. Everything from factor models to reading stock tables is included. The book is extremely well-written. Most of the material is presented simply. For example, the formulas are illustrated with examples that make understanding infinitely easier. And each chapter has a sidebar called "Institutional Issues" which puts a real-world spin on the chapter's subject matter. An invaluable book for the serious investor.

The Leadership Challenge, 3rd Edition Review
This book has been around in various editions for almost twenty years now. One reason for that is that it is an excellent overview of leadership in organizations and how you can do it yourself.
The book's structure follows its basic recommendations. The authors recommend five fundamental practices, each of which has two commandments, for a total of ten. In general, these are both straightforward and insightful. "Challenge the Process" talks about searching for opportunities, experimenting, and taking risks. "Modeling the Way" talks about setting the example and planning small wins. There is also material on "Enabling Others to Act."
Then there are a couple of weaker sections. Sections on inspiring and encouraging simply are too fluffy and lack the support that is given to other points.
Even having said that, this is a book that's worth reading if you are responsible for leadership in an organization of any size. The reason is the way the book came together.
The authors used two different kinds of research to develop their recommendations. They looked at over five hundred leaders, but they looked at them in a particular way.
In each case, they had asked the leader to talk about his or her actions as a leader when they were doing excellent work. In other words, they looked for excellent examples of leadership and tried to draw lessons from them.
They also went to the other side and talked to followers about what they wanted in leaders. When they put those two kinds of research together, you get recommendations that are both practical and, for the most part, behavioral.
Warren Bennis' recent book, Geeks and Geezers, is an excellent companion for this book. In that book, Bennis talks about crucibles of leadership or experiences, which provide intense stress and learning of leadership that form leadership values.
On the plus side this is good, practical, behavioral and helpful if you're responsible for a group of any kind or size. On the downside, some of the language can be fuzzy and simplistic, and some of the concepts, like "Encourage the Heart" sounds just a tad too New Age for my taste.

Trading Natural Gas: Cash, Futures, Options and Swaps ReviewWas very pleased with the material contained in this book. Although I am a beginner in the natural gas trading field, I found Sturm's book both easy to understand yet challenging in its scope. A great deal of emphasis is placed upon various hedging techniques and many helpful diagrams are included to portray the trading flow. Overall a very unique and insightful book for beginners and for those with years of experience in trading natural gas.Trading Natural Gas: Cash, Futures, Options and Swaps Overview

The New Buffettology: The Proven Techniques for Investing Successfully in Changing Markets That Have Made Warren Buffett the World's Most Famous Investor ReviewThis book is an improved version of their original. Particularly better was the coverage on what makes a durable competitive advantage. Also, the formulas and approach was organized better.
By reading the negative reviews of this book and its original you will find that this is a book written to be easily read. The authors did a great job of cleaning up the the "I knew Warren" tone of the first book.
The only drawback of this book is its over-simplifying the complications that can occur when you do a value approach - particularly when you look at real data. Still, this new book gives many examples to walk the reader through the methodology.
There is no statistical results shown that this method does indeed beat the market. You have to take it on faith that this methodology is used by Buffet, that it is what produced his great success, and that it can be duplicated in today's market.
Still, this is a great book, and I recommend it to investors, and to businessmen who need to understand more about "durable competitive advantage" and the kinds of businesses they should be creating. There is much more that needs to be said about competitive advantage. There are several books on this (starting with Michael Porter). This book gives a simplified version.
I think it is important to know that Buffet is not a Jack Welch type of manager. I would say he is closer to a Harold Geneen in that he is more of a "rentier" than a get-in-the-trenches manager/leader like Welch. This effects his choice of businesses. His approach is to own the only gravel pit in the county, and milk it for many years. This is certainly a good approach, but one that is difficult to pull off because a competitive advantage is difficult to hold on to.
It appears that significant monies were made by Buffet using investments not following this method (hedging, speculating on interest rates). These have provided buffers against when the value investing techniques didn't work.
Perhaps most important in the author's and Buffet's approach is the use of stock selection criteria that are outside of the radar of the average investor. And, that criteria is the screening on "durable comepetive advantage." Few investors screen stocks on this qualitative data. If this criteria indeed selects successful companies then you will do better than those without this information (assuming you buy right).
After reading this book, you can find out more on competitive advantage and stock prices by reading the books by A. David Silver (Quantum Companies). He is one of my favorite authors on durable competitive advantage. You should also read some of the recent books on how to research companies, like the one by Hoover.
There are many books on value investing. There is even a "Dummies" book on it. All of these are recommended because you will find that there can be a lot more to it than presented in this book. I would think that some kind of value investing test should be a requirement for all CEO's. Hopefully such a focus would keep certain CEO's and their partners-in-crime (CFO's) from focusing on hyping up the stock price through fraud, and get back to producing real business results. This book does not tell you how to detect puffed up earnings and fraudulent balance sheets. You'll need to read other value investing books for this.
Overall, I believe that if you follow the simple formulas in this book, you will find good value stocks. Buy this book, rather than the other previous ones.

Hedge Funds For Dummies ReviewI hate to admit but this book is actually pretty good. Being a financial professional as well as marginally positively biased towards the hedge fund industry, the publication of this book initially caused laughter as well as sadness in the industry. The title alone is cause for laughter: Hedge Funds for Dummies. Hilarious. It is also sad: The industry becoming mainstream so fast is somewhat sad in a sense that it loses some of its exclusivity.
The target audience is not, as the title rhetorically suggests, idiots but reasonably educated and curious people (essentially people who buy books for the purpose of acquiring knowledge and insight rather than public display). The reason for this book getting five stars is the following: Most books on hedge funds are written either by academics or practitioners. The books written by academics are quite often perceived as hoax by the investment profession because the content is abstract and dogmatic, i.e., a desperate attempt to fit the hedge fund phenomena into the corset of old paradigms such as "relative return investing" and EMH and CAPM whereas it too often transpires that the authors never have come even close to visiting or experiencing the dynamics of a trading floor in the real world. Books by practitioners on the hand often lack rigor and occasionally lack a sense for understanding the other side, i.e., the investors and their needs, requirements and constraints. Hedge Fund for Dummies finds an attractive balance. A balance between explaining or highlighting the theory including where the theory breaks down or is a poor description of investment reality on one hand and having the investor in mind on the other.
In addition, we all would seriously be better off if this book were required reading for US Congress.

Contrarian Investment Strategies - The Next Generation ReviewThe key idea in this book constitutes sound common-sense advice to any investor: buy a diversified portfolio of out-of-favor stocks with sound underlying businesses (e.g., low P/E firms) and sell when the market recognizes their value. The book is controversial because it slams current academic theories on how the market works, especially the idea of "efficient markets". Dreman believes that simply because of the way our minds work, the market tends to systematically over-react or under-react to news (especially earnings reports), and this can be exploited forever (because the way our minds are wired is not going to change). Other controversial ideas: 1) don't buy index funds (because the committees which make indexes tend to put in firms which have had a price run-up and drop firms which have had a price decline, so that buying the index involves buying high and selling low); 2) don't buy NASDAQ stocks unless they have great volume (because NASDAQ market-makers are not regulated enough, and will cheat you on the spread); 3) avoid international (non-US) stocks (because international markets have performed much worse than the US stock market over time); 4) equities are a safer way to hold money than treasury bonds or gold or cash (because of inflation and taxes). The author presents fairly detailed statistical evidence to show that his methods have worked over the past several decades. This is actually evidence that even academics are beginning to notice.
That said, it should be noted that the author's Kemper-Dreman fund (ticker: KDHAX) has done pretty badly in the last few years. Also, some of the stock picks in his Forbes column have been horrible. The most glaring example would be Prison Realty (ticker: PZN), which is currently hovering on the verge of bankruptcy. Dreman recommended it because of its REIT status and its high dividend yield both of which went away shortly after.
My 2c: consider the guy's broad investment strategies with respect, but don't follow his (or anyone else's) picks without putting in your own research.Contrarian Investment Strategies - The Next Generation Overview

The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur: The tell-it-like-it-is guide to cleaning up in business, even if you are at the end of your roll. ReviewI fell in love with Toilet Paper Entrepreneur on page xxi (in the introduction) where Mike Michalowicz does a brilliant comparison between the "Media Darling" entrepreneur and his "Three Sheet Path." In Mike's example at the age of 18, the media darling is recruited to an Ivy League school only to quit and launch a successful VC. Meanwhile, Mike is picking colleges based on the guy-to-girl ratios. Yup - that would be me.
This book showed me that regular people with some skill and an idea can launch a successful business -- without all the fancy schmancy MBA stuff and spending thousands on consultants and technology. Don't get me wrong. There is a place for all the formal stuff - but this book will get you to that place.
One of my favorite Guy Kawasaki quotes (from his new book Reality Check) goes something like "Just once I wish someone would ask me for money to increase their capacity because they have more customers than they know what to do with!"
Toilet Paper Entrepreneur will get you to that point where you will build a business and an infrastructure for profitable growth. If you've ever dreamed of pitching the likes of Guy Kawasaki - read this first. This will get you to needing more capacity to serve more customers.
Mike doesn't have to impress anyone. He has proven (because he's made millions several times over) that real entrepreneurship is about resourceful action and this book tells you how.
Build your business with 3 documents
1. A Prosperity Plan - Your credo and vision for your success.
2. A Quarterly Plan - Your goals and objectives a quarter out
3. Daily Metrics - The numbers that immediately measure the health of your business.
You'll also find ways to:
- Get low-cost, no-cost employees and assistance
- Find office furniture
- Free conference calling and web casting
And so much more.
WARNING: Not for the easily offended.
If you are easily offended by potty humor - this book is not for you. If you're more impressed with high-end consultant, PhD. research-based books that tell you all the right ways to do things - you'll be disappointed.
But even the "negative reviews" here acknowledge that the information is good, valid, insightful and right on.
Personally, I love the potty humor. It's visceral and completely and effectively communicates what it really means to be resourceful when you have to be.
I've already used many of the tips in the book and saved some money. It's inspirational and is gathering quite the community of fun entrepreneurs committed to action and growth no matter what the economy.,

ForeX Trading for Maximum Profit: The Best Kept Secret Off Wall Street ReviewOkay, first some background: I am new to trading forex but have been trading stocks and options for over 5 years. Aspects of the forex market are very intriguing (24 hour trading, a small 'universe' of currencies to watch vs. thousands of stocks/options, leverage, etc.) so I was looking for a book that would tell me more about the forex market and provide a good foundation to trade successfully.
Let me state from the outset that the editing indeed leaves much to be desired. Typos, letters or spaces left out and smallish charts that forces one to bring out a magnifying glass at times. But none of this has anything to do with the value of the content of the book. Anyone dismissing this book simply due to editing are 'missing the forest for the trees,' as the saying goes. But the minor editing blunders are unfortunate and are the reason for only 4 stars instead of 5.
Content pros:
a) Very bite-sized chapters help encapsulate topics nicely. You can focus on one thing at a time to insure that you 'get it' before moving on. And everything builds upon the preceding chapters fairly smoothly, so it works.
b) True to her premise, this is NOT another missive on all the possible technical indicators available to use. (If you want that, I suggest Murphy's tome on Technical Analysis.) Instead, she is clearly outlining some of the key tools that she uses to trade forex and provides adequate reasoning for her choices. She does not dismiss other indicators as not being useful - she simply seems to have found that following a simple system with these tools works for her. And I would have to agree that it is easy to become bogged down in 'indicator paralysis' and I find her simplicity refreshing.
c) For those commentators below that question whether she is a 'real' trader or whether her system can work, I would happily point out that the forex market uniquely offers a wonderful, NO COST way to find out for yourself! Unlike any stock broker that I know, you can open a demo account (or 3 or 5!) with any online forex broker and 1) learn how to execute a trade (it is different than stocks or options in some ways), 2) see whose `trading platform' you like the most AND, most importantly, 3) you can 'play along with Raghee' (or anyone else's strategy) as you read the book!
d) She does a very good job of defining trading styles (scalping, swing, momentum, etc.), links them to what markets that best apply (trending, sideways, etc.) and to which indicators fit each style and market the best. I have not seen any other author put the style, market conditions and tools together in such a clear manner.
e) She does a very commendable job in covering trade and account management. With the high leverage issues in forex, these issues become very critical, more so than with stocks and options. This is typically a boring area for most readers, but ignore it at your financial peril!
Content cons:
a) Other than the known gripes about small charts and some editing gaffs, I really do not have any significant `cons.' (But ask me again in a year once I have traded in a 'real' account for a while! The demo account is doing too well to leave unfunded!)
As you can tell, I highly recommend this book. If you are new to forex, you can buy many books for half the cost of this one, some that are a lot thicker, too! But I doubt that you can find a better book to help you become comfortable with the market, the 'whys' and 'hows' of trading forex, and perhaps most importantly, how to manage your trades and money in differing market conditions.
1. Buy this book.
2. Open a demo account (if you are not already active in forex)
3. 'Play' until you are ready!
What could be better?

Wall Street Lingo: Thousands of Investment Terms Explained Simply ReviewI found the title of this book deceiving in the best way possible. Wall Street Lingo is more a guided tour of Wall Street and its inner workings than a simple glossary of investment terms and lingo. Any novice to intermediate investor will benefit from Peterson's backstage pass to one of the world's most lucrative investment forums.
Peterson keeps an otherwise dry and heavy read manageable with her extremely user-friendly format; on top of dividing the over 1000 defined investment terms into logical chapters, a full index at the back of the book makes for quick referencing. At first glance, the sheer number of topics covered seems intimidating to the financially untrained eye. However, the step-by-step approach demystifies every aspect of investment, from the basics of exchange operations to interpreting financial statements to paying the tax man. Charts, tables and explanations of key strategies interspersed throughout the definitions in each chapter help to drive home important points. Those in need of extra investment help will find plenty of additional resources tucked into the back of the book, with lists of acronym definitions, investor resources and relevant publications.
Wall Street Lingo delivered all that it promised and more. The up to date instruction and information is sure to benefit any potential or practicing investor wise enough to develop their investment knowledge before hitting the market. The way the information is presented is the icing on the cake, as even a beginner can navigate the guide and come out confident in their financial prowess in the end.

A Maniac Commodity Trader's Guide To Making A Fortune: A Not-So-Crazy Roadmap to Riches (Agora Series) ReviewI see Kevin on TV all the time, and I've read a lot of his stuff, so I was very excited to get my hands on this book. To be honest, it wasn't what I was expecting. But that's actually a good thing.
Instead of the trip into Kevin's head I was hoping for, this is more of a beginner's guide to commodities. Kevin patiently explains the basics, using examples and recalling actual situations to bring the text to life. And it's all presented in the "down home" style that makes him seem like the genuine article.

But aside from some tantalizing looks into Kevin's career, this isn't a book for his diehard fans. It's designed for a wide audience -- people who want to start trading commodities but don't know where to start. Given the knowledge Kevin shares, I think he could easily earn many new fans. And now that he's gotten the basics out of the way (and assuming this book does well), I expect a follow-up book with some really meaty tips for us commodity vets.

Hedge Fund Operational Due Diligence: Understanding the Risks (Wiley Finance) ReviewGood solid book. The author began this book by essentially stating that this is a subject that has been ignored for way too long. After reading this very instructive work I couldn't agree more - operational due diligence is a very important part of hedge fund investing, and this book was a great guide. I liked this book for several reasons, the biggest one being that it does not merely describe just a checklist or outline a due diligence questionnaire for hedge funds due diligence. The operational due diligence techniques described seemed to be practical and actually something people could implement. I also liked the historical perspective gave me a good context for everything I was reading too. I enjoyed the examples too. A lot of interesting points and was thought provoking for me.Hedge Fund Operational Due Diligence: Understanding the Risks (Wiley Finance) Overview
